Nehemiah 11:10 Summary

[Nehemiah 11:10 lists the names of two priests, Jedaiah and Jachin, who were part of the group of people that returned to Jerusalem to help rebuild the city, as seen in Nehemiah 7:6 and Ezra 2:1-2. This verse shows that God is interested in the details of our lives and that every person has a role to play in His plan. Just like the priests in Nehemiah 11:10, we can serve God and our communities by using our unique gifts and talents, as encouraged in Romans 12:4-8 and 1 Corinthians 12:4-11. By doing so, we can be part of something bigger than ourselves and help bring restoration and renewal to those around us.]

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Jedaiah son of Joiarib in Nehemiah 11:10?

Jedaiah son of Joiarib was a priest who returned to Jerusalem with the first group of exiles, as listed in Nehemiah 11:10, and his family is also mentioned in 1 Chronicles 9:10 and Ezra 2:36, showing their dedication to serving God.

What role did Jachin play in the community?

Although the Bible does not specify Jachin's role in Nehemiah 11:10, we can infer from other verses like Exodus 32:18 and 1 Kings 7:21 that individuals with this name often held positions of importance or were involved in significant events, such as the construction of the temple or the organization of the priests.

Why are the names of these priests listed in Nehemiah 11:10?

The names of these priests, including Jedaiah and Jachin, are listed in Nehemiah 11:10 to demonstrate God's faithfulness to His people and to highlight the importance of the priestly lineage in the restoration of Jerusalem, as seen in verses like Ezra 2:61 and Nehemiah 7:64, which emphasize the role of the priests in the community.

How does this verse relate to the rest of the book of Nehemiah?

Nehemiah 11:10 is part of a larger list of people who returned to Jerusalem and helped rebuild the city, which is a major theme in the book of Nehemiah, as seen in Nehemiah 7:6 and Nehemiah 11:1-2, where the focus is on the restoration of the city and the reestablishment of the community.

Reflection Questions

  1. What can we learn from the example of Jedaiah and Jachin about serving God and our communities?
  2. How does the listing of names in Nehemiah 11:10 remind us of God's faithfulness and attention to detail in our own lives?
  3. In what ways can we, like the priests in Nehemiah 11:10, contribute to the rebuilding and restoration of our own communities and churches?
  4. What role do you think the priests played in the spiritual life of the community, and how can we apply that to our own lives today?

Cambridge Bible on Nehemiah 11:10

10. Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, Jachin] The parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 9:10 has ‘Jedaiah, and Jehoiarib, Jachin.’ As these three are the names of well-known priestly houses (cf. 1 Chronicles 24:7, Jehoiarib the first, Jedaiah the second, Jachin the one and twentieth in the twenty-four), ‘the son of’ may possibly be an interpolation. If the text is correct, ‘Jedaiah’ must here represent a branch of the house of Joiarib.

LIST OF THE CHIEFS OF THE , Nehemiah 11:3-16.A comparison of this list with that of 1 Chronicles 9, (where see notes,) shows that they both agree in their plan, and in a considerable number of their names.
