Weariness
Weariness in the Bible often denotes a state of physical, emotional, or spiritual exhaustion and is frequently associated with labor, trials, and the burdens of life. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for weariness is often linked to the concept of labor and toil. For instance, in Ecclesiastes 1:8, it states, "All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it," emphasizing the relentless nature of human endeavor and the exhaustion that accompanies it. Similarly, in Isaiah 40:29, God promises to give "power to the faint, and to them that have no might he increases strength," indicating that divine support is available to those who experience weariness. In the New Testament, weariness can also refer to spiritual fatigue. Matthew 11:28-30 invites those who are weary and burdened to come to Jesus for rest, highlighting the compassionate nature of Christ and His willingness to alleviate the burdens of believers. The Apostle Paul speaks to this theme as well, instructing in Galatians 6:9 to "not grow weary in doing good," suggesting that while the path of righteousness may be exhausting, perseverance is ultimately rewarded. Thus, weariness in the biblical context is a multifaceted concept that underscores the human condition while also pointing toward divine relief and encouragement.
