Genesis 17:22 Summary

Genesis 17:22 tells us that after God finished speaking with Abraham, He went up from him, indicating the end of their conversation at that time. This verse shows us that God communicates with people and then gives them the responsibility to respond. Just like Abraham, we should listen to God's voice and obey His instructions, as seen in verses like John 10:27 where Jesus says, 'My sheep listen to my voice.' We can learn from Abraham's example by being attentive to God's Word and responding in faith, just as Abraham did when he circumcised himself and the males of his household in obedience to God's command.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean that God 'went up from' Abraham in Genesis 17:22?

This phrase indicates that God's visible presence or manifestation to Abraham ceased, and He withdrew from the physical location where they were speaking, much like in Genesis 35:13 where 'God went up from him' after speaking with Jacob.

Is this the last time God speaks to Abraham in the book of Genesis?

No, God speaks to Abraham again in Genesis 18:1-33 and Genesis 22:1-19, demonstrating His ongoing relationship and communication with Abraham.

What is the significance of God finishing speaking with Abraham before departing?

This emphasizes that God had completed His intended communication with Abraham at that time, and Abraham was now responsible to respond in obedience, as seen in his immediate action to circumcise himself and the males of his household in Genesis 17:23-27.

How does this interaction between God and Abraham relate to our own walk with God?

This verse reminds us that our conversations with God, whether through prayer or His Word, are significant and require our attentive response, just as Abraham responded to God's instructions, as encouraged in James 1:22-25.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are the ways in which God speaks to me, and how can I be more attentive to His voice?
  2. How do I respond when God gives me instructions or guidance, and what can I learn from Abraham's example in this verse?
  3. In what ways can I create space in my life to hear from God and have a deeper conversation with Him, like Abraham did in Genesis 17?
  4. What are some areas in my life where I need to respond in obedience to God's Word, just as Abraham did in Genesis 17:23-27?

Trapp's Commentary on Genesis 17:22

Genesis 17:22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.Ver. 22. And he left off talking with him.] As man with his friend. Such honour have all his saints. Oh, speak it when I am gone, and preach it at my funeral, God dealeth familiarly with man, said that heavenly spark, now ready to be extinct St Paul calls prayer εντευξιν, an entreparlance with God, and επερωτημα, the confident interrogatory or rejoinder of a good conscience toward God. The Persian monarchs held it a piece of their silly glory to keep themselves from their greatest subjects. And Jupiter’ s image at Crete was made without ears. Plutarch gives the reason, Non enim convenit audiri ab eo quenquam, qui omnium rerum sit Dominus atqui princeps . A pretty plea for Baal! He is too great to talk with men. Our God thinks not himself so. He solicits suitors, and loves to be, interchangcably, solicited by them. Mr. John Holland, B.D. See my True Treas., p. 373.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Genesis 17:22

Verse 22. God went up from Abraham.] Ascended evidently before him, so that he had the fullest proof that it was no human being, no earthly angel or messenger, that talked with him; and the promise of a son in the course of a single year, at this set time in the next year, Genesis 17:21, which had every human probability against it, was to be the sure token of the truth of all that had hitherto taken place, and the proof that all that was farther promised should be fulfilled in its due time. Was it not in nearly the same way in which the Lord went up from Abraham, that Jesus Christ ascended to heaven in the presence of his disciples? Lu 24:51.

Cambridge Bible on Genesis 17:22

22. God went up] This expression, which occurs also in Genesis 35:13 (P), means that God returned to His dwelling-place, which the Israelite believed to be above the Heavens.

Whedon's Commentary on Genesis 17:22

22. God went up from Abraham — These words imply some open epiphany. Probably the Angel of the Lord appearing and ascending, as in the case of Manoah. Judges 13:20.
