Leviticus 11:24 Summary

This verse is saying that if you touch certain unclean creatures, you will become unclean too, until the evening. This means you won't be able to participate in worship or other sacred activities until you have purified yourself, as seen in Leviticus 11:25. It's like when we sin, we become separated from God, but through repentance and forgiveness, we can be made clean again, as stated in 1 John 1:9. By following God's commands, we can live a life that is pleasing to Him and reflects our love for Him, as seen in John 14:15.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of creatures is God referring to in Leviticus 11:24?

The creatures mentioned in Leviticus 11:24 are the ones described in the previous verses, such as those flying insects that have four legs and are detestable to the Israelites, as stated in Leviticus 11:23. These creatures are considered unclean and make anyone who touches them unclean until evening.

Why did God declare these creatures unclean?

God declared these creatures unclean to teach the Israelites the importance of separating themselves from things that are not holy, as stated in Leviticus 11:44-45. By following God's commands regarding clean and unclean animals, the Israelites were reminded of their unique status as God's chosen people and their need to be set apart from the surrounding nations.

What is the significance of being unclean until evening?

Being unclean until evening, as mentioned in Leviticus 11:24, meant that the person who touched the unclean creature was not allowed to participate in worship or other sacred activities until they had purified themselves, usually through washing and waiting until the next day, as seen in Leviticus 11:25 and Numbers 19:11-12.

How does this verse apply to us today?

Although we are not under the same ceremonial laws as the Israelites, Leviticus 11:24 reminds us of the importance of living a life of purity and holiness, as stated in 1 Peter 1:16. We are called to be separate from the world and to live according to God's standards, as stated in 2 Corinthians 6:17-18.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some things in my life that may be 'unclean' and separate me from God's presence?
  2. How can I apply the principle of separation from unclean things to my daily life, as seen in Leviticus 11:24?
  3. What are some ways I can 'purify' myself and become clean before God, as mentioned in 1 John 1:9?
  4. How can I balance the need for separation from the world with the command to engage with and love the people around me, as seen in Matthew 22:37-40?

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Leviticus 11:24

And such were excluded both from the courts of God’ s house, and from free conversation with other men. Until the even; which possibly might signify that even the smallest defilements could not be cleansed but by the death of Christ, who was to come and offer up himself in the evening, or end, or declining age of the world, as the prophets signify, and the apostle expresseth, .

Trapp's Commentary on Leviticus 11:24

Leviticus 11:24 And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even.Ver. 24. Whosoever toucheth the carcass.] This and the like signified that all, even the least sins, are to be purged through Christ, and carefully cast away.

Ellicott's Commentary on Leviticus 11:24

(24) And for these ye shall be unclean.—Rather, and by these ye shall be defiled, that is, the beasts and animals specified in Leviticus 11:26-27. Shall be unclean until the even.—For coming in contact with the dead body of the animals contracts defilement for the rest of the day, and till the beginning of a new day, which took place after sunset (comp. Leviticus 23:32). During these hours of legal uncleanness he was not allowed to enter the sanctuary, touch any sacred thing, or have intercourse with those who were legally clean, since contact with one who has contracted legal defilement imparted defilement to both persons and things.

Cambridge Bible on Leviticus 11:24

24–28. Uncleanness caused by Dead Bodies (See introductory note on Leviticus 11:20-23.) Leviticus 11:24-25 are a general introduction. ‘And by these’ (Leviticus 11:24) refers to what follows, not to the ‘winged creeping things’ of Leviticus 11:23. (a) touching or bearing the carcase of (α) beasts specified in Leviticus 11:26-27 or (β) swarming things specified in Leviticus 11:29-30 caused uncleanness till the even; if they were carried, the clothes must also be washed. (b) further cases of defilement were caused by a carcase, (α) a vessel (Leviticus 11:32-33), (β) food (Leviticus 11:34), (γ) ovens, etc. (Leviticus 11:35), (δ) water in a pit (Leviticus 11:36), (ε) seed (Leviticus 11:37-38). Carrying part of the carcase involves uncleanness of a higher degree than that caused by mere contact. Note the difference in the regulations of Lev 11:24-25; Leviticus 11:27-28. In Leviticus 11:26-27 the beasts are specified by their characteristics; in Leviticus 11:29-30 by their names.

Barnes' Notes on Leviticus 11:24

Unclean - If the due purification was omitted at the time, through negligence or forgetfulness, a sin-offering was required. See Leviticus 5:2.

Whedon's Commentary on Leviticus 11:24

24. Unclean until the even — The slighter degrees of uncleanness were merely “until even,” and were removed by bathing and washing the clothes at the end of it; meanwhile the person was excluded from certain religious privileges.
