their soul [the essence of a person] fainted [became weak, felt discouraged] within them [inside, deep within]. word study 6 Then they cried out [in desperation, with urgent need] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] in their trouble [narrow, hard, or tight spot], and He delivered [rescued, snatched away] them from their distress [tight spot, anguish, or trouble, being distressed]. word study 7 He led them on a straight [right] path [way of life, journey] to reach a city [town] where they could live [dwell, reside]. word study 8 Let them give thanks [praise, confess] to the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] for His loving devotion [kindness, mercy, faithful love] and His wonders [amazing works, miraculous deeds] to the sons [children, descendants] of men [humanity, mankind]. word study 9 For He satisfies [to fulfill the longings of, to fill completely] the thirsty [those who are spiritually dry, seeking refreshment] and fills [to make full, to satisfy completely] the hungry [those who are empty, in need of nourishment] with good things [pleasant, beneficial, and desirable]. word study 10 Some sat [in very dark places, in Babylonia/other countries] in darkness [misery, destruction, or wickedness] and in the shadow [a place of deep distress] of death, prisoners [captive, bound or restrained] in affliction [trouble, hardship, or misery] and chains [made of iron], word study 11 because they rebelled [resisted, disobeyed] against the words [commands, promises] of God [the Most High, Almighty] and despised [spurned, scorned] the counsel [advice, plan] of the Most High [the supreme authority, heavenly Father]. word study 12 He humbled [brought low, made submissive] their hearts [the seat of feelings, will, and intellect] with hard labor [trouble, toil, and sorrow]; they stumbled [fell, lost their balance], and there was no one [none, nothing] to help [assist, support, or aid]. word study 13 Then they cried out [in desperation, with a loud voice] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] in their trouble [narrow, hard, or tight spot], and He saved [delivered, freed from danger] them from their distress [anguish, tight spot, or suffering]. word study 14 He brought them out [from a place of captivity, complete darkness] of darkness [misery, spiritual gloom] and the shadow [deep distress, the grave] of death [the grave, eternal separation] and broke away [tore, pulled apart] their chains [bonds, restraints, ropes]. word study 15 Let them give thanks [praise, confess] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] for His loving devotion [kindness, mercy, faithful love] and His wonders [amazing works, miraculous deeds] to the sons [children, descendants] of men [humanity, mankind]. word study 16 For [because of this reason] He has broken down [shattered, torn apart] the gates [doors, entrances] of bronze [copper, a base metal] and cut through [severed, sliced] the bars [bolts, iron rods] of iron [a strong, harsh metal]. word study 17 Fools [because of their transgression, stupid], in their rebellious [disobedient, sinful] ways, and through their iniquities [moral evil, sin], suffered [were afflicted, humbled] affliction [trouble, punishment]. word study 18 They loathed [abhorred, detested] all [every kind of] food [meat, sustenance, nourishment] and drew near [came close, approached] to the gates [doors, entrances] of death [the end of life, mortal extinction]. word study 19 Then they cried out [to call for help, send up a cry] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] in their trouble [narrow, hard, or tight spot, adversity], and He saved [to deliver, rescue, or set free] them from their distress [troubles, or tight spots, being in anguish]. word study 20 He sent forth [dispatched, commanded] His word [divine message, declaration] and healed [restored, mended] them; their courage [soul, inner being] melted [softened, dissolved] in their anguish [trouble, adversity, distress]. word study 27 They reeled [to and fro, stumbling] and staggered [like a drunken man, at their wits’ end] like drunkards [intoxicated, without control], and all [everything, every aspect of] their skill [wisdom, cunning, seamanship] was useless [swallowed up, without effect, at their wit’s end]. word study 28 Then they cried out [in desperation, with urgent need] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] in their trouble [narrow, difficult circumstances, adversity], and He brought [rescued, delivered] them out of their distress [hardships, troubles, tight spots]. word study 29 He calmed [made still, stilled] the storm [tempest, whirlwind] to a whisper [silence, stillness], and the waves [heaps, surging billows] of the sea were hushed [made quiet, became still]. word study 30 They rejoiced [were glad, happy] in the silence [calm, stillness, quiet], and He guided [led, brought] them to the harbor [haven, safe place] they desired [wanted, took pleasure in]. word study 31 Let them give thanks [praise, confess] to the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] for His loving devotion [kindness, mercy, faithful love] and His wonders [amazing works, miraculous deeds] to the sons [children, descendants] of men [humanity, mankind]. word study 32 Let them exalt [highly praise, glorify] Him in the assembly [congregation, gathering] of the people [nation, community] and praise [celebrate, shine forth] Him in the council [seat, gathering place] of the elders [old, wise leaders]. word study 33 He turns [dries up, makes into a wilderness] rivers [a flood] into deserts [a dry and barren land, a wilderness], springs [sources, exits] of water [a liquid, a source of refreshment] into thirsty [parched, dry] ground [a dry and barren land, a desert], word study 34 and fruitful [fertile, productive] land into fields [a salt desert, barrenness] of salt [saltiness, desolation], because of the wickedness [badness, evil] of its dwellers [those who dwell therein, inhabitants]. word study 35 He turns [makes, transforms] a desert [wilderness, barren land] into pools [standing water] of water [refreshment, source of life] and a dry [parched, barren] land [earth, territory] into flowing [gushing, abundant] springs [fountains, water sources]. word study 36 He causes the hungry [those who are famished, in need] to settle [to dwell, reside] there [in that place, location], that they may establish [set up, build] a city [a town, community] in which to dwell [to live, reside, have a seat]. word study 37 They sow [plant seeds in] fields [lands used for cultivation] and plant [establish, fix] vineyards [gardens for growing vines] that yield [produce, bring forth] a fruitful [bountiful, abundant] harvest [crop, produce]. word study 38 He blesses [praises and honors] them, and they multiply [increase and grow] greatly [exceedingly, very much];
