11Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring upon them a disaster that they cannot escape. They will cry out to Me, but I will not listen to them. 12Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to which they have been burning incense, but these gods certainly will not save them in their time of disaster.Cross References

Yet that unfaithful sister Judah had no fear and prostituted herself as well. Indifferent to her own infidelity, Israel had defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees. Jeremiah 11:10 Summary
[Jeremiah 11:10 tells us that the Israelites went back to their old sinful ways, just like their ancestors did, and started worshiping other gods instead of the one true God. This broke the special promise, or covenant, that God had made with them, as seen in Deuteronomy 29:1-30:20. We can learn from their mistakes by being careful not to prioritize things above our relationship with God, and by remembering the importance of obeying His words, as Jesus taught in Matthew 22:37-40. By doing so, we can avoid the same kind of judgment and heartache that the Israelites experienced.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to 'return to the sins of their forefathers' in Jeremiah 11:10?
This phrase refers to the Israelites repeating the same mistakes and idolatrous practices of their ancestors, as seen in Exodus 32:1-6 and Deuteronomy 9:7, which led to God's judgment and disappointment.
How did the house of Israel and the house of Judah break the covenant with God?
By following other gods and refusing to obey God's words, as stated in Jeremiah 11:10, they broke the covenant that God made with their fathers, as outlined in Deuteronomy 29:1-30:20 and emphasized in Leviticus 26:1-46.
What is the significance of the 'covenant' mentioned in Jeremiah 11:10?
The covenant refers to the agreement between God and the Israelites, where God promised to be their God and they promised to obey and worship Him alone, as seen in Exodus 19:1-8 and Deuteronomy 5:1-22.
How does Jeremiah 11:10 relate to the concept of generational sin?
This verse highlights the idea that sin can be passed down from generation to generation, as children often follow in the footsteps of their parents, as seen in Exodus 34:6-7 and Numbers 14:18, emphasizing the importance of personal repentance and obedience to God.

- What does it mean for me to 'keep' the covenant that God has made with me, and how can I ensure that I am living in obedience to His words?
- How can I balance the knowledge of my own sinful tendencies with the promise of God's mercy and forgiveness, as seen in Jeremiah 11:10 and Psalm 103:8-12?
