13So Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rabsaris, Nergal-sharezer the Rabmag, and all the captains of the king of Babylon 14had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard of the guard, and they turned him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him home. Jeremiah 39:12 Summary
This verse shows that even a powerful king like Nebuchadnezzar can be used by God to protect and care for His people, like Jeremiah. Nebuchadnezzar's orders to 'look after' Jeremiah and do what he says demonstrate a respect for Jeremiah's authority as a prophet. This reminds us that God is sovereign over all nations and leaders, and He can use anyone to accomplish His will (as seen in Daniel 4:17). We can trust in God's sovereignty and care for us, just like Jeremiah was cared for by Nebuchadnezzar's captains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon give orders to protect Jeremiah?
Nebuchadnezzar recognized Jeremiah as a prophet of the one true God, and he wanted to ensure Jeremiah's safety, as seen in Jeremiah 39:12, and also in Jeremiah 40:1 where Jeremiah is freed from prison.
What does it mean to 'look after him' in this context?
To 'look after him' means to protect and care for Jeremiah, making sure he has everything he needs, much like the Lord commands us to care for one another in Galatians 6:2 and to love our neighbors as ourselves in Leviticus 19:18.
Why did Nebuchadnezzar tell his captains to 'do for him whatever he says'?
Nebuchadnezzar recognized Jeremiah's authority as a prophet, and he wanted his captains to respect and obey Jeremiah's instructions, much like the centurion in Luke 7:1-10 who recognized Jesus' authority.
How does this verse relate to God's sovereignty over all nations?
This verse shows that even a pagan king like Nebuchadnezzar can be used by God to accomplish His will, as seen in Jeremiah 25:9, where God says He will send Nebuchadnezzar to destroy Jerusalem, demonstrating God's sovereignty over all nations and leaders.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways I can 'look after' and care for others in my life, as Nebuchadnezzar was instructed to do for Jeremiah?
- How can I recognize and respect the authority of spiritual leaders in my life, as Nebuchadnezzar did with Jeremiah?
- In what ways can I trust in God's sovereignty over all nations and leaders, even when I don't understand their actions?
- How can I apply the principle of obeying those in authority over me, as Nebuchadnezzar's captains were instructed to do, to my own life and relationships?
