Indictment

1 sermons

In the Bible, the term "indictment" can be understood in a broader sense as a formal accusation or charge against an individual or a community for wrongdoing, often articulated in the context of God's judgment. The concept is prevalent in the prophetic literature, where prophets serve as God's messengers to declare the people's sins and the consequences that follow. For instance, in the book of Amos, the prophet delivers a series of indictments against Israel for their social injustices and idolatry, effectively calling the nation to repentance (Amos 2:6-16).The term is not used explicitly in most translations of the Bible, but the idea is captured in passages where God holds His people accountable for their actions. In Micah 6:2, the Lord states, "Hear, O mountains, the Lord's accusation; listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth." This serves as a divine indictment against Israel for their failure to uphold justice and righteousness. Similarly, the New Testament reflects this theme in the words of Jesus, who often rebukes the religious leaders for their hypocrisy and failure to fulfill God's commandments (Matthew 23:13-36). Thus, while "indictment" might not appear as a direct term, the underlying principle of divine accusation and the call to accountability resonates throughout the biblical narrative.
