Isaiah 61:11

Isaiah 61:11 in Multiple Translations

For as the earth brings forth its growth, and as a garden enables seed to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

For as the earth bringeth forth its bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord Jehovah will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

For as the earth puts out buds, and as the garden gives growth to the seeds which are planted in it, so the Lord will make righteousness and praise to be flowering before all the nations.

Just as the earth sends up shoots, and plants grow in a garden, so the Lord makes goodness and praise grow before all nations.

For as the earth bringeth foorth her bud, and as the garden causeth to growe that which is sowen in it: so the Lord God will cause righteousnesse to grow and praise before all the heathen.

For, as the earth bringeth forth her shoots, And as a garden causeth its sown things to shoot up, So the Lord Jehovah causeth righteousness and praise To shoot up before all the nations!

For as the earth produces its bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth her seed to shoot forth: so shall the Lord God make justice to spring forth, and praise before all the nations.

Just as seeds sown in a garden sprout from the soil and grow [DOU], Yahweh our God will cause people of all nations to act righteously, with the result that they will praise him for doing that.

1 Mark 4:26–32 Jesus also said, “The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seed on the ground. Night and day he sleeps and wakes, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he knows not how. All by itself the earth produces a crop—first the stalk, then the head, then grain that ripens within. And as soon as the grain is ripe, he swings the sickle, because the harvest has come. ” Then He asked, “To what can we compare the kingdom of God? With what parable shall we present it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds sown upon the earth. But after it is planted, it grows to be the largest of all garden plants and puts forth great branches, so that the birds of the air nest in its shade.”

Isaiah 61:11 Summary

This verse, Isaiah 61:11, is saying that just like the earth grows and develops naturally, God will cause righteousness and praise to grow and develop in our lives. This means that as we trust in Him, He will help us to live lives that are pleasing to Him and that reflect His goodness (as seen in Psalm 37:3-4). As we seek to live for Him, we will be a witness to the world of His love and character, and He will bring forth righteousness and praise in our lives, just like a garden brings forth beautiful flowers (similar to what is described in Song of Solomon 4:16). By trusting in God's power and seeking to live for Him, we can experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from living a life that is pleasing to Him (as described in Psalm 16:11).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for the earth to 'bring forth its growth' in this verse?

This phrase is referring to the natural process of growth and development that occurs in the earth, as seen in Isaiah 61:11, similar to what is described in Psalm 104:14, where God gives vegetation to the earth to bring forth food for humans and animals.

How does a garden enable seed to 'spring up'?

A garden provides the necessary conditions for seeds to germinate and grow, much like how God provides the right environment for righteousness and praise to flourish in our lives, as mentioned in Isaiah 61:11, and also in Isaiah 58:11, where God promises to guide and satisfy those who serve Him.

What is the significance of 'righteousness and praise' springing up before all nations?

The idea is that God's people will be a witness to the world of His righteousness and goodness, as seen in Isaiah 61:11, similar to what is described in Matthew 5:16, where believers are called to let their light shine before others, so that they may see their good deeds and glorify God.

How can I apply this verse to my own life?

By trusting in God's power to bring forth righteousness and praise in your life, just as the earth brings forth growth, as mentioned in Isaiah 61:11, and seeking to live a life that reflects His goodness and character, as described in Galatians 5:22-23, where the fruit of the Spirit is listed.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways that I can cultivate a 'garden' in my own life, where righteousness and praise can spring up?

  5. How can I trust in God's power to bring forth growth and development in my life, even when I don't see it happening?

Gill's Exposition on Isaiah 61:11

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Isaiah 61:11

For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Isaiah 61:11

As the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth: by this and the other metaphor he shows not only the reviving of the blessings of the church after they had been as it were dead in the winter of affliction, but the great plenty and abundance of blessings that should break forth; that which had been as a wilderness shall be as a paradise, pointing at the effects of his grace and bounty. So the Lord God will cause righteousness to spring forth, i.e. his great work of salvation shall break out and appear. And praise, as the natural product and fruit of it; his own glory being the principal end of making his righteousness to appear and manifest itself. Before all nations: these things will not be done in a corner, but will be eminently conspicuous in the sight of all the world, for which purpose those hymns penned by the godly will ever be famous in the churches of Christ to all ages, as of Moses, Hannah, Mary, Zacharias, Simeon, &c.

Trapp's Commentary on Isaiah 61:11

Isaiah 61:11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.Ver. 11. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud.] Hic rursum loquitur Christus, saith Piscator: here Christ speaketh again, giving us to understand that piety is planted by God in the hearts of his people. We are God’ s husbandry, saith the apostle; see Mark 3:26-28. The Church is Christ’ s garden. Howbeit it is with holy affections as with exotic noble plants; this country is not so kindly for them, being but a stepmother to them; therefore must they be much watered and cherished, &c. We have a gracious promise that our hearts shall be like watered gardens, and that if we quench not the Spirit, but quicken and cherish it, there shall flow out of our belly, that is, out of the bosom and bottom of our souls shall flow rivers of living water, better than those that watered the garden of Eden; so that we shall be filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ unto the glory and praise of God.

Ellicott's Commentary on Isaiah 61:11

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Isaiah 61:11

Verse 11. The Lord God - "The Lord JEHOVAH"] "אדני Adonai, the Lord, makes the line longer than the preceding and following; and the Septuagint, Alexandrian, (and MSS. Pachom. and I. D.
