In the face of illness, believers can find comfort and hope in the Scriptures. The apostle John expresses a desire for bodily health, as seen in his wish for Gaius to prosper and be in good health, just as his soul was prospering. However, the Bible also teaches that suffering can be a means of spiritual growth, as Romans notes that tribulation can produce perseverance and character. James instructs the elders to pray for the sick, and Isaiah points to the ultimate healing found in the suffering of Jesus, who bore our pains and sicknesses, as also highlighted in 1 Peter.

Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are healed.”
But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.
The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness and restore him from his bed of sickness.
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.
saying, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, then I will not bring on you any of the diseases I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”
So you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take away sickness from among you.
