Isaiah 30:14

Isaiah 30:14 in Multiple Translations

It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar, shattered so that no fragment can be found. Not a shard will be found in the dust large enough to scoop the coals from a hearth or to skim the water from a cistern.”

And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.

And he shall break it as a potter’s vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing; so that there shall not be found among the pieces thereof a sherd wherewith to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern.

And he will let it be broken as a potter's vessel is broken: it will be smashed to bits without mercy; so that there will not be a bit in which one may take fire from the fireplace, or water from the spring.

You will be smashed like a clay pot, broken into such tiny pieces that there won't be a big enough piece to pick up coals from a hearth or a little bit of water from a well.

And the breaking thereof is like the breaking of a potters pot, which is broken without pitie, and in the breaking thereof is not found a sheard to take fire out of the hearth, or to take water out of the pit.

And He hath broken it As the breaking of the potters' bottle, Beaten down — He doth not spare, Nor is there found, in its beating down, A potsherd to take fire from the burning, And to draw out waters from a ditch.

He will break it as a potter’s vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing, so that there won’t be found among the broken pieces a piece good enough to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern.”

And he shall break it as the breaking of the potter's vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a piece to take fire from the hearth, or to take water out of the pit.

And it shall be broken small, as the potter’s vessel is broken all to pieces with mighty breaking, and there shall not a sherd be found of the pieces thereof, wherein a little fire may be carried from the hearth, or a, little water be drawn out of the pit.

You will be smashed like a clay jar is smashed when it is dropped, and it shatters completely, with the result that there is not one piece big enough to carry some coals from a stove or to carry a little bit of water from a well.”

Isaiah 30:14 Summary

[Isaiah 30:14 is saying that when we reject God's message and try to do things our own way, it can lead to complete and utter destruction, like a potter's jar being shattered into pieces. This is a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to and obeying God's voice, as seen in verses like Deuteronomy 28:1-2, where blessings are promised for obedience, and Jeremiah 7:23, which emphasizes the need to listen to God's commands. By trusting in God and following His ways, we can avoid the kind of destruction mentioned in this verse and instead find strength and confidence in Him, as promised in Isaiah 30:15.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the broken potter's jar in Isaiah 30:14 represent?

The broken potter's jar in Isaiah 30:14 represents the complete destruction and hopelessness that will result from rejecting God's message, as seen in the context of Isaiah 30:12-13, where the people's iniquity is compared to a breach about to fail, similar to the warnings in Proverbs 29:1.

Why is it significant that not a shard will be found to scoop coals or skim water?

The fact that not a shard will be found to scoop coals or skim water from a cistern emphasizes the thorough and complete nature of the destruction, leaving nothing useful or redeemable, much like the desolation described in Jeremiah 25:11.

How does this verse relate to the concept of judgment in the Bible?

Isaiah 30:14 illustrates the severe judgment that God will bring upon those who reject His message, as also seen in Revelation 20:12-15, where all will be judged according to their deeds, and in Romans 2:5, which speaks of the day of God's wrath.

What is the significance of the image of shattering like a potter's jar in the Bible?

The image of shattering like a potter's jar is used in several places in the Bible, such as Psalm 2:9 and Revelation 2:27, to symbolize God's sovereign power and judgment over nations and individuals who oppose Him, highlighting His role as the Potter and humans as the clay, as mentioned in Isaiah 64:8 and Jeremiah 18:6.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are the ways in which I may be rejecting God's message in my life, and what are the potential consequences of this rejection?
  2. How can I apply the principle of repentance and rest, as mentioned in Isaiah 30:15, to my life, especially in times of uncertainty or trouble?
  3. In what ways do I try to rely on my own strength or methods, like the people in Isaiah 30:16 who say 'we will flee on horses', instead of trusting in God's power and promises?
  4. What does this verse teach me about the importance of listening to and obeying God's voice, and how can I cultivate a greater sensitivity to His leading in my life?
