Jeremiah 51:19 Summary

[This verse reminds us that the God of Israel is the Creator of all things and is vastly superior to any idol or false god. He is the one who formed and sustains all things, including the people of Israel, and His name is the LORD of Hosts, signifying His power and authority over all. As we read in Psalm 121:2, our help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth, and we can trust in His sovereignty and power. Matthew Poole's Commentary on Jeremiah 51:19

We had these five verses all in . See there the explication of the several passages in them; the scope of which is only to convince those to whom the prophet spoke, that notwithstanding all the power, and riches, and greatness, and alliances of the Chaldeans, yet that God who had threatened this ruin to them was able to bring it upon them, and all their idols were vanities, things of nought, that should not be able to protect them, and from whose power or impotency they must not measure nor make up a judgment of what God was able to do; for Israel’ s God was that God who made the world, and the Lord of all the armies of the creatures, whether in heaven or earth.

Trapp's Commentary on Jeremiah 51:19

Jeremiah 51:19 The portion of Jacob [is] not like them; for he [is] the former of all things: and [Israel is] the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts [is] his name.Ver. 19. The portion of Jacob, &c.] See Jeremiah 10:16.

Ellicott's Commentary on Jeremiah 51:19

(15-19) He hath made the earth by his power . . .—The five verses are a reproduction of Jer 10:12-16, fitted in here to enhance the majesty of Him Who decrees the destruction of Babylon, and appoints Israel to be the instrument of that destruction. The word “Israel,” as the italics show, is wanting in the Hebrew, and we have a sufficient sense without it. “He is the former of all things, and of the rod (i.e., the tribe) of his inheritance.” The English version follows the Vulgate and the Targum in treating the omission as an error of transcription.
