Therefore, thus said Jehovah, God of Hosts, Because of your speaking this word, Lo, I am making My words in thy mouth become fire, And this people wood, and it hath devoured them.
Therefore the LORD, the God of Armies says, “Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it will devour them.

Jeremiah 5:14 Summary
This verse means that God is going to use His words to judge and purify the people who have been disobedient to Him. He promises to make His words powerful and effective, like a fire that consumes everything in its path (as seen in Jeremiah 23:29). This is a reminder that God's word is not just a gentle suggestion, but a powerful force that can bring about real change in our lives (as seen in Hebrews 4:12). By surrendering to God's word and allowing it to shape our thoughts and actions, we can experience His love and redemption, rather than His judgment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for God's words to be 'a fire in your mouth'?
This phrase means that God's words will have a powerful and transformative impact, as seen in Jeremiah 23:29, where the word of God is compared to a fire that burns away evil and purifies the heart.
Why does God say He will make the people 'the wood it consumes'?
This is a metaphor for judgment, where the people's disobedience and rebellion against God will lead to their own destruction, as warned in Deuteronomy 32:22 and Isaiah 1:31.
Is this verse talking about the prophet Jeremiah or someone else?
The context suggests that God is speaking to the false prophets who have been lying about Him, as mentioned in Jeremiah 5:13, and promising to use His true prophet to bring judgment upon them.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the book of Jeremiah?
This verse is part of a larger theme in Jeremiah, where God calls out the people of Israel for their sin and rebellion, and promises to bring judgment upon them if they do not repent, as seen in Jeremiah 18:1-10 and Jeremiah 25:1-14.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I have spoken or acted in disobedience to God's word, and how can I repent and turn back to Him?
- How can I be a vessel for God's word to be a 'fire' in my mouth, and what does that look like in my everyday life?
- What are some areas in my life where I need to surrender to God's judgment and purification, and how can I trust in His goodness and love?
- How can I be mindful of the words I speak, and ensure that they are aligned with God's truth and wisdom, rather than my own opinions or desires?
