We have cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people for the donation of wood by our families at the appointed times each year. They are to bring it to the house of our God to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the Law.

1 Chronicles 26:27 Summary

This verse shows that the Israelites used some of the things they had taken in battle to fix and take care of the house of the LORD. This was a way for them to honor God and say thank you for all He had done for them, similar to what we read in Psalm 100:4-5. It reminds us that everything we have belongs to God, and we should use some of what we have to help others and to build up God's kingdom, as seen in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7. By doing so, we can show our love and gratitude to God, just like the Israelites did.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 26:27

Heb. to strengthen it; either to make that building strong and substantial by these and other charges; or rather, to repair it when it should be built; for which they might the rather take particular care, because it was likely that every one would contribute to the building of the temple, and there would be no want for that use; but few would provide for the repairs of it, when by the injury of men or time it should receive any damage.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 26:27

(27) Out of the spoils won in battles.—The verse is an explanatory parenthesis. Literally, Out of the wars, and out of the spoils; a hendiadys, i.e., out of the spoils of war.To maintain the house.—In 2 Kings 12:8 the verb means to repair or restore. (Comp. Nehemiah 3:4; Nehemiah 3:7.) Here to make strong appears to be the idea. (Comp. 1 Chronicles 29:12.)

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 26:27

Verse 27. The spoils won in battles did they dedicate] It seems these were intended for its repairs. This custom prevailed amongst almost all the people of the earth. All who acknowledged any supreme Being, believed that victory could only come through him; and therefore thought it quite rational to give him a share of the spoils. Proofs of this exist in all ancient histories: thus Virgil: - Irruimus ferro, et divos, ipsumque vocamus In partem praedamque Jovem. AEN. iii., ver. 222. "With weapons we the welcome prey invade: Then call the gods for partners of our feast, And Jove himself, the chief invited guest." DRYDEN. On this passage Servius observes: Ipsum vocamus. "Jupiter himself, the king of the gods, to whom a portion of the prey was due: for it was a custom among the Romans, when entering on a war, to promise some part of the prey to their deities. And there was a temple at Rome dedicated to JUPITER PRAEDATOR, not because he presided over the prey, but because a part of the prey was due to him."

Cambridge Bible on 1 Chronicles 26:27

27. to maintain] R.V. to repair (the same Heb. word as in 2 Chronicles 24:5; 2 Chronicles 29:3).
