Psalms 109
BSA1 O [the one I worship, supreme] God [Elohim, the one supreme God] of my [public, joyful] praise [song of praise, hymn], be not [do not remain, hold not] silent [quiet, still]. word study 2 For [morally wrong, guilty of sin] wicked and [dishonest, cheating] deceitful mouths [lips, speech] open [are engraved, carved] against me; they speak [communicate, utter words] against me with [accompanied by, near] lying tongues. word study 3 They surround [compass, encircle] me with hateful words [words of hatred, detestable] and attack [fight, make war] me without [for no reason, in vain] cause [justification, provocation]. word study 4 In return for my [selfless, unconditional] love [affection] they accuse [oppose, act as adversaries] me, but I [emphatically, I myself] am a man [devoted, given] of prayer [supplication]. word study 5 They repay me [with wickedness] evil [moral or natural harm, adversity] for good [beneficial or pleasing, welfare], and hatred [having hatred towards someone, intense dislike] for my love [affection, human love for others or God’s love]. word study 6 Set over him a [morally wrong, guilty of crime] wicked man; let an [adversary, Satan] accuser stand at his [position of authority, right side] right hand. word study 7 When he is tried [judged, sentenced], let him be found guilty [come forth wicked, condemned], and may his prayer [supplication, request to God] be regarded as sin [an offense, a moral wrong, a transgression against God or others]. word study 8 May his days [limited in number] be few; may another [someone else, a different person] take his position [of authority, oversight, or office]. word study 9 May his children [be left fatherless, without a father] be fatherless [orphaned, without a paternal figure] and his wife [woman, female partner] a widow [bereaved, having lost her husband]. word study 10 May his children [vagabonds, wanderers] wander as beggars [continually], seeking [to ask, to inquire] sustenance [bread, food] far from their ruined [desolate, laid waste] homes [places, houses]. word study 11 May the creditor [extortioner, one who lends at excessive interest] seize all [everything, every possession] he owns, and strangers [foreigners, those outside his community] plunder [violently take, seize by force] the fruits [results, products] of his labor [toil, hard work, effort]. word study 12 May there be no one [none at all, not a single person] to extend [to show, to offer] kindness [mercy, pity, loving actions] to him, and no one [no one at all, not anyone] to favor [to show compassion, to have pity on] his fatherless [orphaned, without a father] children [orphans, young ones without a parent]. word study 13 May his descendants [posterity, seed, family] be cut off [destroyed, wiped out]; may their name [identity, honor, character] be blotted out [erased, wiped away, forgotten] from the next [following, coming] generation [period of time, group of people]. word study 14 May the iniquity [moral evil, sin] of his fathers [ancestors, forefathers] be remembered [recalled, brought to mind] before the LORD [Yehovah], and the sin [guilt, punishment for sin] of his mother [female parent, maternal figure] never [not, under no circumstances] be blotted out [erased, wiped away]. word study 15 May their sins [ever before the Lord, continually] always remain before the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], that He may cut off [destroy, remove completely] their memory [memorial, remembrance] from the earth [land, territory]. word study 16 For he never thought [did not consider, failed to recall] to show [demonstrate, extend] kindness [mercy, pity, loving actions], but pursued [chased, harassed] the poor [afflicted, depressed, humble] and needy [weak, oppressed] and brokenhearted [disheartened, grieved], even to their death [slay, die, be killed]. word study 17 The cursing [reviling, wish for harm] that he loved [took pleasure in, delighted in], may it fall [come unto, meet] on him; the blessing [gift from God, prosperity] in which he refused [did not delight, had no time] to delight [be pleased, take pleasure], may it be [so let it be, cause it to be] far [distant, removed] from him. word study 18 The cursing [wish for harm, evil intention] that he wore [clothed himself, put on] like a coat [garment, robe], may it soak [come, enter] into his body [inward parts, entrails] like water [refreshment, liquid], and into his bones [the essence of his being] like oil [olive oil]. word study 19 May it be like a robe [garment, clothing] wrapped about him, like a belt [girdle] tied forever [continually, constantly] around him. word study 20 May this [the specified consequence, what is deserved] be the LORD’s [Yehovah, the Lord of covenant faithfulness] reward [wages, payment for labor] to my accusers [those who oppose, adversaries], to those who speak [communicate, utter] evil [bad, morally wrong] against me [toward my soul, the essence of my being]. word study 21 But You, O GOD [Yehovah], the Lord [Adonay, Master and Ruler], deal kindly [treat me well, show mercy] with me for the sake of Your name [Your reputation, character]; deliver me [rescue, save] by the goodness [faithfulness, loving-kindness] of Your loving devotion [covenant loyalty, mercy]. word study 22 For I am [deeply humbled, afflicted] poor [needy, lacking] and needy [oppressed, in need of help]; my [innermost, emotional] heart [the center of feelings, will, and intellect] is wounded [pierced, broken] within me [in my inner being, midst]. word study 23 I am fading away [disappearing, gone] like a lengthening [declining, stretched out] shadow [a dark area]; I am shaken off [tossed up and down, driven away] like a locust [a swarming insect]. word study 24 My knees [weakened, feeble] are weak from fasting [abstaining from food, spiritual discipline], and my body [flesh, physical form] grows lean [lacking fat, emaciated] and gaunt [skin and bones, severely weakened]. word study 25 I [the psalmist, David] am an object of scorn [reproach, shame, or disgrace] to my accusers [those who wrongfully accuse me]; when they see [look upon, gaze at] me, they shake [move back and forth, tremble] their heads [in contempt, disdain, or disgust]. word study 26 Help [assist, come to the aid of] me, O LORD [Yehovah] my God [Elohim, the supreme God]; save [rescue, deliver] me according to Your [merciful] loving devotion [kindness, mercy]. word study 27 Let them know [to ascertain by seeing, perceive] that this [specifically, this act] is Your [divine] hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share], that You [personally], O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], have done [made, brought about] it [this work]. word study 28 Though they [hatefully] curse [revile, speak evil], You will bless [bestow good upon, praise]. When they rise up [stand against, attack], they will be put to shame [be confounded, disgraced], but Your servant [faithful follower, slave] will rejoice [be glad, celebrate]. word study 29 May my accusers [adversaries, those who oppose me] be clothed [wrapped, covered] with disgrace [shame, dishonor]; may they wear [cover themselves with] their shame [reproach, guilt] like a robe [cloak, outer garment]. word study 30 With my mouth [lips, edge of speech] I will thank [give great thanks unto, praise] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] profusely [much, very, exceedingly]; I will praise [give praise to, celebrate] Him in the presence [midst, among] of many [a multitude, a great number of people]. word study 31 For [because of this reason] He stands [to take a strong position, to uphold] at the right hand [place of authority and power] of the needy [poor, oppressed, and destitute] one, to save [rescue, deliver, and set free] him from the condemners [those who judge and sentence] of his soul [the essence of a person, the inner being]. word study
