ἀφειδία (ἀφείδεια Lehm., see s. v. €t,¢),-as, 7, (the disposition of a man who is ἀφειδής, unsparing), unsparing severity: with gen. of the object, rod σώματος. Col. ii. 23 (τῶν σωμάτων ἀφειδεῖν, Lys. 2, 25 (193, 5); Diod. 13, 60; 79 etc. [see Bp. Lghtft. on Col. 1. 6.7; in Plat. defin. p. 412 ἃ. ἀφειδία means liberality).

For the adj. see OGZS 383}53 (i/B.c.) ἐπιθύσεις ἀφειδεῖς λιβανωτοῦ καὶ ἀρωμάτων, and the fine epitaph of a Sergius, martyred under Galerius, Kaze? 1064 (Justinian), referring to the ἀφειδέες ἀγῶνες of the Empress. ‘The adv. is found P Tebt I. 2475 (BC. 117) ἀφει[δ]ῷς, Sy/7 342° (c. B.c. 48) ἀφειδῶς ἑαυτὸϊν ἐπιδ]ιδούς. For the verb see OG/S 640! (iii/A.D.) οὐκ ὀλίγων ἀφειδήσαντα χρημάτων.
