Ornan

Ornan, also known as Araunah, is a figure mentioned in the Bible, particularly in 1 Chronicles 21:18-30. He was a Jebusite who owned a threshing floor on Mount Moriah, which became significant in the biblical narrative as the site where King David decided to build an altar to the Lord. The context of Ornan's mention is tied to David's census of Israel, which led to a divine judgment resulting in a plague. God commanded David to build an altar at Ornan's threshing floor to stop the plague. The name "Ornan" itself is thought to mean "light" or "enlightened," reflecting perhaps a certain spiritual significance associated with the location of his threshing floor. In the account, when David approached him to buy the threshing floor for the altar, Ornan offered to give it freely, demonstrating his reverence and willingness to serve God. However, David insisted on paying for it, stating, "I will not take for the Lord what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing" (1 Chronicles 21:24). This highlights themes of sacrifice and the importance of giving to God that which is meaningful and costly. Ultimately, this location later became the site of Solomon's Temple, further solidifying its significance in biblical history.
