Context — A Prophecy against Zedekiah

4Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the LORD says concerning you: You will not die by the sword; 5you will die in peace. As spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who preceded you, so people will burn spices for you and lament, ‘Alas, O master!’ For I Myself have spoken this word, declares the LORD.”Cross References

Jeremiah 34:3 Summary
Jeremiah 34:3 is a warning from God to King Zedekiah that he will be captured by the king of Babylon and taken to Babylon, as a result of his disobedience to God's warnings, similar to the warnings given in Deuteronomy 28:68. This means that Zedekiah will have to face the king of Babylon in person and will be under his control, as seen in 2 Kings 25:5-7. Even though this is a difficult situation, God promises that Zedekiah will die in peace, as mentioned in Jeremiah 34:5, which shows that God is merciful and can provide peace even in hard times, as seen in Psalm 23:4. This verse reminds us to trust in God's sovereignty and to obey His warnings, just like the importance of obedience is emphasized in Leviticus 26:27-33 and Deuteronomy 28:15-68.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to be 'captured and delivered into his hand' in Jeremiah 34:3?
This phrase means to be taken into custody and placed under the control of the king of Babylon, as seen in Jeremiah 34:3, similar to how the Israelites were taken captive in 2 Kings 25:21, fulfilling the prophetic warnings of Deuteronomy 28:68.
Will King Zedekiah really see the king of Babylon 'eye to eye and speak with him face to face'?
Yes, this is a literal prophecy that King Zedekiah will meet the king of Babylon in person, as stated in Jeremiah 34:3, and this meeting will likely occur when Zedekiah is taken captive, as prophesied in 2 Kings 25:5-7 and Ezekiel 12:13.
How does this verse relate to the rest of Jeremiah 34?
Jeremiah 34:3 is part of a larger prophecy from God to King Zedekiah, warning him that Jerusalem will fall to the Babylonians, as stated in Jeremiah 34:2, and that Zedekiah will be taken captive, as seen in Jeremiah 34:3, but also promising that he will die in peace, as mentioned in Jeremiah 34:5.
What can we learn from King Zedekiah's situation in Jeremiah 34:3?
We can learn that disobedience to God's warnings, as seen in Jeremiah 34:3 and the surrounding context, can lead to captivity and judgment, as prophesied in Leviticus 26:27-33 and Deuteronomy 28:15-68, but also that God is merciful and can provide peace even in difficult circumstances, as seen in Jeremiah 34:5 and Psalm 23:4.
