Mockery

1 sermons

Mockery in the Bible often refers to ridicule, contempt, or scorn directed at individuals or groups, particularly those who are perceived as foolish or lacking wisdom. It is frequently associated with a rejection of divine wisdom and instruction. For instance, Proverbs 1:22 states, "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?" Here, "scoffers" are depicted as those who mock wisdom and thereby position themselves in opposition to God’s guidance. In a broader biblical context, mockery is not only a social behavior but also a spiritual condition. Psalms 1:1 warns against walking in the counsel of the wicked or standing in the way of sinners, emphasizing the importance of avoiding the company of those who mock righteousness. In the New Testament, mockery is vividly illustrated in the Passion narratives, where Jesus is mocked by soldiers (Matthew 27:29-31) and by onlookers during His crucifixion (Matthew 27:39-40). This act of mockery not only highlights the scorn of humanity towards divine authority but also underscores the suffering of Christ, who endured ridicule as part of His redemptive mission. Thus, mockery in the Bible serves as a caution against pride and a reminder of the consequences of deriding God’s wisdom and truth.
