In the pursuit of spiritual growth and service to God, believers are called to discipline and dedication, much like athletes train for competition. The apostle Paul encourages Timothy to view himself as an athlete, striving for excellence and adhering to the rules, as noted in 2 Timothy 2:5. Similarly, in 2 Timothy 4:7, Paul reflects on his own life as a diligent athlete who has finished the race. The prophet Isaiah offers a powerful promise of strength and renewal to those who wait on God, as described in Isaiah 40:29-31, while 1 Timothy 4:7 and Psalms 62:2 provide guidance on training and trust in God's power.

Likewise, a competitor does not receive the crown unless he competes according to the rules.
He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to take the prize.
But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good, traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. Turn away from such as these! They are the kind who worm their way into households and captivate vulnerable women who are weighed down with sins and led astray by various passions, who are always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth. They are depraved in mind and disqualified from the faith. But they will not advance much further. For just like Jannes and Jambres, their folly will be plain to everyone.
Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession before many witnesses.
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
