1 Hallelujah [praise the Lord]! Give thanks [praise, offer gratitude] to the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of all], for He is good [pleasant, beneficial]; His loving devotion [kindness, mercy] endures [lasts, remains] forever [for all eternity, always]. word study 2 Who [what person, whoever it may be] can describe [utter, express, or recount] the mighty [powerful, strong, or courageous] acts [great deeds, or marvelous works] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] or fully [completely, or utterly] proclaim [declare, or make known] His praise [a song of praise, or an act of worship]? word study 3 Blessed [happy, fortunate] are those who uphold [keep, practice] justice [righteous judgment, fairness], who practice [do, make] righteousness [virtue, morality] at [during, throughout] all [every, each] times [moments, occasions]. word study 4 Remember [to recall, mark with favor] me, O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], in Your favor [acceptance, delight] to Your people [a nation, a tribe]; visit [to oversee, reckon with] me with Your salvation [deliverance, victory], word study 5 that I may see [behold, look after] the prosperity [good, welfare] of Your chosen [select, preferred] ones, and rejoice [be glad, celebrate] in the gladness [joy, happiness] of Your nation [people, Gentiles], and give glory [praise, boast] with [together, in unity] Your inheritance [heritage, possession]. word study 6 We have sinned [with our fathers, like our ancestors] like our fathers; we have done wrong [committed iniquity, twisted from the right path] and acted wickedly [done perversely, been guilty of evil]. word study 7 Our fathers [ancestors, forefathers] in Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] did not grasp [understand, comprehend] Your wonders [miraculous works, amazing deeds] or remember [recall, keep in memory] Your abundant [great, multitude of] kindness [lovingkindnesses, mercy]; but they rebelled [were rebellious, provoked] by the sea [at the Red Sea, by the water’s edge], there at the Red Sea [the sea of Suph, the sea of reeds]. word study 8 Yet He saved [rescued, delivered] them for the sake of His name [reputation, character], to make His power [might, strength] known [clearly understood, revealed]. word study 9 He rebuked [sternly reproved] the Red Sea [of reeds, the sea of Suph], and it dried up [was desolated, became dry]; He led them through the depths [the deep waters, the abyss] as through a desert [a wilderness, a dry and barren land]. word study 10 He saved [rescued, delivered from danger] them from the hand [power, strength] that hated [felt intense dislike, was hostile] them; He redeemed [bought back, freed from bondage] them from the hand [power, control] of the enemy [adversary, one who opposes]. word study 11 The waters [liquid, source of refreshment] covered [to fill up, hide from view] their foes [adversaries, enemies, oppressors]; not [indicating absence, negation] one [single, unique] of them remained [to stay, be left behind, excel]. word study 12 Then they believed [had faith in, trusted] His promises [words, assurances] and sang [praised with music, gave thanks] His praise [a song of worship]. word study 13 Yet they soon [quickly, in a hurry] forgot [to mislay, be oblivious to] His works [deeds, actions] and failed [did not] to wait [be patient, wait patiently] for His counsel [advice, plan, purpose]. word study 14 They craved [with intense longing, lusted exceedingly] intensely in the wilderness [a desolate, empty place] and tested [tried, tempted] God [the supreme Power, ’el] in the desert [a dry, barren land, Jeshimon]. word study 15 So He granted [gave, provided, fulfilled] their request [petition, desire, longing], but sent [caused to come, brought upon] a wasting disease [leanness, thinness, weakness] upon them [into their soul, to their very being]. word study 16 In the camp [among the tents, in the Israelite encampment] they envied [became jealous of, were resentful towards] Moses, as well as [also, in addition to] Aaron [the holy priest, the brother of Moses], the holy [set apart, sacred] one of the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God]. word study 17 The earth [land, ground, or territory] opened up [to engrave or carve] and swallowed Dathan [a Reubenite chief who rebelled against Moses]; it covered [to fill up hollows, or hide from view] the assembly [congregation, or gathering] of Abiram [my father is exalted, a rebellious Israelite]. word study 18 Then fire [a flame, divine judgment] blazed through their company [congregation, gathering]; flames [a burning, consuming fire] consumed the wicked [morally wrong, sinful people, guilty of crime against God]. word study 19 At Horeb [Mount Sinai, the mountain of God’s presence] they made [formed, created] a calf [young ox, idol] and worshiped [bowed down to, gave reverence to] a molten [cast metal, liquid] image. word study 20 They exchanged [traded, replaced] their Glory [honor, splendor, divine majesty] for the image [pattern, likeness, model] of a grass-eating [herb-eating, vegetation-consuming] ox [bull, cattle, work animal]. word study 21 They forgot [had no memory of, were oblivious to] God [El, the all-powerful One] their Savior [Rescuer, Deliverer], who did [performed, accomplished] great things [marvelous works, mighty acts] in Egypt [the land of the Nile, a place of bondage], word study 22 wondrous [terrible, fearful, amazing] works [miracles, acts of wonder] in the land [country, territory, region] of Ham [a son of Noah, his descendants], and awesome [fearful, terrible, awe-inspiring] deeds [things, acts] by the Red [sea of Suph, reed-filled] Sea. word study 23 So He said He would destroy [completely annihilate, bring to an end] them— had not Moses [His chosen servant, the leader of Israel] His chosen one stood [taken a strong stance, interceded] before Him in the breach [a gap, a break in the relationship] to divert [turn away, avert] His wrath [intense anger, rage] from destroying [ruining, causing to perish] them. word study 24 They despised [rejected with contempt] the pleasant [desirable, highly valued] land; they did not believe [have faith, trust] His promise [word, covenant agreement]. word study 25 They grumbled [murmured, complained secretly] in their tents [nomadic homes, places of temporary dwelling] and did not listen [hear, obey, pay attention] to the voice [sound, spoken word] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]. word study 26 So He raised [lifted up, to swear an oath] His hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] and swore [made a solemn promise, to give a serious warning] to cast [overthrow, cause to fall] them down [to destroy, bring low] in the wilderness [a desert, a place of testing and refinement], word study 27 to disperse [overthrow, cause to fall] their offspring [seed, descendants] among the nations [Gentile peoples, non-Hebrews] and scatter [toss about, diffuse] them throughout the lands [countries, territories, regions]. word study 28 They yoked [joined, coupled] themselves to Baal [lord of the gap, a Moabite deity] of Peor [a place of idolatrous worship] and ate [devoured, consumed] sacrifices [offerings to God or idols] offered to lifeless [dead, non-living] gods [idols, false deities]. word study 29 So they provoked [to anger, stirred up] the LORD [the supreme God, Yehovah] to anger [wrath, indignation] with their deeds [actions, inventions], and a plague [divine judgment, pestilence] broke out [burst forth, forced its way] among them. word study 30 But Phinehas [stood up, took a stand] stood and intervened [executed judgment, made prayer for them], and the plague [divine judgment, pestilence] was restrained [stopped in its tracks, stayed]. word study 31 It was [reckoned, counted] credited to him as [virtue, morality] righteousness [including justice, virtue, and morality] for endless generations [a period of time, a group of people] to come [till, until, as far as]. word study 32 At the waters [source of refreshment, liquid] of Meribah [provocation, strife] they angered [be furious, intensely rage] the LORD [the supreme God, Elohim], and trouble [affliction, evil] came to Moses [the Israelite leader, lawgiver] because of them [for their sakes, on their account]. word study 33 For [because of their actions] they rebelled [resisted, disobeyed] against His Spirit [the breath of life, divine presence], and Moses spoke [uttered words, pronounced judgment] rashly [without thinking, unadvisedly] with his lips [language, words]. word study 34 They did not [refused to, failed to] destroy [annihilate, desolate] the peoples [nations, Gentiles] as the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] had commanded [spoken, instructed] them [the Israelites, His chosen people], word study 35 but they mingled [joined, mixed themselves] with the nations [Gentiles, heathen] and adopted [learned, took on] their customs [works, way of life, deeds]. word study 36 They worshiped [served, gave homage to] their idols [idolatrous images, pagan deities], which became [resulted in, led to] a snare [trap, source of destruction] to them. word study 37 They sacrificed [offered, slaughtered] their sons [descendants, children] and their daughters [female children, women] to demons [evil spirits, devils, destroyers]. word study 38 They shed [poured out, spilled] innocent [morally clean, guiltless] blood— the blood [the liquid that flows through the body] of their sons [descendants, male children] and daughters [female children, women], whom they sacrificed [offered as a religious slaughter] to the idols [idolatrous images, false gods] of Canaan [the land of the Canaanites, a region in ancient Israel], and the land [earth, territory] was polluted [defiled, corrupted] with blood [the liquid essential for life]. word study 39 They defiled [became morally foul, contaminated] themselves by their actions [deeds, works] and prostituted [committed spiritual adultery, went a whoring] themselves by their deeds [evil desires, inventions]. word study 40 So the anger [intense wrath, burning fury] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] burned [was kindled, ignited] against His people [nation, those belonging to Him], and He abhorred [detested, loathed utterly] His own inheritance [possession, heritage]. word study 41 He delivered [handed over, gave into the power of] them into the hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] of the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples], and those who hated [felt intense dislike or hostility towards] them ruled [exercised dominion, had power over] over them. word study 42 Their enemies [adversaries, those who oppose] oppressed [treated cruelly, dominated] them, and subdued [humbled, brought into subjection] them under [beneath, in subjection to] their hand [power, authority]. word study 43 Many times [on numerous occasions, repeatedly] He rescued [delivered, saved] them, but they were bent on [stubbornly committed to] rebellion [resistance, disobedience] and sank down [were brought low, humiliated] in their iniquity [moral evil, sin, wickedness]. word study 44 Nevertheless He [the Provider] heard [listened with attention and obedience] their cry [a loud, ringing shout for help]; He took note of [regarded, saw, and pitied] their distress [affliction, trouble, and narrow circumstances]. word study 45 And He remembered [kept in mind, thought about] His covenant [agreement, promise] with them, and relented [repented, was sorry] by the abundance [multitude, greatness] of His loving devotion [kindness, mercies, lovingkindnesses]. word study 46 He made them objects [to be pitied] of [tender love, womb-like] compassion [mercy, feeling sorry for] to [before the face of, in the presence of] all [every single one, everything] who [those that, the ones which] held [carried, took captive] them captive [prisoners]. word study 47 Save [rescue, deliver] us, O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] our God [Elohim, the supreme God], and gather [collect, assemble] us from the nations [Gentiles, heathen], that we may give thanks [praise, acknowledge] to Your holy [set-apart, sacred] name [identity, character], that we may glory [triumph, rejoice] in Your praise [a song of praise]. word study 48 Blessed [praised, honored] be the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], the God [Elohim, the supreme God] of Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, and his descendants], from [a portion of time, since the beginning] everlasting [forever, always] to [until, as far as] everlasting [always, forever]. Let all [every, the whole] the people [a nation, a community] say [speak, declare], “Amen [so be it, truly]!” Hallelujah [praise the LORD, celebrate]! word study
