Context — God's Judgment on the Templegenerated
Jeremiah 7:14 serves as a stark reminder of God's judgment. The verse follows a declaration of the people's unfaithfulness and the consequences that await them. God draws a parallel between the destruction of Shiloh, where the Ark was once kept, and the impending fate of the temple, emphasizing that trust in the temple is misplaced if the people do not turn back to Him.

The Key Word — עָשִׂ֜יתִי, 'a.Si.tigenerated
The verb עָשָׂה (asah) means to do or make, indicating actions that can range from creating to executing. It is a fundamental verb in Hebrew, appearing over 2,600 times, and is used in various contexts throughout the Bible.
In this verse, the first-person perfect form 'a.Si.ti indicates a completed action that God has taken in the past, which He will replicate in the future. The use of this verb underscores the certainty of judgment, as God has previously acted decisively against unfaithfulness.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The main verb of the verse is עָשִׂ֜יתִי, I did, which governs the entire structure. It is followed by a series of phrases that elaborate on what God will do and the subjects of His judgment.
The sentence structure emphasizes the relationship between the actions of God and the consequences for the people, showing a clear cause-and-effect dynamic in the warning.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates עָשִׂ֜יתִי with ἐποίησα (epoiēsa), meaning I did. This choice reflects a direct correspondence to the Hebrew, maintaining the sense of past action that will be repeated.
The translation choice indicates that the Greek translators understood the significance of God's actions in history, linking them to the present warning.
In plain words — the whole versegenerated
Jeremiah 7:14 warns that just as God judged Shiloh, He will now bring judgment upon the temple. This serves as a reminder that trust in the temple is meaningless if the people do not return to God.
Frequently Asked Questionsgenerated
God is warning that the same judgment that fell upon Shiloh, a place of past worship that was destroyed, will now come upon the temple if the people do not repent.
Shiloh was the first central sanctuary for the Israelites, and its destruction serves as a historical precedent for God's judgment against unfaithfulness.
This phrase refers to the temple in Jerusalem, which is considered God's dwelling place and a symbol of His presence among His people.
It serves as a reminder that places of worship and faith must be treated with reverence and that true trust must be placed in God rather than in physical structures.
Reflection Questionsgenerated
- In what ways do I place my trust in physical structures rather than in God?
- How can I ensure that my faith is genuine and not merely ritualistic?
- What lessons can I learn from the fate of Shiloh in relation to my own spiritual life?
- How can I encourage others to focus on a true relationship with God rather than just the outward forms of worship?

House
Till their sojourn in Egypt the Hebrews dwelt in tents. They then for the first time inhabited cities (Gen. 47:3; Ex. 12:7; Heb. 11:9). From the earliest times the Assyrians and the Canaanites were builders of cities. The Hebrews after the Conquest took possession of the captured cities, and seem to have followed the methods of building that had been pursued by the Canaanites. Reference is made to the stone (1 Kings 7:9; Isa. 9:10) and marble (1 Chr. 29:2) used in building, and to the internal wood-work of the houses (
The houses of the rural poor in Egypt, as well as in most parts of Syria, Arabia and Persia, are generally mere huts of mud or sunburnt bricks. In some parts of Palestine and Arabia stone is used, and in certain districts caves in the rocks are used as dwellings. (Amos 5:11) The houses are usually of one story only, viz., the ground floor, and often contain only one apartment. Sometimes a small court for the cattle is attached; and in some cases the cattle are housed in the same building, or the live in a raised platform, and, the cattle round them on the ground. The universal mode of building houses in the East, is in the form of a hollow square, with an open court or yard in the center; which is thus entirely shut in by the walls of the house around it. Into this court all the windows open, there being usually no windows towards the street. Some houses of large size require several courts, and these usually communicate with each other. These courts are commonly paved; and in many large houses parts of them are planted with shrubs and trees, Ps 84:3 128:3; they have also, when possible, a fountain in them, often with a jet d’ eau, 2Sa 17:18. It is customary in many houses to extend an awning over the whole court in hot…

שִׁלוֹ (Shiyloh) refers to Shiloh, a significant location in ancient Palestine, known as a place of rest. It served as a temporary home for the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle, and is associated with the upbringing of the prophet Samuel. The name is linked to the Hebrew root meaning 'rest' and is also connected to the term for a Shilonite, שִׁילֹנִי.

Shiloh
Generally understood as denoting the Messiah, “the peaceful one,” as the word signifies (Gen. 49:10). The Vulgate Version translates the word, “he who is to be sent,” in allusion to the Messiah; the Revised Version, margin, “till he come to Shiloh;” and the LXX., “until that which is his shall come to Shiloh.” It is most simple and natural to render the expression, as in the Authorized Version, “till Shiloh come,” interpreting it as a proper name (comp. Isa. 9:6).
Shiloh, a place of rest, a city of Ephraim, “on the north side of Bethel,” from which it is distant 10 miles (Judg. 21:19); the modern Seilun (the Arabic for Shiloh), a “mass of shapeless ruins.” Here the tabernacle was set up after the…
(place of rest), a city of Ephraim. In (Judges 21:19) it is said that Shiloh is "on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem and on the south of Lebonah." In agreement with this the traveller of our own city, going north from Jerusalem, lodges the first night at Beitin , the ancient Bethel; the next day, at the distance of a few hours, turns aside to the right, in order to visit Seilun , the Arabic for Shiloh; and then passing through the narrow wady which brings him to the main road, leaves el-Lebban , the Lebonah of Scripture, on the left, as he pursues "the highway" to Nublus , the ancient Shechem. [SHECHEM] Shiloh was one of the earliest and most sacred of the Hebrew sanctuaries. The ark of the covenant, which had been kept at Gilgal during the progress of the conquest, (
1. This term is used, Ge 49:10, to denote the Messiah, the coming of whom Jacob foretells in these words: "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be;" that is, until the time of Christ, Judah’s self-governments as a tribe should not ceases. It must be admitted, however, that the literal signification of the word is not well ascertained. Some translate, "The scepter shall not depart from Judah till he comes to whom it belongs." Others, with more probability, till the coming of the Peacemaker, or of the One desired.
2. A famous city of Ephraim, about ten miles south of Shechem, and twenty-four north of Jerusalem. Here Joshua assembled the people to make the second distribution of the Land of Promise; and her the tabernacle of the…
