Jeremiah 48:22 Summary

Jeremiah 48:22 is a verse that talks about God's judgment on the cities of Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim, which were part of the land of Moab. This judgment was a result of Moab's sins, including its idolatry and rebellion against God (as seen in Jeremiah 48:7 and Numbers 25:1-3). Just like Moab, we all need to be careful not to rebel against God or follow after false idols, and instead seek to follow Him and obey His commands, as seen in Deuteronomy 6:5 and Matthew 22:37-40. By reading verses like Jeremiah 48:22, we can learn more about God's character and how He wants us to live, and we can be encouraged to seek His mercy and forgiveness when we sin, as seen in Psalm 51:1-19 and 1 John 1:8-9.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the cities mentioned in Jeremiah 48:22?

The cities of Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim were important locations in the region of Moab, and their mention here emphasizes the widespread judgment that God is bringing upon the land, as seen in Jeremiah 48:20-24 and Isaiah 15:1-9.

Why is God judging Moab in Jeremiah 48:22?

God is judging Moab for its sins, including its idolatry and rebellion against Him, as seen in Jeremiah 48:7 and Numbers 25:1-3, and also for its mistreatment of God's people, as seen in Jeremiah 27:3 and Deuteronomy 23:3-6.

How does Jeremiah 48:22 relate to the rest of the chapter?

Jeremiah 48:22 is part of a larger section of Jeremiah 48 that prophesies the judgment of Moab, with verses 20-24 specifically listing the cities that will be affected, and verses 25-46 describing the nature of the judgment and the reasons for it, as seen in Jeremiah 48:25-30 and Ezekiel 25:8-11.

What can we learn from the judgment of Moab in Jeremiah 48:22?

The judgment of Moab in Jeremiah 48:22 teaches us about the importance of repentance and obedience to God, as seen in Jeremiah 7:3-7 and 2 Chronicles 7:14, and also about the sovereignty and justice of God, as seen in Psalm 96:10 and Romans 11:22.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways that I can apply the lesson of God's judgment on Moab to my own life, and how can I avoid similar sins and consequences?
  2. How can I balance the idea of God's judgment with the idea of His love and mercy, as seen in Jeremiah 48:22 and other verses like John 3:16 and Romans 5:8?
  3. What are some ways that I can pray for those who are facing judgment or hardship, and how can I be a source of comfort and hope to them, as seen in Jeremiah 29:11-14 and 2 Corinthians 1:3-4?
  4. How can I use the example of Moab's judgment to warn others about the dangers of sin and the importance of repentance, as seen in Ezekiel 3:17-21 and 2 Timothy 4:2?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Jeremiah 48:22

And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Beth-diblatha'im, Bethdiblathaim - the house of Diblathaim . Not far from mount Nebo (Numbers 33:46-47).

Trapp's Commentary on Jeremiah 48:22

Jeremiah 48:22 And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Bethdiblathaim,Ver. 22. And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo.] These cities beyond Jordan belonged to Israel; but Moab had seized them, and now God’ s judgment cometh upon them.

Ellicott's Commentary on Jeremiah 48:22

(22) Beth-diblathaim.—The name signifies “the house of the double cake of figs,” and was, probably, applied to one of the more fertile districts of the Moabite country. In Numbers 33:46-47, the name Almon-diblathaim appears as one of the stations of the Israelites between Dibon and “the mountains of Abarim before Nebo,” and the conjunction of the names implies its identity with the place here mentioned. For Dibon and Nebo, see Notes on Jeremiah 48:1; Jeremiah 48:18.

Cambridge Bible on Jeremiah 48:22

22. Dibon] See on Jeremiah 48:18. Nebo] See on Jeremiah 48:1. Beth-diblathaim] lit. house of two figs. Some identify it with Almondiblathaim of Num 33:46, but this is doubtful.

Barnes' Notes on Jeremiah 48:22

Beth-diblathaim - i. e., “the house of the two cakes of figs,” perhaps so called from two hills in its neighborhood. Hosea 1:3 note.
