latrine, toilet The term ἀφεδρών occurs only in MAT 15:17 and MRK 7:19 and may be rendered in a number of languages as ‘place of defecation.’ In some languages, however, a reference to a toilet may seem inappropriate for the Scriptures, and it is possible to translate a passage such as MAT 15:17 as ‘goes into the stomach and then passes on out.’ The meaning is thus clear without a specific reference to a latrine or toilet.

ἀφεδρών, -dvos, 6, apparently a word of Macedonian origin, which Suidas calls ‘barbarous’; the place into which the alvine discharges are voided; a privy, sink; found only in Mt. xv. 17; Mk. vii. 19. It appears to be derived not from ἀφ᾽ ἑδρῶν a podicibus, but from ἄφεδρος, the same Macedon. word which in Lev. xii. 5; xv. 19 5646. answers to the Hebr. ΤΠ) sordes menstruorum. Cf. ἀφεδρών. This rare word is found in OG/S 48353391. (ii/B.c.) in the same sense as in Mt 1517, Mk 7}, the only two occurrences of the word in Biblical Greek—Cod.D substitutes ὀχετόν in Mk. In LXX Levy 12? ἡ ἄφεδρος is used in another connexion.
