Coveting

4 sermons

In the biblical context, coveting refers to the intense desire or longing for something that belongs to someone else, often driven by a sense of lack or dissatisfaction with one's own circumstances. The tenth commandment, as stated in Exodus 20:17 and reiterated in Deuteronomy 5:21, explicitly prohibits coveting, emphasizing the importance of being content with what one has and trusting in God's provision. As the apostle Paul notes in 1 Timothy 6:10, the love of money and material possessions can lead to all sorts of evil, highlighting the dangers of coveting and the need for Christians to cultivate a spirit of gratitude and contentment, as encouraged in Philippians 4:11. By recognizing the destructive nature of coveting, Christians can instead focus on cultivating a heart of thankfulness and trust in God's goodness, as expressed in Psalms 100:5.
