Psalms 91:1

IN the secret place of the most High] He that maketh God his defence and trust, shall perceive his protection to be a most sure safeguard, psal. 5. 12.

secret place] Psalms 32:7.

abide] Heb. lodge.

Psalms 91:2

I will say of the Lord] He prayeth to the LORD, out of confidence of the aforesaid protection.

Psalms 91:3

Surely he shall deliver thee] Or, For he will deliver thee.

he shall deliver thee] Having practised in the second verse what he taught in the first, now he teacheth others to do the like, psal. 32. 8. and 34. 11.

from the snare of the fowler] Psalms 124:7. God will deliver thee from secret and open dangers.

Psalms 91:4

with his feathers] As fowls hover over their young with their wings, Deuteronomy 32:11. and Deuteronomy 17:8.

his truth shall be thy shield and buckler] That is, his faithfull keeping of his promise to help thee in thy necessity.

Psalms 91:8

Onely with thine eyes shalt thou behold] Thou shalt be but a looker on, not a feeler of those miseries.

Psalms 91:11

he shall give his angels charge over thee] Matthew 4:6. Luke 4. 10. God hath appointed his angels to defend his servants in their vocation, psal. 34. 7.

Psalms 91:13

adder] Or, asp.

the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet] Thou shalt not onely be preserved from all evil, but also overcome it and triumph over it, Romans 16:20.

Psalms 91:14

Because he hath set his love upon me] To assure the faithfull of Gods protection, he bringeth in God to confirm the same.

I will set him on high] Above all dangers, or fear of them, psal. 61. 2.

Psalms 91:15

call upon me] Psalms 50:15.

Psalms 91:16

With long life will I satisfie him] And not cut him off among others, v. 7. But all this must be understood conditionally, If God see it fitting: for a good man may die by plague or war, 2 Chron. 35. 23.

long life] Heb. length of days.
