Context — The LORD Calls Samuel
12On that day I will carry out against Eli everything I have spoken about his house, from beginning to end.
13I told him that I would judge his house forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons blasphemed God and he did not restrain them. 14Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, ‘The iniquity of Eli’s house shall never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”Cross References

| 1 | 1 Samuel 2:27–36 | Then a man of God came to Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house? And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the offerings of the Israelites made by fire. Why then do you kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’ Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained. Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no older man will be left in your house. You will see distress in My dwelling place. Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age. And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, your eyes will fail and your heart will grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men. And this sign shall come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas: They will both die on the same day. Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build for him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed one for all time. And everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a morsel of bread, pleading, “Please appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’” |

1 Samuel 3:12 Summary
[This verse means that God will fulfill all His warnings and judgments against Eli's family, because of their disobedience and disrespect for Him, as seen in 1 Samuel 2:30-31. God is a God of justice and righteousness, and He will not tolerate sin, as stated in Deuteronomy 32:4. This teaches us the importance of obeying God and honoring Him above all else, as we see in Exodus 20:3-6. By studying this verse, we can learn to reverence God and prioritize His will in our lives.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that God will carry out everything He has spoken about Eli's family?
This means that God will bring judgment on Eli's family, fulfilling the warnings and promises He had previously made, as seen in 1 Samuel 2:30-31, where God says He will judge Eli's house because of his sons' wickedness and his own failure to restrain them.
Why is God judging Eli's family so severely?
God is judging Eli's family because of their blatant disobedience and disrespect for Him, as Eli's sons blasphemed God and Eli failed to stop them, as mentioned in 1 Samuel 3:13, and also because Eli honored his sons above God, as stated in 1 Samuel 2:29.
What does 'from beginning to end' mean in this context?
This phrase means that God will fulfill all the judgments and punishments He has spoken concerning Eli's family, from the first warning to the final consequence, leaving no part of the judgment unfulfilled, as God is a God of justice and righteousness, as seen in Deuteronomy 32:4.
How does this verse relate to the concept of generational sin?
This verse illustrates the biblical concept of generational sin, where the sins of the parents can affect their children, as seen in Exodus 34:7, where God says He will punish the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation, highlighting the importance of repentance and obedience to break sinful patterns.
