Job 37

1 “At this [in response to this, because of this] my heart [the seat of emotions, will, and intellect] also pounds [trembles, shakes violently] and leaps [is moved, shaken off] from its place [position, location, state of being]. word study 2 Listen closely [hear attentively, give ear] to the thunder [turmoil, commotion] of His voice [sound, the noise that comes from Him] and the rumbling [moaning, sound] that comes from [goes out of, proceeds from] His mouth [lip, the edge of His speaking]. word study 3 He unleashes [sends forth, directs] His lightning [thunder-flame, light] beneath [under, underneath] the whole [all, entire] sky [heaven, the visible universe] and sends [directs, beholds] it to the ends [extremities, most distant places] of the earth [land, the material world]. word study 4 Then there comes a roaring sound [like a lion’s mighty roar]; He thunders [with powerful rumbling] with His majestic [excellent, proud] voice [the sound of His power]. He does not restrain [hold back, stay] the lightning [thunder-flames] when His voice [the sound of His majesty] resounds [is heard, sounds out]. word study 5 God [the supreme Almighty, Elohim] thunders [with a mighty, rumbling sound, like thunder] wondrously [in a marvelous, awe-inspiring way, wonderfully] with His voice [the sound of His speaking, a powerful declaration]; He does [accomplishes, brings about] great things [mighty, extraordinary works, marvelous deeds] we cannot [are unable to, do not have the capacity to] comprehend [fully understand, grasp, know]. word study 6 For [as a reason, because of this] He says [commands, speaks] to the snow [frozen crystals], ‘Fall [come down, be] on the earth [land, ground],’ and to the gentle [small, light] rain [Geshem, shower], ‘Pour out [cause to come down, bring forth] a mighty [great, powerful] downpour [heavy rain, strength of His power].’ word study 7 He seals up [shuts or locks] the hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] of every man [human being, including all people], so that all men [mankind, every person] may know [ascertain by seeing, learn, perceive] His work [deed, action, or accomplishment, including all that He has made]. word study 8 The wild [feral, untamed] animals [beasts, living creatures] enter [go into, take shelter in] their lairs [dens, coverts, hiding places]; they settle down [remain, abide, take rest] in their dens [habitations, places of dwelling]. word study 9 The tempest [whirlwind, hurricane] comes from its [inner, private] chamber [place of origin, south], and the cold [low temperature, frost] from the driving [scattering, dispersing] north winds [cold air]. word study 10 By the [divine, life-giving] breath of God [the supreme Being, Strength] the ice [frost, rock crystal] is formed and the watery expanses [wide waters, lakes/streams] are frozen [made narrow, constrained]. word study 11 He loads [fills, weights with moisture] the clouds [thick cloud, dark cloud] with moisture [water, shower of water]; He scatters [spreads abroad, disperses] His lightning [bright cloud, light] through them [the clouds, His clouds]. word study 12 They swirl about [turning round], whirling at His [divine] direction, accomplishing all [everything, whatsoever] that He commands [gives orders, appoints] over the face [presence, surface] of all [the whole] the earth [land, world]. word study 13 Whether [for correction or discipline] for punishment [a rod] or for His land [or territory, as an act of sovereignty], He accomplishes [causes to come, brings about] this in His loving devotion [kindness, mercy, or lovingkindness, reflecting His nature]. word study 14 Listen [O Job, and heed] to this, O Job [the patriarch, a man of patience]; stand [be steadfast] still and consider [reflect on, and discern] the wonders [miraculous works, amazing feats] of God [the Almighty, El, the all-powerful]. word study 15 Do you know [have knowledge or understanding of] how God [Eloah, the one true deity] dispatches [controls or commands] the clouds [the visible cloud cover] or makes [causes to shine, brings forth] the lightning [a display of God’s power] flash [to shine or send out beams of light]? word study 16 Do you understand [know, perceive, have insight into] how the clouds [dark clouds, thickets, signs of God’s presence] float [are balanced, sway], those wonders [miracles, amazing works, marvelous deeds] of Him who is perfect [unblemished, flawless] in knowledge [understanding, wisdom, discernment]? word study 17 You [whose garments are warm, how thy garments are warm] whose clothes [become warm] get hot [drip with sweat] when the land [earth, the ground] lies hushed [is still, quiet] under the south [direction south] wind, word study 18 can you, like Him [with His power and wisdom], spread out the skies [the heavens, the atmosphere] to reflect the heat [the warmth and light] like a mirror [a polished surface, a looking glass] of bronze [a strong, molten metal, as if poured out]? word study 19 Teach [inform, instruct] us what [how, in what manner] we should say [speak, declare] to Him; we cannot [are unable, it is not possible for us] draw up [arrange, set in order] our case [speech, argument] when our faces [presence, being] are in [surrounded by, enveloped in] darkness [obscurity, ignorance]. word study 20 Should He [the Almighty, God] be told [informed, notified] that I want [desire, wish] to speak [communicate, express]? Would a man [human, individual] ask [request, wish] to be swallowed up [consumed, destroyed, annihilated] ? word study 21 Now [at this time, in this moment] no one can gaze [look directly, stare] at the sun [the bright celestial body] when it is bright [shining, radiant] in the skies [the atmosphere, the heavens] after the wind [a blast of air] has swept [passed, cleared] them clean [pure, cleared of clouds]. word study 22 Out of the [northern direction, from Zaphon] north He comes in [brilliant, shining like] golden [valuable, yellow] splendor [inspiring awe, reverent]; awesome majesty [terrible, fearful] surrounds Him [as His glory, divine presence]. word study 23 The Almighty [Shadday, all-powerful] is beyond our reach; He is exalted in power [great strength, mighty]! In His justice [righteous judgment] and great [abundant, rob] righteousness [virtue, moral integrity] He does not [lo, absolutely not] oppress [afflict, humble]. word study 24 Therefore [for this cause, thus], men [people, individuals] fear [revere, stand in awe of] Him, for He is not [does not] partial [show respect, regard] to the wise [intelligent, skilled] in heart [mind, intellect, feelings].” word study
