1 Chronicles 27:22 Summary

This verse, 1 Chronicles 27:22, tells us about a man named Azarel who was a leader over the tribe of Dan in Israel. He was one of the leaders appointed by King David to help govern the nation, as seen in 1 Chronicles 27:16-22. This shows us that God values organization and leadership, and that He wants His people to be led by wise and faithful leaders, just like Moses and the leaders of Israel in Exodus 18:13-27. By looking at Azarel's example, we can learn about the importance of humble service and leadership, and how we can apply these principles in our own lives, following the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 20:26-28.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 27:22

Of the most of the tribes, not of all; for Gad is omitted, probably because that tribe was joined with the Reubenites under one prince; and Asher, for some such reason, or for some other causes now unknown, and not worth our inquiry.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 27:22

(22) Of Dan.—Dan and Zebulun, omitted in the tribal registers of 1 Chronicles 4-7, are both mentioned in the present list. On the other hand, Gad and Asher are unnoticed here; why, we cannot say. The total—“twelve”—is made by counting Manasseh as two and Joseph as three tribes. The order of the first six names is that of Gen 35:23. Why Dan is mentioned last is not clear: some have thought it indicates the chronicler’s reprobation of the idolatry of the tribe (1 Kings 12:29-30; comp. Judges 18:30; Amos 8:14); but he has probably kept the order of his source. These were the princes.—The same word as “captains” in the former list (sârîm).

Whedon's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 27:22

THE PRINCES OF THE TRIBES, 16-22.These princes or rulers were probably the oldest representatives of their several tribes; “the eldest lineal descendants of the patriarchs according to the law of primogeniture.” — Rawlinson.
