13 Bible Verses on Employers

13 verses

Those in positions of authority over workers are called to treat them with fairness and respect, as seen in Colossians 4:1, where masters are instructed to provide their slaves with what is right and fair. The Bible also warns against exploiting or cheating workers, as James 5:4 condemns those who withhold wages from laborers. According to Colossians 3:23, employers should recognize that their workers are ultimately serving the Lord, and therefore should lead by example and create a positive work environment. Additionally, Ephesians 6:9 encourages masters to treat their slaves with respect and kindness, just as they would want to be treated by God.

Masters, supply your slaves with what is right and fair, since you know that you also have a Master in heaven.
James 5:4
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men,
Now the wages of the worker are not credited as a gift, but as an obligation.
And masters, do the same for your slaves. Give up your use of threats, because you know that He who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with Him.
Servants, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but even to those who are unreasonable. For if anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God, this is to be commended. How is it to your credit if you are beaten for doing wrong and you endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.
Oppressing the poor to enrich oneself or giving gifts to the rich will surely lead to poverty.
“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers and perjurers, against oppressors of the widowed and fatherless, and against those who defraud laborers of their wages and deny justice to the foreigner but do not fear Me,” says the LORD of Hosts.
You must not defraud your neighbor or rob him. You must not withhold until morning the wages due a hired hand.
“Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms without justice, who makes his countrymen serve without pay, and fails to pay their wages,
Do not oppress a hired hand who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.
For the Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.”
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, not only to please them while they are watching, but with sincerity of heart and fear of the Lord.
