Oprah
In the Bible, Oprah is a name that appears in the Book of Ruth. Oprah, sometimes spelled "Orpah," is known as the Moabite sister-in-law of Ruth. When Naomi, their mother-in-law, decided to return to Bethlehem after the death of her husband and sons, she urged both Ruth and Oprah to return to their own families. While Ruth famously chose to stay with Naomi, declaring her commitment with the words, "Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay" (Ruth 1:16), Oprah decided to return to her people and her gods (Ruth 1:15).The name "Orpah" itself is often associated with the meaning "back of the neck" or "gazelle," which can symbolize swiftness or beauty. However, her choice to return home rather than follow Naomi and Ruth has been interpreted in various ways, often seen as representing a divergence in faith and commitment. In the narrative, Oprah's decision leads her to a life apart from the lineage of David and ultimately the lineage of Jesus, contrasting sharply with Ruth, whose loyalty and faithfulness led her to become an ancestor of Christ (Matthew 1:5). Thus, Oprah serves as a poignant reminder of the choices individuals make in their spiritual journeys.
