| 1 | Ezekiel 5:11 | Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, because you have defiled My sanctuary with all your detestable idols and abominations, I Myself will withdraw My favor; I will not look upon you with pity, nor will I spare you. |
| 2 | Ezekiel 8:3–16 | He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and carried me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the idol that provokes jealousy was seated. And there I saw the glory of the God of Israel, like the vision I had seen in the plain. “Son of man,” He said to me, “now lift up your eyes to the north.” So I lifted up my eyes to the north, and in the entrance north of the Altar Gate I saw this idol of jealousy. “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what they are doing—the great abominations that the house of Israel is committing—to drive Me far from My sanctuary? Yet you will see even greater abominations.” Then He brought me to the entrance to the court, and I looked and saw a hole in the wall. “Son of man,” He told me, “dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall and discovered a doorway. Then He said to me, “Go in and see the wicked abominations they are committing here.” So I went in and looked, and engraved all around the wall was every kind of crawling creature and detestable beast, along with all the idols of the house of Israel. Before them stood seventy elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan standing among them. Each had a censer in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising. “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? For they are saying, ‘The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.’” Again, He told me, “You will see them committing even greater abominations.” Then He brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the LORD, and I saw women sitting there, weeping for Tammuz. “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see this? Yet you will see even greater abominations than these.” So He brought me to the inner court of the house of the LORD, and there at the entrance to the temple of the LORD, between the portico and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of the LORD and their faces toward the east; and they were bowing to the east in worship of the sun. |
| 3 | 2 Chronicles 33:7 | Manasseh even took the carved image he had made and set it up in the house of God, of which God had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will establish My Name forever. |
| 4 | 2 Chronicles 33:4 | Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “My Name will remain in Jerusalem forever.” |
| 5 | Ezekiel 23:39 | On the very day they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered My sanctuary to profane it. Yes, they did this inside My house. |
| 6 | Ezekiel 44:7 | In addition to all your other abominations, you brought in foreigners uncircumcised in both heart and flesh to occupy My sanctuary; you defiled My temple when you offered My food—the fat and the blood; you broke My covenant. |
| 7 | 2 Kings 21:4–7 | Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “In Jerusalem I will put My Name.” In both courtyards of the house of the LORD, he built altars to all the host of heaven. He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger. Manasseh even took the carved Asherah pole he had made and set it up in the temple, of which the LORD had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will establish My Name forever. |
| 8 | 2 Kings 16:14–15 | He also took the bronze altar that stood before the LORD from the front of the temple (between the new altar and the house of the LORD) and he put it on the north side of the new altar. Then King Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, “Offer on the great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king’s burnt offering and grain offering, as well as the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings of all the people of the land. Sprinkle on the altar all the blood of the burnt offerings and sacrifices. But I will use the bronze altar to seek guidance.” |
| 9 | 2 Kings 23:11–12 | And he removed from the entrance to the house of the LORD the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court near the chamber of an official named Nathan-melech. And Josiah burned up the chariots of the sun. He pulled down the altars that the kings of Judah had set up on the roof near the upper chamber of Ahaz, and the altars that Manasseh had set up in the two courtyards of the house of the LORD. The king pulverized them there and threw their dust into the Kidron Valley. |
Ezekiel 43:8 Summary
This verse, Ezekiel 43:8, teaches us that our actions have consequences and that God takes our disobedience seriously. When we engage in sinful practices, we defile God's holy name and risk incurring His anger, as seen in Deuteronomy 28:15-68. However, God is a loving and merciful God, and He desires to dwell among us forever, as promised in Ezekiel 43:7. By recognizing the seriousness of our sin and turning away from it, we can honor God's holy name and experience His presence in our lives, as taught in Psalm 51:7-12.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to defile God's holy name?
To defile God's holy name means to profane or desecrate it by our actions, as seen in Ezekiel 43:8, which is a serious offense against God, as stated in Leviticus 18:21 and Jeremiah 34:16.
Why did God consume them in His anger?
God consumed them in His anger because of their persistent disobedience and idolatrous practices, as mentioned in Ezekiel 43:8, which is consistent with His character as a holy and just God, as seen in Deuteronomy 32:4 and Psalm 89:14.
What is the significance of the threshold and doorposts in this verse?
The threshold and doorposts represent the close proximity of the people's idolatrous practices to God's holy presence, as described in Ezekiel 43:8, highlighting the seriousness of their sin and the need for separation from such practices, as taught in 2 Corinthians 6:17.
How can we apply this verse to our lives today?
We can apply this verse by recognizing the importance of living a life that honors God's holy name, as commanded in Leviticus 20:26, and being mindful of the company we keep and the practices we engage in, lest we defile God's name and incur His anger, as warned in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.
