Context — The Execution of Adonijah
27So Solomon banished Abiathar from the priesthood of the LORD and thus fulfilled the word that the LORD had spoken at Shiloh against the house of Eli.
28When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah but not with Absalom, he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar. 29It was reported to King Solomon: “Joab has fled to the tent of the LORD and is now beside the altar.” So Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, strike him down!”Cross References

| 1 | 1 Samuel 2:27–36 | Then a man of God came to Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house? And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the offerings of the Israelites made by fire. Why then do you kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’ Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained. Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no older man will be left in your house. You will see distress in My dwelling place. Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age. And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, your eyes will fail and your heart will grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men. And this sign shall come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas: They will both die on the same day. Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build for him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed one for all time. And everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a morsel of bread, pleading, “Please appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’” |

Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, ‘The iniquity of Eli’s house shall never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’” |

1 Kings 2:27 Summary
This verse tells us that Solomon removed Abiathar from being a priest because he had supported the wrong person to be king. The Lord had already said that this would happen to Abiathar's family, as we read in 1 Samuel 2:31. Solomon was following the Lord's will and making sure that the right people were in the right places in his kingdom (see Proverbs 22:17-21). This reminds us to always try to do what the Lord wants us to do, and to trust in His plan for our lives, just as we see in Jeremiah 29:11.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Solomon banish Abiathar from the priesthood of the Lord?
Solomon banished Abiathar because he had supported Adonijah's claim to the throne, and the Lord had already spoken against the house of Eli at Shiloh, as recorded in 1 Samuel 2:31 and 3:12-14. This fulfillment of prophecy was necessary to establish Solomon's authority and purity in his kingdom.
What was the significance of Abiathar carrying the ark of the Lord before David?
Abiathar's role in carrying the ark of the Lord before David was a significant one, as it symbolized his loyalty and dedication to the Lord and to David's leadership, as seen in 1 Samuel 22:20 and 23:6. However, his later actions led to his removal from the priesthood.
How does this event relate to the larger story of the Bible?
The banishment of Abiathar from the priesthood is a reminder of the importance of faithfulness and obedience to the Lord, as emphasized in Deuteronomy 28:1-2 and Hebrews 3:12. It also highlights the consequences of disobedience and the fulfillment of prophecy in the Bible.
What can we learn from Solomon's actions in this verse?
Solomon's actions demonstrate his commitment to following the Lord's will and establishing his authority as king, as seen in Proverbs 22:17-21 and 1 Kings 3:3. We can learn from his example the importance of seeking the Lord's guidance and obeying His commands in our own lives.

- In what ways can I seek the Lord's guidance and obey His commands in my daily life, just as Solomon did in this verse?
