Syriac reads “and he was commanding thirty men,” which gives the apparent meaning of the verse. If, as seems likely, the “thirty” were the officers of David’s guard of six hundred warriors (1 Samuel 23:13; 1 Samuel 30:10; 2 Samuel 15:18), called “the mighty men,” or heroes (2 Samuel 10:7; 2 Samuel 20:7; 1 Kings 1:8). each captain would lead about twenty men. Adina’s corps is mentioned perhaps as being larger than usual.

CambridgeThe Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges42. and thirty with him] This clause is probably a marginal note taken into the text at the wrong place. It was apparently meant to stand after the name of Uriah the Hittite (1 Chronicles 11:41) by some scribe who followed our present text and referred “the sons of Hashem” (1 Chronicles 11:34) to Azmaveth and Eliahba (1 Chronicles 11:33), thus reckoning just thirty names from Asahel to Uriah. The clause should be read either “and up to him are thirty” or “and all of them are thirty” (cp. 2 Samuel 23:39).

The four witnesses to this verse — Masoretic, Septuagint, Samaritan, Qumran
The Masoretic Text reads: 'עֲדִינָ֨א בֶן־ שִׁיזָ֜א הָרֽאוּבֵנִ֗י רֹ֛אשׁ לָרֽאוּבֵנִ֖י וְעָלָ֥יו שְׁלוֹשִֽׁים׃ ס' which translates to 'Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, chief of the Reubenites, and the thirty with him.' The Septuagint closely matches this text, with 7 out of 8 words corresponding to the Masoretic Text, although the word order and articles differ as per the Greek structure. The Samaritan Pentateuch and the Dead Sea Scrolls do not provide additional variants for this specific verse, indicating a strong agreement among the witnesses regarding the content of this verse.

(1) In Anglo-Saxon, had the meaning "from," "away from" (as the strengthened form "off" has still), and was not used for genitive or possessive relations, these being expressed by special case-forms. In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.

chef: The English word is in the King James Version of Old Testament the translation of some 17 different Hebrew words, most frequently of ro'sh, "head," sar, "prince," and re'shith, "beginning." The principal changes made by the Revised Version (British and American) are:
