Psalms 83:3

Psalms 83:3 in Multiple Translations

With cunning they scheme against Your people and conspire against those You cherish,

They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.

They take crafty counsel against thy people, And consult together against thy hidden ones.

They have made wise designs against your people, talking together against those whom you keep in a secret place.

They invent cunning plans to conspire against your people; they plot against those you treasure.

They haue taken craftie counsell against thy people, and haue consulted against thy secret ones.

Against Thy people they take crafty counsel, And consult against Thy hidden ones.

They conspire with cunning against your people. They plot against your cherished ones.

They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.

My soul longeth and fainteth for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God.

They are secretly planning to do things to harm us, your people; they are ◄conspiring together against/planning how to defeat► the people whom you protect.

Psalms 83:3 Summary

[Psalms 83:3 tells us that God's enemies are clever and deceitful in their plans against His people, but God is all-powerful and wise, and He will ultimately triumph over them (Psalms 2:1-12, 1 Peter 5:8). As believers, we can trust in God's power and wisdom to protect us from the schemes of His enemies, and we can put on the full armor of God to defend ourselves (Ephesians 6:10-18, Proverbs 3:5-6). God cherishes His people and will not let them be destroyed, as seen in Deuteronomy 7:6 and 1 Peter 2:9, and we can have confidence in His love and protection for us.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for God's enemies to scheme against His people with cunning?

This refers to the clever and deceitful plans of those who oppose God and His people, as seen in Psalms 83:3, and is reminiscent of the schemes of Satan against God's people in Job 1:9-11 and 1 Peter 5:8.

The people God cherishes are His chosen ones, the Israelites, and by extension, all those who put their faith in Him, as seen in Deuteronomy 7:6 and 1 Peter 2:9.

How can we as believers protect ourselves from the cunning schemes of God's enemies?

We can protect ourselves by putting on the full armor of God, as described in Ephesians 6:10-18, and by trusting in God's power and wisdom, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6 and Psalms 23:4.

What is the ultimate goal of God's enemies in scheming against His people?

The ultimate goal of God's enemies is to erase His people from the face of the earth and to forget the name of Israel, as seen in Psalms 83:4, but God will ultimately triumph over them, as seen in Psalms 2:1-12 and Revelation 19:11-21.

Gill's Exposition on Psalms 83:3

They have taken crafty counsel against thy people,.... The people of Israel, hereafter named, whom God had chosen and avouched to be his people; these they dealt subtlety with, as the king of Egypt

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Psalms 83:3

They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people - They combine craft with violence.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Psalms 83:3

i.e. Thy people of Israel, as it is explained in the foregoing words, and in the next verse; who are called God’ s hidden or secret ones, to intimate the singular care and respect which God hath to them, as to his peculiar treasure, as they are called, , whom he will hide and preserve in the secret of his presence, and under the shadow of his wings; and withal, to note their folly in seeking the destruction of those whom God was engaged and resolved to protect.

Trapp's Commentary on Psalms 83:3

Psalms 83:3 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.Ver. 3. They have taken crafty counsel, &c.] They have negotiated this league with much subtilty and solicitation, conferunt et captant consilia, they are cruel crafties. Malignaverunt consilium, saith the Vulgate. And consulted against thy hidden ones] Hidden under the hollow of thy hand, under the shadow of thy wing; and therefore safe from strife of tongues or force of hands, Psalms 27:5; Psalms 31:21, Commodum instituto epithetum. The Greek rendereth it, Thy saints, such as whose life is hid with Christ in God, Colossians 3:3 1 John 3:2. The same Hebrew word is used for the inward oracle of the temple, Ezekiel 7:22, a type of heaven, the saints’ country.

Ellicott's Commentary on Psalms 83:3

(3) They have taken crafty counsel.—Literally, They have made their plot crafty; or, as we say, “They have laid a deep plot.” Hidden ones—i.e., those under God’s close protection, as in Psalms 17:8; Psalms 27:5; Psalms 31:20.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Psalms 83:3

Verse 3. Consulted against thy hidden ones.] צפוניך tsephuneycha, Thy hidden things; places; persons. "The hidden things in thy treasures." - CHALDEE. "Thy holy ones." - SYRIAC. "Thy saints." - VULGATE and SEPTUAGINT; and so the AEthiopic and Arabic. The people of Israel are probably meant. Or perhaps the temple, the ark, and the treasures of the temple, are intended.

Cambridge Bible on Psalms 83:3

3. They have taken … and consulted] They are taking … and consulting together. Jehovah’s hidden ones are His people whom He conceals in His pavilion in the day of trouble (Psalms 27:5; Psalms 31:20), those to whom He has given an asylum from their enemies. The later Greek Versions (Aq. Symm. Theod.) and Jerome read the singular, thy secret place, i.e. the temple, cp. Ezekiel 7:22.

Barnes' Notes on Psalms 83:3

They have taken crafty counsel - The one word translated “have taken crafty” - ערם ‛âram - means properly to make naked; and then, to be crafty, cunning, malignant, 1 Samuel 23:22.

Whedon's Commentary on Psalms 83:3

3. Crafty counsel—Hebrew, Craftily plotted a secret. Both the object and the plan of execution were a secret.
