Who Are You Going To Believe: Creation Verses Evolution Genesis 1:1 ; Colossians 2:8

    Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."    

    Colossians 2:8 "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."

Today there is a battle raging for the souls of men. It is fought on many fronts but I think one of the most important fronts in the battle is the fight between God as Creator and evolution as the cause. It is a battle for the very souls of men because if men reject the Creator he in fact rejects any hope he has for eternity. Today we have many theories of how things got started. J.V. McGee says, "There are a great many theories as to how the world began, but all of them can be boiled down to fit into a twofold classification: one is creation, and the other is speculation." (McGee, J.V. Through the Bible with J. Vernon McGee, Vol. 1 p.8) I- The Theories of How Things Arrived:

First, let me explain what a scientific theory is. In the fifth grade science book Discovering Science under Scientific Methods the process of science is explained as (1) Identify Problems, (2) Make Observations, (3) State Hypothesis (A hypothesis is a likely explanation of the problem), (4) Test Hypothesis, (5) Collect Data, (6) Make Conclusions. There are basically three theories of how matter came to be. First is Atheistic Materialism. We call this the big bang theory, or organic evolution. This teaches that all life evolved apart from any supernatural force. The second is Theistic Evolution which seeks to combine both Moses and Darwin and thus to satisfy the lie of evolution by teaching that God originally created all matter then sat back and watched it evolve. USA Today in 1996 had an article concerning Pope John Paul II embracing this theory. The Pope says, "Today...new knowledge leads to recognition of the theory of evolution as more than a hypothesis." (USA TODAY, Friday October 25, 1996 p 3a.) The next thought is Special Creation which says a loving God created us in His image by His Son. John 1:3 "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."

    Colossians 1:16 "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him."

    Speaking of Genesis 1:1 Dr. Henry Morris says, "This simple declarative statement can only have come by divine revelation...It is the first and only statement of real creation in all the cosmogonies of all the nation of past or present." (Morris, Henry M. Biblical Creationism, Baker Books, Grand Rapids Michigan. 1993, p.17) We know that God created all matter out of nothing.

II- A Matter of Faith!

    I do not ask the question that is the sermon title, "Who are you going to believe" lightly or as a pun. Both evolution and creation require faith to believe what is taught. Romans 1:20 "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse."

    Hebrews 11:3 "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

We need to understand that for us to believe evolution we must swallow a lot more by faith than it takes to believe in God as Creator. Allow me to illustrate. Harry Emerson Fosdick wrote that the biologist tell us that if man has eyes, it is because the light waves beat on the skin and the eyes came out in answer; that if he has ears, it is because the sound waves were there first, and the ears came out to hear. He says that evolutionist assert that all the powers of man have come in response to an environment; that if there had been no water, there would have been no fins; if there had been no air, there would have been no wings; if there had been no land, there would have been no legs." (Quoted in Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations, Paul Lee Tan , Assurance Publishers, Rockville, Maryland. p.4396.) It looks to me that this is a giant leap of faith. We must reject evolution because it rejects God and the self-revelation God to mankind. It denies the fall of man and the fact that man is a sinner and needs a Savior. It denies the virgin birth of Christ and the blood atonement.

III- Creation and Evolution: Are They Compatible?

Allow me to lay the Genesis account of creation beside what evolution teaches and see if they are compatible. I developed this material from a quote of Dr. Henry Morris. (Quoted in Wilmington’s Guide to the Bible, p. 18.) Genesis teaches that life began on dry land. Genesis 1:11-12 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. ¹² And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. Evolution teaches it began in some remote sea bottom. Genesis declares birds existed before insects. Genesis 1:20 ;24 "And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. …²⁴ And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so." Evolution teaches the reverse order and birds may have come from insects. Genesis states that birds and fish were created at the same time. Genesis 1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. Evolution tries to tell us that fishes evolved hundreds of billions of years before birds developed. Genesis states 10 time that every creature was to reproduce after its kind. (We will discuss this in a moment.) Evolution says that everything came from a common ancestor and developed into natures many faceted areas and types of life. Genesis teaches us that man was made from the dust of the ground by a loving God. Gen Genesis 1:26-27 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… ²⁷ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

    Genesis 2:7 "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

Evolution tries to tell us that man came from an upright ape or a subhuman ape. Genesis tells us that God took a part out of Adams side and make woman. Genesis 2:21-23 "And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; ²² And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. ²³ And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." Evolution has the double problem of the evolution of both male and female. (we will discuss this in a moment) Genesis says man was an vegetarian originally. Genesis 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. Evolution says he probably was a head hunting cannibal. So we can say that evolution and the creation account of Genesis when laid side by side do not complement each other and in fact lie in contradiction of each other. One must be therefore a lie. My guess is it is evolution.

IV- The Case Against Evolution:

Evolution is built on the every changing process of science that goes around in circles. There has been many wild theories put forth to explain things. They say giant molecule acquired the ability to duplicate themselves. Someone even said we came from garbage left by prehistoric intelligence space life. According to the theory of evolution the crudest life forms evolved first and they in turn evolved into more complex life. According to this theory the most complex life forms, i.e. large animals, should be on top in the sediment of matter. This is not the case when archaeologist dig into the earth. The order of life is all jumbled up with the fossils of complex creatures on the bottom and simple creatures on the top. Looks to me like they were all created at the same time.

V- The Missing Link!

The famous missing link of evolution has been sought and claimed by many. They look for evidence that will show that man came from apes. There has been many claims of this discovery. These are taught in our public schools as facts when at best they are a hoax and at worst a lie. A- Neanderthal Man- He was found in the Neander Valley of Germany in 1856. The find consist of a skull and several bones. This discovery actually turned out to be a group of people suffering from rickets which caused them to stoop. B- Java Man- Called the "Erect Ape Man". Was found in 1891. The find was only on skull cap. Not a skull but a skull cap. One year later a thigh bone and two molar teeth were found 50 feet way. The scientist didn’t reveal until later that he also found 2 human skulls at that level also. C- Piltdown Man- 1912 George Dawson in Piltdown England. The find was a skull and a few teeth. It was declared to be 500,000 to 750,00 years old. Later in 1950 test found the skull had been stained by iron salt and the teeth filled down to give it an appearance of age. This was a hoax played on the professor that got out of hand. D- Peking Man- China 1912 and 1937. This evidence had been lost in moving. It is now thought to have been monkeys or gorillas killed for food. E- Nebraska Man- 1922. This find is my favorite. It consisted of only one tooth. An artist drew a picture to show what he looked like. In 1927 it was discovered to be a tooth of an extinct pig. Now we are evolving from the hog lot.

VI- Laws of Science Prove Evolution Impossible!

A- The First Law of Thermodynamics- "Energy can be changed from one form to another, but it cannot be created nor destroyed." When God created matter He created it all in the form of energy. He only created a fixed amount. We cannot change this amount by adding to or taking away from it. B- The second law of Thermodynamics- This law states that when energy is being transformed from one state to another, some of it is turned into heat energy which CANNOT be converted back into useful form.

    Hebrews 1:10-12 HCSB And: In the beginning, Lord, You established the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands; ¹¹ they will perish, but You remain. They will all wear out like clothing; ¹²You will roll them up like a cloak, and they will be changed like a robe. But You are the same, and Your years will never end.

    We live in a universe winding down not building up as evolution says it is.

    C- Law of Biogenesis: As we have previously mentioned this law simply states that each animal reproduces after its kind.

    Genesis 1:11, Genesis 1:21, Genesis 1:24-25 declare this to be so in creation. Genesis 1:11 "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so."

    Genesis 1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

    Genesis 1:24-25 "And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good."

We see this in fact is the case. Dogs have dogs, cats have cats, people have people. Each after it’s kind. Evolution has got to break this law because it says that one kind had another kind of creature. But what about the Dinosaurs. Did man and the dinosaurs live at the same time? Evolutionist say no way. A cave wall in Rhodesia has a painting of a Brontosaurs. These caves were known to have been inhabited till 1500 B.C. We can rationally understand that man had to see this creature to draw it on the cave walls. Job 40:15-17 "Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. ¹⁶ Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. ¹⁷ He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together." These are commonly called elephants. Every see an elephants tail it is nothing like a cedar tree? D- The Evolution of the Sexes. We have previously stated that is a twofold problem for evolution. This is not scientific proof or reproof for evolution but is a double whammy for evolution. The male and the female of each species must be completely compatible for them to produce offspring. The male and the female would have to develop independently of each other at the precious same rate for evolution to occur. At each mutation the male and female would have to be totally compatible and capable of producing offspring. This not only doubles the evolution but adds another mathematical impossibility to an already absurd improbability.

VII- Conclusion:

Allow me to tell us why it is important that we see that we have a loving Father who created us with this quote. Said Dr. Joseph A. Parker: "some have found fault with me. They say I am old fashioned and out of date; I am always quoting the Bible; why not turn to science this morning. There is a poor widow here who has lost her only son. She wants to know if she will see him again. Science shall give the answer, and I will put the Book away." So he took the Book and put it on the seat behind. "Will this woman see here son again? Where is he? Does death end all? What has science to say?" Here a long pause. "We are waiting for an answer, the woman is anxious." Another long pause. "The woman’s heart is breaking. Science must speak. Nothing to say? Surely? Then we must take the Book," and here he reverently replaced it, and with great deliberation opened it and read: I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me... The dead shall arise... for this corruptible must put on in corruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. O death, where is thy sing.. I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God." Closing the Book, and patting it affectionately, he said, "We will stick to the Book!" Who are you going to believe, Darwin and the philosophy of men or God’s revelation?
