Sermon Transcription
We have been going through the life of Moses. Moses, the servant of God, and last week, by the providence of God, we hit on a passage that deals with the married life of Moses. And there's not a lot that says, or the Bible doesn't say a lot about the married life of Moses. Matter of fact, it says very little. And one of the first things we get into about his married life was his problems at home. He had a problem, and we read last week about that, and maybe I'll just give you a little background on that real quick this morning. And that's this. After God met Moses on the mount, the burning bush, Moses went back home, got his wife, his children. At that time, it looks like maybe just one son. And they packed up and they headed out, and on the way there, the Bible tells us that God sought to destroy Moses. God sought to destroy him because Moses had not fulfilled the covenant promise, the covenant deal that he had made with Abraham. Moses had failed his part, and that was the outward rite of circumcision of the male child on the eighth day. That was the sign that they were God's chosen people. And God had told Abraham to pass that along to everyone of the children of Israel. Well, Moses had not fulfilled that covenant sign, and on the way, God sought to destroy him because he had not done that. And the reason that he did not do it was because his wife was not submissive to him. She did not want to do that. She thought it was just a bloody riot. And we've found out since then that medically that is a good thing to do, medically speaking. But she was rebellious. Moses had been slack in doing that which God wanted, and so he had been wrong, and his wife Zipporah had been wrong in not submitting. And so she actually does this. Moses was probably sick, so sick that he couldn't even do it, and she does it. And then she calls him a bloody husband. She said, Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at his feet and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me. So God let him go. God let Moses go. Let him live. And then she said, A bloody husband thou art because of the circumcision. And from later scriptures we know that Moses sent her home at that point. And he went about his task, the greatest task that probably any human man ever had to do outside of the Lord Jesus Christ. He had to go on and perform that task and go along, to go into Pharaoh's court and to rescue the children of Israel. He didn't have his wife supporting him because she was rebellious. Now, the subject that we're going to talk about today is the woman. Last week we talked about the man's role in marriage, and we looked at that in Ephesians, and today I promised you that we would take it from the woman's standpoint. Man is to love his wife with a sacrificial love, and the woman is to submit with a sacrificial service. And there's a lot of confusion today on marriage. A lot of people don't understand that, so we thought this would be a good time to take it. So the subject is the wife-mother role in marriage that we're going to cover today. Now let's bow for a word of prayer, and ask that God would teach us as we get into this. Father, would you take the time that we have, would you make it very understandable, Holy Spirit, would you reveal to us the importance of this subject. So many of our marriages in our country are falling apart because we're not pattering our lives according to your word. Just as so many of us in this country will die and go to hell because we do not do what you say that we should do in order to be saved, and that is simply to repent of our sins and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior. And I pray if there's one here today that has not done that, that the Spirit of God would show them how important that decision is. For it's in Jesus' name that we pray. Amen. Now, one of the most beautiful statements on submission that I've ever read in the Bible is recorded of the mother of Jesus. Remember when the angel came and told her that she was going to have by a virgin birth the Messiah. You remember what she said? In Luke 1.38, she said, Be it unto me according to thy word. That, to me, would be a good motto for a mother. You have it your way in my life, Lord. You do in my life in regard to my husband, my children, what you want. And if I can give you a statement on submission, which is the subject that we're covering today, the wife's role in marriage, the mother-wife role in the area of submission. Here's a good statement on submission. Submission is letting God do in my life whatever he wants. Submission in my marriage is letting God do in my life whatever he wants through my mate. For the wife, through her husband, and for the husband, to let God work through his wife too. Now, there's a point in being submission. There's a very important point that we're going to be going after this morning. And to get that point across, I want to share with you four things about submission. First of all, before we get into it, it's not understood. So many men have thought that when they get married, they've got a slave now. That's not what God has set us to be. Just because he's married and he is the head, as Scripture says, she is not the slave. That is not what Scripture teaches. And I want to just point out what Scripture says. First of all, then we'll cover the matter of submission. Then the manner of it. How do we submit? How does the mother-wife submit? The motive. Why do we submit? The model. Who do we pattern our submissive lifestyle after? First of all is the matter of submission. I want you to turn, if you have your Bibles, to Ephesians chapter 5. That's where we were last week. And we told the ladies that if we got done with the men, that we would take time with them. So the men last week and the women today. And it worked out just good for Mother's Day. Because we're going to cover really... You may not be a mother. You may be... You may not be there yet. Or you may never get there. If you're a father. Or a man. But you may learn some things that you can share with a mother. A young mother, a mother-to-be, or a young couple. You may learn some things that you can share with them that will save their marriage. That will help them to get off on the right track. The statistics are just out of sight now for the success chances of a marriage in America. And many of us do not understand that our marriages are being broken apart systematically by Satan. He has a plan. And he has a plan. And you may not know it, but socialism... The socialistic move in our country is designed to destroy the home too. And to destroy the lifestyle that we have. And so you need to know what this says. And that's why we're doing it. Ephesians 5, verse 17. I want to give you the matter of submission. Verse 17 says that you need to know what the will of God is for your life. Verse 17 says this. Ephesians 5, verse 17. Wherefore, be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. Do you know what the will of the Lord is for your life? As a mother, as a wife, even as for a father, a young man. There's three things here I want you to notice. In verse 17 he says, do you know what the will of God is for your life? Here's the first thing. Verse 18, be filled with the Spirit. Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit. That's God's will for your life. Is to be controlled by His Spirit. Adam and Eve were controlled by the Spirit of God in the garden before they sinned. And they had perfect harmony in their marriage. We looked at some of those things last week. We went back to Genesis. But that's the way God intended the marriage to be. The man and the woman both controlled by His Spirit. They had perfect peace, harmony, joy. It was beautiful. But as soon as sin entered in, then the Spirit was broken. And fellowship was broken. Three results of being Spirit filled. Do you know what they are? In verse 19, you'll be speaking, singing, making melody in your heart to the Lord. In other words, out of your mouth, out of your heart will come a song. So many that we live around in our day, out of their life comes sadness. And that's the way it is. If we're not filled with God's Spirit, there's no song in our life. There's nothing but sadness. And then in verse 20, giving thanks. That's the second product. Giving thanks. You will have a thankful heart. You'll have a thankful lifestyle if you're filled with the Spirit. So much, as we covered in Sunday School this morning, is just greed. And we get ourselves into trouble by our greed. We're not grateful. We're not content with what we have. We're not thankful. And then the third thing in verse 21 was submission. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. The man and the woman both submit themselves, if you notice, to one another in the fear of God. That's the first thing in marriage. Now, last week we looked at the man and now the woman. In verse 22, he goes into the woman. Why? Submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. If someone says, maybe you're a wife, or maybe somewhere down the road you'll have a chance to hear this, you have to submit. That's what the Bible says. The woman has to submit. If you'll remember this, you may be able to put some crinkle in their paper. You may be able to wrinkle up their whole act. Because what this means, basically this passage has two ideas. One, it's talking about single devotedness. And two, is possessiveness. The single devotedness is this. Wives, submit yourselves unto, that's devotedness, unto what? The thing that you possess, your own husband. You submit yourself unto your own husband. You want to do that. There's no hint now of an inferior position. As a matter of fact, it is an equal position. The problem comes in that because God says that man is the head, so many have taken it that man is to dominate the woman in a dictator type ship role. That's not what it's talking about. The woman submits to the husband because she possesses him. That's her, she commits herself to her husband. And she wants to. Because the husband, as we covered last week, will be living his life in a sacrificial way for his wife. Now, let me illustrate this in a very crude way. When we send up a space shuttle, when the space shuttle goes up, there's a crew on board. And in that crew, there is a captain. The captain is in control, right? What he says is what goes. He is the captain. If there's any ultimate decision, he makes it. Does that mean that he is superior to those under his command? In no way. And that's why the crew can go up as a team. Because he is just in control, in charge, but he is not superior. And that is the exact same way that a marriage relationship is. The man is in control, but he is not superior. They are equal. They're both created in the sight of God. Now, that's been a false concept that's been put out. That man is superior to the woman, she's inferior. That's not true. That is Satan. Now, there's another verse over in Colossians 3.18 that talks about this. It throws in an extra little thing on this. And that's this. It says, why submit yourself unto your own husbands as is fit in the Lord. The word fit is a word that's used in the Hebrew in the Septuagint. Of a legal binding thing. And what it's talking about is this is the accepted law of human society. That the woman submits herself to her husband. And that the husband loves his wife. Now, what we're seeing is a breaking down. Actually, in the Garden of Eden was the first attack to break that legal binding of society for all mankind. Eve did it. And then when Zippor rebelled against Moses, she was trying to break that legal binding. She was not submitting. And we get our problems. And that's prompted. Satan prompted Eve. I believe he probably did it with Zippor to break the bond of submission. And to break up the marriage. Now, whenever a woman fails to submit. Failure to submit. That is read by God as rebellion to him. And I'll get into that a little bit with you why it is. You know, our society is being fed so much stuff on marriage that is from hell. And this is why we're getting marriages that are actually living hell. Between couples. I mean, it's warfare. And I've been in some of them where you have to have a hard hat on to go in to the house. You might get hit by something. Out on the outside it may look good. And that's because society is telling our youth, our country, how to have your marriage. We have psychologists that if you go to them, they will actually promote the breaking up of your marriage. You go to them for help. I know of at least two factors recently where that is the case. The marriage could probably have been salvaged. But the psychologist is going on a different viewpoint from the Word of God. And so our home society is being broken apart. Moses' family was broken apart. Because somebody had fed his wife some information that didn't come from God. God designed a woman, as a wife, to serve Him by serving her husband. Do you realize that? This is what this passage is teaching us. God designed a woman to serve Him by serving her husband. And if she fails to serve her husband the way that she's supposed to, then she won't serve God. I'm sorry you couldn't have heard last week if you wasn't here to get to the other side of this story. It's on tape. But we have to stick to our subject today. Now I'm going to bring up some controversial things. What about if your husband is unsaved? What do you do? We're getting to some real interesting areas. You don't happen to know it probably, but there's no subject that you can bring up that God hasn't already covered. The problem is we haven't read it. We haven't listened to it. What if your husband is unsaved? The Bible says in 1 Peter 3, very specifically, that the wife is to be in subjection to her own husband. It says that if any obey not the word, they may be one without the word. In other words, it says, if you've got an unsaved mate, you live your life so godly before him that whether you ever speak a word about the gospel to him, he will see Jesus Christ in your life so clearly. He will know. He will know the gospel. And that's what it says. Wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, that if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be one by the conversation, the lifestyle of the wives, while they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. And he actually goes down through several things. He says in verse 1, live the gospel. In verse 2, give them time to observe. Many times the woman may want her husband to get saved so bad she'll put too much pressure on him, too fast. Give him time to observe, to see it. And then the third thing he goes into is don't overdo the exterior department. Don't overdo the exterior department. He actually says to watch out on the outward adorning of your body, your hair and all that stuff. He says spend a lot of time on the interior department. Spend a lot of time on the inner person. That's the way. And then he says this is the way it's been done in the past, verse 5 and 6. He just goes right down through there, gives all the guidelines for a woman that has an unsaved husband. How many of you know when Women's Lib began? You know the Women Liberation Movement? It's been around a long time. You know, it goes back to probably the Garden, we'd say. But do you know that the Corinthian Church had one of the biggest problems with the Women's Lib Movement? It's recorded in the Bible. The Corinthian Church. Here's just two of the things that they had problems with and it was getting into the church. Number one, they were trying to get men's jobs. And number two, they were trying to dress and act like men. And we know the Corinthians had a lot of problems. Because God wrote two of the longest books in the Old Testament to combat that. But it's been around. But the problem with it today is it is being very successful in destroying our homes. We need to know what God says to prevent it. That's why I have a burden to get this message out. What about working wives, working mothers? You say, Preacher, if you're smart, you keep going. I ain't smart, so I'll just stop here for a minute. I'm going to tromp around on some stuff. You take it, I'm not talking to you. God's talking to you. Do you know what Scripture says about a mother with a little child working? Do you know what it says? You're fixing to find out if you don't know. Titus 2, 3 through 5. And by the way, we're going to pick up on the older women at the same time. Titus 2, in verse 3, he says, You older women, your children are already grown up. Here's what you're to do. Stay out of trouble. That's the first thing he says. I didn't say it. Listen. The aged women, likewise, that they be in behavior, it becometh holiness. Not false accusers, not giving them much wine, teachers of good things. You stay out of trouble. Why does he want them to stay out of trouble? Verse 4, he goes on, That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Eight things older women are to teach younger women. And one of them is that you teach them that they are to stay at home with their little children. They are to stay at home, to be workers at home, in the Greek. You work at home and do your work at home. If you have to do some extra work for income, do it at home. If at all possible. You say, well, that's just one passage. You're right, that's just one passage. There's others. You say, you're kidding. No, I'm not kidding. Listen to what Timothy, 1 Timothy 5, verse 14. What does God plan for a young woman to do? This is not unusual because almost every one of them that gets married does it. That's has children. Verse 14, I will therefore that the younger women marry. And he had a context there, dealing with some widows. They lost their husbands. Bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. Did you notice that in both passages there was a negative warning? That if they did not do it, Satan would get an advantage. Both times, both times, they tell them to stay at home with the children. Now, God's not kidding. That's the way it's been. Except in the last 50, 60 years, last 100 years, something has happened to society. Something has happened to society to program us a different way. Well, that's what God says about working wives and mothers. That's not what this preacher says. Our society actually is rebelling against God's standard. And we are reaping the results. We are really reaping the results. I'm saying this this morning for preventing maintenance. Preventing maintenance. I have some stuff here. Let me share this with you. You say, that's just Bible stuff. No, there's more than Bible. There's a secular anthropologist, a very well-known man. Secular. In other words, he's not a preacher. He's not in the religious field. He's just in a secular field. Listen to what he says. This is Marvin Harris. He wrote a book on Why America Changed, Our Cultural Crisis. He says, why do they do it? Why do the mothers work? You're not going to like this, maybe, but here it is. He says, the working woman is the child of consumptive materialism. This started because of materialism. Wanted more, bigger house, fancier house, more clothes, nicer clothes, bigger home, fancier car, and all this stuff. And he goes on. The woman's liberation efforts are created only to justify the materialism that took women into the money-making pursuit. You know what this sounds like? It sounds like scripture. Because the Bible says that any time we go after money for wrong motives, we're going to get ourselves into trouble. The Bible says, for the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Many mothers have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Another verse, they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. The society that we live in has now, and we've even experienced it, has now already put about among us this thing that if you're not working and you're a mother, there's something wrong with you. We have been told that. My wife and I, she's been told that she should be out working and not home with the children. I ought to take all the children over and let my wife go get a job and let them have the children then maybe. Pretty soon they'll be calling up, won't you come back over and get your kids. But this is the atmosphere of society, that the mother, the wife is to be out working and that you're weird if you don't. Let me keep on going. This guy just, that wasn't all he said. They have undermined the husband's role. Now this is interesting, listen to this. They have undermined the husband's role. How did they do that? They have done that by becoming the provider. The husband's role, we saw that last week, is to provide and to protect his family. But we have a co-provider. And I went through the Scriptures with you, how when Eve provided the food for Adam to eat, there was a reversal of roles. And that's exactly what the liberation movement is, is to reverse the roles. Let's get the woman out there on the market. And Satan knows he can destroy the family, especially the Christian family, which he doesn't like. He says they have undermined the husband's role, they have drove male wages down by increasing the supply of workers. A lot of workers out there, and that is true. If you will trace back our economic problems, you will find some interesting things in this area. This is what he's done. They've destroyed the marital procreative imperative. Why do we have so much birth control? You just think about it. It's because we want to do what we want to do. We don't want these little kids in our way, messing up our lifestyle. So we're going to control our life. And even Christians get in on birth control. Birth control is nothing more than another form of abortion. A lot of it actually is an aborted attempt on the fetus. And he goes on. Destroying the male-dominated, two-parent, multi-child, breadwinner family. This is just destroying it. And not only that, and he goes into the social economic problems, how it has increased black unemployment. You say, how in the world does that happen? How does that happen? It does this because a lot of the mothers, you know what they'll do? They'll go out and they'll take any job they can get. What's the easiest ones to find? The low-paid jobs. And in the area of the country where I came from, where there's a lot of black people, the black employment is just staggering. Because the mothers are out there grabbing up all the lower-paid jobs. They'll just take anything. And it's created a real problem in America. Just this one thing. And then he goes on about the testing of these children, of these mothers. He said, these children, on the whole, as we've tested them, have much, and I underline much, much more problems with security. We're raising a nation of insecure people. All because, that doesn't even speak of the juvenile delinquent problem. All because we will not do what we want to do. I mean, we won't do what God wants us to do. It just wrecks society and it wrecks the children. This is why. And I just wonder if we haven't crossed the line in our country where there's a point to where you can't go back to where you have to do it. We're getting awfully close to that line, you know. It's better to live in a little shack than a big fancy home. It's better to drive an old jalopy to have a happy home. I was talking with somebody a while back where they realized that this may have been the very thing that led to the breaking up of their home. With the divorce and the pain that it causes all the children and all of that. Now that's just, that's the matter of submission. Let me share with you quickly the manner of submission. How is the woman to submit to her husband? Ephesians 5.22 says, as unto the Lord. You serve your husband by submitting to him and you're really doing it as to the Lord, the scripture says. Christ is your reason for living, isn't he? If Christ is your reason for living, then Christ is also your reason for submitting. You submit as unto the Lord. And you know what God is going to do to that husband? If he doesn't treat you fair, he's going to thump you. He's got a way of really giving that guy a kick. Because he is taking care of you. You submit yourself to the Lord. Who you submit to controls you. So if you're submitting to your... The woman that goes out and works is actually submitting herself to another man. She is taking herself out from under the authority of her own home and her own husband if she's done it herself. Now if the husband pushes her out, that's something else, he's in charge. But she is actually under the submission and under the control of another man. And he may dictate the way that she should live, the way she should dress, and her lifestyle. Many things that happen. Well, the motive for submission is simply this. Why do you want to submit? It's because if you don't submit to your husband the way that God wants you to, you will dishonor the head. What did scripture say? The scripture says that Christ is the head of the church. Let me start at the first. The husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, and he is the savior of the body. When a woman, and a lot of our lived stuff has produced women that are rebelling and wanting to get out of the home. They listen to some of it. And the husband says, no, why don't you stay here? I'll get another job. And I believe he should. If it comes to the point where we need more money, I'm not going to kick my wife out. That's another thing. You've got to make a lot of money to cover up for the extra expense and gas and wear and tear on your vehicle and babysitters and all this. This has all been figured out. To where you've got to make a lot of money to get ahead before you get out. A lot of them don't understand that they're actually going behind by getting out and doing it. But you, if you do not submit, you dishonor your head, your husband. And if you dishonor him, you dishonor Christ. Well, that's how we submit. The, where was it? The motive of submission is because if she doesn't, she'll dishonor her head. You know, it is never a disgrace. It is never a disgrace for the body to do what the head wants. You know what would disgrace me? If I said to my hand, alright hand, go up in the air. Okay, hand, come down. Other hand, go up in the air. I said, go up in the air. It makes you look like a fool if your body doesn't respond to what it wants. I didn't say, go up, come down. You know, stay down. You know, if your body doesn't do what you want it to do, you know, it disgraces you. This is what happens when a wife does not submit to her husband. She disgraces him and then she disgraces Christ. This is what the scripture teaches here. So, one other thing then, the model of submission is as the church submits to Christ, the wife is to do that. Verse 24, therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. In everything. There's only one exception to that. And that's what we call the Acts 5.29 exception. We must obey God rather than men. We must obey God rather than men. You never will violate that one. And then there's Christ. You know what Christ did in Philippians 2.7? He said He had no reputation and He had the form of a servant. So what is submission? It's letting God do in your life what He wants to do. Study out these passages. I'll give you my sermon notes if you want to read them. But what's the point of all of this? Remember we said in the beginning we wanted to find out what the point of it is? The point is this. Your children will follow your example. Your children will follow your example. And what they see Mommy doing? They see Mommy packing up a bag lunch every morning and going off. And Mommy chunks them off over to a babysitter. Well, that's the way that life is supposed to be. And they grew up thinking that's the way it's supposed to be. And then they're going to do the same way. They're going to chunk their children off. They're going to see their mom and dad get divorced because the wife was not home. That's another subject. The divorce rate. And this one thing. What it's done. But they're going to do it the same way. And what happens to society? It doesn't take very many years before this whole country is going to be destroyed. I wouldn't be surprised. But what if we keep on the way we're going now without a revival in 10 years? The American scene is going to be destroyed. You know, I was in a country 18 years ago that has followed this woman's liberation principle. And now it is against the law for the woman to stay in the home. You will go to jail if you do not get a job. If you have a baby, you have so much time to have your baby and get back on your job or you go to jail. You think I'm full of baloney? That's the product of woman's lead and socialistic theology. And that's where we're heading. Why? Because we're not doing what God says as a nation. We're turning away. Our churches are not preaching the principle of the husband as the breadwinner, the wife as the homemaker. And we're going down the tubes. Well, that's the point of it. Your children will follow your example. You're to be a spirit-filled, fruit-filled, joyful wife. That will produce the type of men like John Quincy Adams. He said, all that I am, my mother made me. And it wasn't because his mother was off in a store clerking clothes and stuff. What about Abe Lincoln? He said, all that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. Dr. D.L. Moody, he said, all that I have ever accomplished in life, I owe to my mother. The great men of this world have been produced by great mothers that stayed at home. We don't produce great men by accident. Well, maybe you can use that to give to somebody. And you know, not only with our home, with our souls, we will not do what God says to do. God says, you do this for your home and it will survive. And God says, you do this for your soul and your soul will survive. Do you want to go to heaven? Do you want to go to heaven? Very simply, if you want to go to heaven, then all you need to do is just to bow before God and say, God, I am lost. I am a sinner. And I received, I received by faith, your provision. What's God's provision? When Jesus Christ hung on the cross, He died in your place as your substitute. Will you admit that you're a sinner? You say, yeah, I'll admit that I'm a sinner. If you will admit that you're a sinner, then God will save you. Because Jesus said, I have come to seek and to save the lost. I came to save sinners. That's the only people that He will save is a sinner. And if you will admit that and say, Lord, I am lost. I'm a sinner. I believe that Christ died on the cross in my place. And I now by faith just accept Jesus as my Savior. He'll save you. Let's bow our heads and close our eyes. Would you like to be saved? Think about all your life, maybe you've gone this far and you have no assurance in your heart that if you died, you'd go to heaven. Wouldn't it be wonderful to know this morning that Jesus could come into your heart? That you could have your sins forgiven and that you could go to heaven? I believe a lot of mothers are failing because they simply don't have Jesus in their life. They don't know any better. But wouldn't you like to have Jesus in your heart? We're not going to make this a long invitation, but if you'd like to invite Jesus into your heart, won't you just simply tell Him that you're a sinner, where you sit in your heart, draw a circle around yourself, just you and God there, and say, God, I'm a sinner. I know I'm lost. I don't want to be. I believe you died for me on the cross. I believe you love me. And I believe you died for me. And I now by faith ask you to come into my heart and save me. The best I know how, Lord. I just give myself to you. Father, I thank you that we could just simply do that and trust Jesus as our Savior. And I thank you, Father, that you loved us enough to come down and die for us and give us an example. Anyone else here? While our heads are still bowed and our eyes are closed, would you like to invite Jesus in? He sees your heart. While our heads are bowed and our eyes are closed, if you invited Christ in, just as an evidence of your sincerity, won't you just slip your hand up and say, God, I meant it? Just slip it back up and back down and say, Lord, I meant it. Anyone? Anyone? I'll be your witness before God. Thank you, Father, for our time we've had now in Jesus' name. Amen.
