Jeremiah 5:22
Jeremiah 5:22 in Multiple Translations
Do you not fear Me?” declares the LORD. “Do you not tremble before Me, the One who set the sand as the boundary for the sea, an enduring barrier it cannot cross? The waves surge, but they cannot prevail. They roar but cannot cross it.
Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
Fear ye not me? saith Jehovah: will ye not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it.
Have you no fear of me? says the Lord; will you not be shaking with fear before me, who have put the sand as a limit for the sea, by an eternal order, so that it may not go past it? and though it is ever in motion, it is not able to have its way; though the sound of its waves is loud, they are not able to go past it.
Aren't you afraid of what I can do? declares the Lord. Don't you think you should tremble in my presence? I am the one who set up the shore as the sea's boundary, an everlasting limit that it can't cross. The waves crash against it, but they can't defeat it. They roar, but they can't cross the barrier.
Feare ye not me, saith the Lord? or will ye not be afraide at my presence, which haue placed the sand for the bounds of the sea by the perpetuall decree that it cannot passe it, and though the waues thereof rage, yet can they not preuaile, though they roare, yet can they not passe ouer it?
Me do ye not fear, an affirmation of Jehovah? From My presence are ye not pained? Who hath made sand the border of the sea, A limit age-during, and it passeth not over it, They shake themselves, and they are not able, Yea, sounded have its billows, and they pass not over.
Don’t you fear me?’ says the LORD; ‘Won’t you tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it can’t pass it? Though its waves toss themselves, yet they can’t prevail. Though they roar, they still can’t pass over it.’
Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though its waves toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
Will not you then fear me, saith the Lord: and will you not repent at my presence? I have set the sand a bound for the sea, an everlasting ordinance, which it shall not pass over: and the waves thereof shall toss themselves, and shall not prevail: they shall swell, and shall not pass over it.
Why do you not revere me [RHQ]? You should [RHQ] tremble when you are in my presence! I, Yahweh, am the one who put a barrier along the shores so that the waters of the ocean cannot cross it and flood the land. The waves roll and roar, but they cannot go past that barrier.

23But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts. They have turned aside and gone away. 24They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives the rains, both autumn and spring, in season, who keeps for us the appointed weeks of harvest.’Cross References

Jeremiah 5:22 Summary
This verse is about respecting and being in awe of God's incredible power. Just like the ocean has boundaries it cannot cross, God has boundaries for our lives that are for our good. When we respect these boundaries, we show that we fear and reverence Him, much like the concept in Proverbs 1:7 where the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. By recognizing God's authority and control over creation, we can begin to understand His love and care for us, as seen in Psalm 103:13, where it says God is like a father to us.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to fear the Lord in Jeremiah 5:22?
To fear the Lord means to have a deep reverence and respect for God's power and authority, recognizing His sovereignty over all creation, as seen in Psalm 33:8-9, where it says to fear the Lord and stand in awe of Him.
Why does God mention the sea and its boundaries in this verse?
God mentions the sea and its boundaries to illustrate His power and control over creation, emphasizing that just as the sea has its limits, so too should humanity recognize and respect God's boundaries and authority, as also seen in Job 38:8-11 where God speaks of setting boundaries for the sea.
How does this verse relate to the preceding verses, especially Jeremiah 5:21?
This verse is a direct response to the foolishness and senselessness of the people mentioned in Jeremiah 5:21, who despite having eyes and ears, do not see or hear the truth, and thus, God questions their lack of fear and reverence for Him.
What is the significance of the enduring barrier that the sea cannot cross?
The enduring barrier signifies God's unchanging and eternal nature, emphasizing that His decrees and laws are unalterable, much like the laws of nature that govern the sea, as supported by Malachi 3:6 where God says He does not change.
Reflection Questions
- How does recognizing God's power over creation, such as setting the boundaries of the sea, impact my personal reverence and fear of Him?
- In what ways can I apply the concept of respecting God's boundaries in my own life, just as the sea respects its boundaries?
- What are some areas in my life where I may be disregarding God's authority and boundaries, and how can I begin to realign myself with His will?
- How can I cultivate a deeper sense of awe and reverence for God, especially when considering His sovereignty over all creation?
