Context — God Remembers Those Who Repent
42then I will remember My covenant with Jacob and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.
43For the land will be abandoned by them, and it will enjoy its Sabbaths by lying desolate without them. And they will pay the penalty for their iniquity, because they rejected My ordinances and abhorred My statutes. 44Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject or despise them so as to destroy them and break My covenant with them; for I am the LORD their God.Cross References

This is what the Lord GOD says: Because the enemy has said of you, ‘Aha! The ancient heights have become our possession,’ therefore prophesy and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: Because they have made you desolate and have trampled you on every side, so that you became a possession of the rest of the nations and were taken up in slander by the lips of their talkers, therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD. This is what the Lord GOD says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the desolate ruins and abandoned cities, which have become a spoil and a mockery to the rest of the nations around you. Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Surely in My burning zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, who took My land as their own possession with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, so that its pastureland became plunder. Therefore, prophesy concerning the land of Israel and tell the mountains and hills, the ravines and valleys, that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I have spoken in My burning zeal because you have endured the reproach of the nations. Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I have sworn with an uplifted hand that surely the nations around you will endure reproach of their own. But you, O mountains of Israel, will produce branches and bear fruit for My people Israel, for they will soon come home. For behold, I am on your side; I will turn toward you, and you will be tilled and sown. I will multiply the people upon you—the house of Israel in its entirety. The cities will be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt. I will fill you with people and animals, and they will multiply and be fruitful. I will make you as inhabited as you once were, and I will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the LORD. Yes, I will cause My people Israel to walk upon you; they will possess you, and you will be their inheritance, and you will no longer deprive them of their children. For this is what the Lord GOD says: Because people say to you, ‘You devour men and deprive your nation of its children,’ therefore you will no longer devour men or deprive your nation of its children, declares the Lord GOD. I will no longer allow the taunts of the nations to be heard against you, and you will no longer endure the reproach of the peoples or cause your nation to stumble, declares the Lord GOD.” |

Leviticus 26:42 Summary
[Leviticus 26:42 means that when God's people turn back to Him and confess their sins, He will remember the promises He made to their ancestors, like Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham, and He will take care of the land He gave them, just like a good shepherd takes care of his flock, as seen in Psalm 23:1-4. This shows that God is a faithful and loving God who always keeps His promises, as mentioned in Deuteronomy 7:9. When we trust in God's covenant promises, we can have confidence that He will always be with us and take care of us, no matter what challenges we face, as seen in Romans 8:28 and Jeremiah 29:11.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for God to remember His covenant with the patriarchs?
When God remembers His covenant with Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham, as mentioned in Leviticus 26:42, it means He recalls and honors the promises He made to them, such as the promise of a multitude of descendants and the gift of the land, as seen in Genesis 12:2-3 and Genesis 17:1-8.
How does God's remembering the land relate to His people?
God's remembering the land, as stated in Leviticus 26:42, is connected to His care for His people, just as a shepherd cares for his flock, as seen in Psalm 23:1-4, and His desire to restore them to the land He promised them, as mentioned in Deuteronomy 30:1-10.
What is the condition for God to remember His covenant and the land?
According to Leviticus 26:40-42, the condition for God to remember His covenant and the land is that His people must confess their iniquity, humble their hearts, and make amends for their sin, which is a call to repentance and faith, as seen in 1 John 1:9 and Romans 3:23-24.
Does God's remembering His covenant mean He will immediately restore His people?
No, God's remembering His covenant does not necessarily mean immediate restoration, as seen in the context of Leviticus 26:43-44, where God's people are still in the land of their enemies, but it does mean that God has not forgotten His promises and will ultimately fulfill them, as mentioned in Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 11:25-27.
