Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Matthew, chapter 13. From the verse 44. He is a hidden seal, hidden among heaven, a like-hearted sire, hidden seal. Hidden sire. Question meant about, somehow in that place he found that hidden sire. He bought that field for the higher state. And it was so precious that he stole all that he had. Similarly he said here in verse forty-five, the kingdom of heaven, like untreated merchantmen, seeking good people. When he had found one pound of wheat price, went and stole all that he had. And he parted. So both these parables speak of the same thing. A treasure very precious and the pearl of gift price. So precious, the person who bought it, that he stole all that he had to buy it. Sometimes in many hymns they call Lord Jesus Christ a pearl of gift price. But going by the details, Lord Jesus Christ cannot be a pearl of gift price. It is someone going about to buy something, to possess something. Who had so much, they prepared to steal all that he had to buy it. We as sinners have nothing to give to buy anything. See we are compared as sinners in the Bible to a silty rag of no value. Because he was here in verse sixty-four and verse sixty-six. But we all are as unclean thing. All our uncleanness are silty rag. We all do fate as a leaf. Our niceties, like the wind, have flown away. We are compared to a silty rag, an unclean thing, which has no use and no value. It is just thrown away. Here we see in chapter fourteen, we are compared to a dry leaf or a scattered flower. Book of Isaiah, chapter fourteen and verse five and six. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, all flesh shall be cleansed. The mouth of the Lord has opened it. The vassal cried. And he said, what shall I cry? All flesh in the grass, all the goody in the grass, the grass is there, the flower is there. The glory of the Lord will be upon it, surely the people of the grass. All flesh is grass. Here we compare all human beings to a dry grass or to a scattered flower. The grass is there, the flower is there. Surely such a man cannot be compared to buy anything. But that man went about, he had something, whatever he had, he gave it, he sold it and he bought it. To possess that field or to buy that pearl, because it is in his private possession. He is the Lord Jesus Christ who has something to give and buy us. Only he is the person who gave all what he had to seek and to save sinners. He offered whole body to be broken and whole blood to be emptied to seek and save sinners. He will hold back anything. As Paul testified in Galatians 2.20, Son of God will I would be and gave himself for me. Similarly, chapter 1 verse 4, Lord Jesus Christ who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from the pleasant ill world on the will of God and of Father. He gave all what he had and he gave it willingly. He offered whole body willingly. That is John chapter 10 verse 15. No man take it from me, but I lay down on myself. I have power to lay down and I have power to give him. Then Mark 10 chapter 34, and they shall mock him and shall scourge him and shall spit upon him and shall kill him. And on third day he shall arise again. So it is he who gave all what he had. He left his heavenly throne and he took upon himself the form of a flesh. He became limited. And he emptied himself. And he came in a body of manger. Completely gave what he had. All his glory. And he offered whole hands and feet with tears. Back to be scourged, face to be spat upon. And hair to be plucked. And there cannot be said about any other man. Nobody ever gave so much as he gave. Last he left the heavenly throne full of glory, he became empty completely. And he became humble. And then what we can say is that these parables speak of Lord Jesus Christ going about in search of father treasure and the pearl. But the mystery is how in his sight we can become so precious unto him. Even though we have become so ruined by sin, completely like a filthy unclean thing and a cast out rag. His sight we are very precious. And we know what he can make of us in future in eternity. Unless people are going about in search for something, they have got some idea before them. See for example there are some person going in search for herbs on the mountain. There are some herbs and the leaves of those herbs, bushes, which have got some property for the healing. Some of these leaves contain the curing property for the eye diseases, some for the heart diseases, some for the brain diseases. Some for skin trouble. And even though other people may go about for them, they would hardly leave. They won't bother to pick them up and waste their time in looking at them. Because they have no attraction, no beauty and no value in their sight. But who knows something about the leaves, they can pick them up, dry them and powder them and use them. But there are some leaves which have the property even to set the broken bones. There are some bone setters who are able to set the broken bone with the help of the leaves only. I have known of those persons, even though the best surgeon could not set those bones for them. They consulted a good doctor, but they could not do so. But some of the poor people, if you leave, they got them cured. My father, many years ago, he broke his arm by falling from the horse. I still remember how they brought him to a shrink doctor, who could not set the bone right. But one day, when the poor shepherd came, with a few leaves and some sheep's milk. And within a few days, he got the bone right. And now we don't think we have lost some idea on those things. In their sight, those leaves are of great value. They know how they can use them to relieve pain and suffering. In the same way, there are herbs which can even take away many eye diseases. Now here we find how that man who is going about, he found a treasure, whom he can use it for eternity. But he knows how much he can change us, transform us and make us fully useful to himself for eternity. His eyes can see everything. See for example, Matthai Swartha 17, 24. And when they would come to Capernaum, they would have the steel tribute money. And somebody came to Peter and said, does not your master pay tribute? He said, yes. And when he was come to the house, he asked Peter, he is saying, what figure thou, Simon? Of whom do the kings pay customary tribute? Are they only children or of treasures? Peter said that to him, of treasures. He said that to him, are the children free? Now we are standing next to them, go down to the sea, grab the hook, take out the fish that first comes up, and thou hast opened the mouth, thou shall find a piece of money. Not with all children, any sickness or pain. But children want to give the impression that it got some serious. The way it cries and weeps to mother, they may feel, like somebody is serious. But only a deception. So we are born with a deceiving nature. Then the children start deceiving their mother, they want biscuit or some cake. I don't anybody here has ever seen the mother that way. But they have shown something. Either a cake or a biscuit or something from the kitchen side. He will be, maybe he will come to our kitchen sometime, take away a shoe and a coffee. Big, big baby. They come to our kitchen. They make sure nobody is watching. They come to door, come to door, that door they make sure. Then they think what they want, you know something is there. That is our nature. We are born with a nature of deception. God is so great, there is so much people. Knowing our nature of corruption and deception and defilement, he comes to us and does to us acceptance. And does give us a new nature. A divine nature. By that divine nature, he can bring it to us a trial. He is second Peter, and chapter one, and verse four. Second Peter, chapter one, verse four. Whereby he has given unto us exceeding great and astounding promises, that by these we might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world to us. He knows how the divine nature is coming into us, will make us more useful to him, and more fruitful on the planet earth. That is why you see, he goes on calling anybody who comes unto him, he knows by the same power, he can make argument to him. Going by his judgment, all of us have become like a filthy rag. Every human being, every sinful God is sinner. All have sinned with no exception. That is why we as human beings, whosoever we are, are only fit to be compared to a filthy, dirty rag and unclean rag. Because going by our ordinary condition, God cannot make us any of us. But he had to transform us to make us his security area. You find this diamond. A diamond is transformed to charcoal. If you keep a charcoal under some pressure for a long time, in much heat, it can be transformed into a very precious diamond. By pressure and by heat. You analyze this composition by chemistry, it is only a carbon. And yet the same thing can become very precious diamond. Now you find how every one of us can become unto God a peculiar treasure and a pearl gift prize. The pearl also is produced by suffering and pain. In the sea. And some sea grain, grain of sand enters. It gives pain. And for a leaf you find there some coming out, some fruit comes out. And the fluid becoming solid becomes pearl. Then you find the silk also comes like a pain. Silk, when in pain, does produce the silk. So God, Lord is our creator. He wants to have pearl of great price. He wants to use that pearl in his own heavenly building. That is why he is going about seeking to save sinners. They may become a part of the heavenly house. When we first come to him, we are full of foolishness and all kind of ignorance. And Chapter 1, Bhagavad-gita. Pramlila, 27. God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. God has chosen these things of the world to confound things which are magic. And there are things of the world, things which are not. You can despise. Has God chosen here things which are not? We do not think that are. So has he gone the method for the saintly? He has been seeking and saving these foolish vessels and through them confounding wise and mighty men. Now we think sometimes, some men who are very wise and great, they can become useful to God. But going by the history, we find out, God has chosen everywhere foolish vessels, wicked vessels. Weak vessels, despised vessels, rejected vessels to confound the mighty and get back. As we have seen, having too many vessels, which were despised, hated and rejected, now they become God's hand instruments to work out his purpose. You know example in God's word? In 1st Samuel and Chapter 30. 1st Samuel and Chapter 30. 1st Samuel and Chapter 30. 1st Samuel and Chapter 30. 1st Samuel and Chapter 30. Now we see in the beginning of Chapter how David and Mennon get solved. They loved so much, they had no more power left to weep. David and the people, they were with him, lifted up their voices and wept until they had no more power to weep. They loved so great. Their women and children, all were taken captive by the Amalekites. Now they are in sorrow. They don't know how to recover what they have lost. Now having heard the voice of God, they began to pursue the Amalekites. And on the way, they see this man almost dying. Timbuktu said, now he is no good. Timbuktu was Egyptian and he left him there. They lied there in the field for 3 days and 3 nights. Almost dying, no strength. In the eyes of Egyptian, that man had no value. Just as you threw a dirty paper, they threw him in the field. And they would make any improvement for his food or for his comfort, panic on him. They had left him there. He was in their sight of no use. He was of no condition. We are lying in a field of no use to anybody. There is our true inward human condition. We have no real use to God. Now David and the men saw that man appealed. And they felt sorry for him. They gave him some water to drink, some razor, some thing. And he was revived. With his help, they found a camping place, Amalekites. And because they came upon him so suddenly, they recovered all. They recovered all what they lost. Now they see much more than they lost. The man now to them very precious. But Egyptians have no use. Anybody passing by, no use. Who will bother about a dying man? So weak and so useless. And yet he was a means of a great recovery for all the men of David. Before that they were crying loudly. They didn't know to whom to go to and what to do. So that man became a useful vessel. And that's why you see, God is seeking us. Even though we have become absolutely useless to our fellow men, in God's hand we can be eternally useful. And we can become unto Him a peculiar sire and a pearl of good price. God has given all what He has. He gave all what He has. That's why unto Him we are so precious. Only when you go to heaven, then you know exactly how much precious we are to Him. You may be God, but again and again, unto God we are very precious. Who congratulates Antiochus XIX. And verse 5. Now therefore he will obey my watch indeed and keep my covenant, then he shall be a peculiar sire unto me. Of all people, all this is mine. The peculiar sire above all people. God is a peculiar sire unto me. In the eyes of God. Even though we are fellow men, we may remain foolish and stupid and not much useful. But once we repent of our sins and confess them and feel sorry for them and get them forgiven by Lord Jesus Christ And believing that He died in our state for our state. And shed His blood to cleanse us. And rose again to live with us. That kind of faith, it goes on working in us. And because of working in us, we are fully transformed and become in His sight a wonderful creation. The mystery is that we will be unto God more useful than the angels. Because God's manifold wisdom, it cannot be revealed to the angels. It is going to be revealed to those who are now being sought by Him. That is the significance of this chapter. And verse 10. Now unto the prosperities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God. God manifold wisdom. It cannot be revealed by angels. It has to be revealed by those who are now being sought by Lord Jesus Christ and are being transformed by Him. Now when you see a thing in the beginning, you don't know its usefulness. When you first discover the oil, that time you never knew what it contained and how useful it was. Because it is full of all kind of dirt. Then at a very high temperature, they began to refine it. At a very high temperature. And it becomes vapor. Then they found out that filthy, dirty stuff contained something very useful. Then they discovered petrol and other projects of the same kind. But before that they never knew anything about it. But they first found only very filthy, dirty water. So only by first when you know something about it, you discover its real value. They want to learn like it doesn't. When you go to Arabia and go to this Gulf area, for miles and miles you see nothing but sand. No bush, no tree, nothing behind, no wood. It's like a war-torn habitation. Anybody would not bother to go and even stay there for one hour even. So dirty place. But only seven years ago, they found out that it was the same petroleum oil. Now you find many wonderful cities like that. Many wonderful buildings have come up in the past 13 years only. People were riding on donkeys before. Now they are flying in their planes. In short time they become so wealthy. Now what is transformation? That desert place, as we know you, anybody, becomes so wealthy in the whole area. See, we are like a desert only. That's why in God's word we are compared to a howling wilderness. In God's word, we are so barren. Yet by God's power, we can be wonderfully transformed. God wants us to be used by Him so that He will have us also. That's why it is coming a new creation, coming a new kingdom. It will have to be governed by angels. Even 2nd chapter, Amos 5. For an angel having not put his objection on the world to come, need obviously. But certain people justified saying, what is man? They were mindful of him. A certain man, love interest him. This world which you see now will pass away. How is there a wonderful building? Look to you. One day it must pass away. There will be a new creation to show forth God's full glory. May not be governed by angels. You know what is the mystery? They are mighty angels. And we saw in the morning. In Psalm 103, verse 20. The angels do excel in strength. Mighty angels. And there are countless numbers. Revelation 5, verse 11. There are so many. Thousands and thousands and thousands. Full of brightness and glory. Luke 24, verse 4. And yet we are told, the coming new creation will not be governed by the angels. Even though they are mighty angels, many angels, and full of obedience. And they are full of glory. Whenever they appear, they appear in shining garments. And they are constantly obeying God's commandment. Yes, it says here, that the coming new creation will not be governed by angels. And the angels are happy to put an objection on the world to come. We people who are now redeemed by our Lord Jesus Christ, have the privilege to govern that inner kingdom. Filthy and dirty rags can become governors in heavenly kingdoms. Because of the transforming power of precious blood. In ourselves we are nothing. But when we claim it to us, the precious blood for cleansing by faith. The blood has the power to keep us so clean and transform us fully. And we become God and governors in the coming new creation. And that is why now God is seeking us. To make us His kings and workers and governors in the coming new creation. But devil would not like to leave his kingdom and join his kingdom. To keep us in bondage. That is how he rejected his father's law, that to keep in bondage by many of us. And for a short time he was deceived. Even though he became prosperous, but he never became really happy. This is book of Genesis and chapter 31. First of all read chapter 30. Genesis and chapter 30 and verse 25. It came to pass that Jacob went to Laban and said, send me away. And I will go out to my own place and to my country. God had told Jacob beforehand that He will bring him back to Bethel as he was fleeing away from Israel's brother. The land where But only by becoming the strier of God, we enjoy His peace and presence throughout eternity. Because to make us His strier, and the pearl gives prize, He showed all what He has. And He will pay such a high price to Persiadasa and Vimasa, then surely He will be very, very careful in keeping all of you up to us. As soon as you are in your possession, something of much value, you won't throw it here and there. You will keep it in the most safe place and look after it very, very carefully. I have seen some people, when they are travelling by train, they are afraid to lose their chappal. It is very common in the train, and they keep their chappal on the pillow. It is only worth only one rupee at the most, very old chappal. But if you look after it, they are so careful. They are prepared to lose their comfort of sleep for chappal sake. Another thing, which is of much value, they have kept a lock and key. See, the many, many people, they have not only one, but four or five locks. To be sure they are kept safe. If the Lord Jesus Christ, we are the strier of much value. He showed all what He has. All what He has. He is the one who made all the heaven and the earth. And He gave all what He had. Heavenly kingdom. Heavenly glory. Heavenly power. He gave all what He had. To possess us and to make us His strier. Because He wants to use us later on to show the wisdom to angels. And He has to look after us and keep it upon us. So He made every provision to keep us safe and well protected from the enemy attacks. And He knows how to make us perfect in sight and blameless. And that is why the Lord is now seeking you. To make you a pearl of great price. And to make you a treasure. You may pass any degree. You will never become so precious. Whatever you may acquire and learn and possess, won't give you real happiness. But becoming the pearl of great price, you show forth God's glory throughout eternity. As a bright shining pearl in heaven being admired by the angels. Only wealthy people can appreciate the value of the pearl. Only wealthy people go in the shop of the pearl to appreciate and buy it. Others won't go. The only angels can appreciate the original beauty of the pearl. The angels not just are showing the pearl to all the angels. They admire it. Lord, where did you find that pearl? It is so shining, so bright, so wonderful. So never seen like this before. We never see such a beautiful object in any part of heaven. The angels are going to admire the beauty of the wonderful pearl when you go to heaven. Finally, give your life unto Him. That is why the Lord is calling you. He knows clearly how we have been thoroughly ruined by sin. We have become like a filthy, dirty rag, nothing else. Now the pearl has become His pearl. And it gave treasure. Useful to Him to show His glory and manifold wisdom and all the heavenly power. And He will do it for eternity. We will be useful unto God throughout eternity. We come unto Him. Don't live anymore in your old sinful condition as a filthy, dirty rag. We cannot become His pearl till we ask Him for it. Just as He willingly gave His life, we also willingly give our life to Him. His love is so wonderful. He won't possess us by force. There is no real force to throw out. I have to say to Him, Lord, now you receive me. I come in my filthy, dirty condition. You accept me and forgive me and wash me and cleanse me by Thy blood. And make me Thy pearl of great price. Show forth Thy glorious beauty so eternally. And that's why He invites you. To His word and to His servant. Here is a call. Come unto Him. Now shall we pray. Our loving Heavenly Father, In the name of Lord Jesus, our loving Savior, thank Thee once again for Thy living word. We thank Thee for Thy unchanging love being offered unto all of us. Even though we have been ruined by sin and completely defiled by sin, and become like an unclean thing in a filthy land, like a faded leaf in a dry flower, in Thy hand we can become the pearl of great price. And that's true treasure. The treasure far above the price of the whole world. It can be for salvation. For which the Lord gave all what He had to purchase us by His own blood. He may find in us that pearl of great price. And we pray many among us may allow Him to possess Him. Many among us may become Thy pearl. Thy treasure. Enjoy Thy love and fraternity. God of Thy word. We pray in the name of Savior. Now will you call your main prayer for a few moments. God is speaking to you. He shows your condition. So far you haven't found true peace. Haven't got the assurance that your sins are forgiven. Haven't yet washed the Lord Jesus Christ by His precious blood. The divine nature has not yet come into you. You may be prosperous in the worldly sense. So far haven't found true peace. Do you want God to give you that peace? Do you want Him to forgive your sins? Do you want Him to be committed to your treasure? And that pearl of great price. Then call each other for prayer. We have got some printed card for further help. For help you to further experience. As you obey Him, He will transform you to make His pearl. You want that experience? Then keep at it. Anybody else? Anybody else please. Then we will get mystery. Because of which any one of us. How so ever rude we may be by sin. We can become rightful. Thank Him for the epic His precious blood. To cleanse us thoroughly. And make us rightful your treasure for eternity. Manifold for the heavenly plan. By which we can shoot for thy wisdom. Manifold wisdom. Out of power and spread heavenly preciousness. Thank Him for thy heavenly plan. To make us thy kings in thy everlasting kingdom. Always show your hand. Be given that privilege. Know this mystery. Enjoy this salvation. Your prayer is still worth it for them. My love be sure abroad. But the Holy Ghost in the heart. God love thy precious blood be sprinkled upon them. All their guiltiness can be washed away. And love may shine within them. In life, Lord many such things as again be poured in them. And go on working until they are fully transformed. And many more will find true joy and peace to the Lord. Through their changed lives. Support thy word. We pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Savior. Now on Him able to keep us falling. And present us upon the presence of glory. Receiving joy. To the only by our Savior. Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.
