God’s Prophecies Come True

God lives and works today. Or is that hard for you to believe? Do the pollution and the population problems and the threats of war seem a lot more real to you? God has a solution to all of our problems. It can be found in today's meditation by Basilea Schlink as we take a journey back to the first century, 63 A.D. 63 A.D., 30 years after Jesus' death in Jerusalem, a festival was in full swing.

More and more people poured into the city. The streets were crowded. Music and laughter sounded from all sides.

But suddenly, a shrill cry rang through the streets. Woe, woe to the city and to the nation. It was an unknown peasant who was very quickly arrested, dragged before the courts and whipped for disturbing the peace.

Why did he cry like that? Surely he must have been mad. Peace and prosperity were reigning. There was no danger threatening the city.

Or was there? 30 years before, Jesus Christ had proclaimed the same message. For a time will come upon you when your enemies will set up siege works against you. They will encircle you and hem you in on every side.

They will bring you to the ground, you and your children within your walls, and not leave you one stone standing upon another. Were these only empty words? Years had passed since Jesus had spoken those words, but nothing had happened. Then something did happen.

It was April 14th in the year 70 A.D., the Friday before Passover. Strange, wasn't that the same day on which Jesus had been crucified? Suddenly, three columns of the Roman army descended on the city. The siege works appeared, and the festive atmosphere was replaced by one of horror, fear, and famine.

Thousands of women and children were burned to death. More than 500 crosses encircled Jerusalem on which her citizens were tortured to death. The entire city and temple were destroyed.

Only one day before, no one would have imagined that such a thing was possible. Why did it happen? It happened because beforehand, no one wanted to believe it or wanted to hear the call to repentance. Jesus, who had foretold the disaster, had warned the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

What does this story have to do with us today? Jesus has pronounced prophecies for our time, which are just as clear as those which he pronounced over Jerusalem. Do we recognize the time of affliction today as a call to repentance? Jesus is waiting for us to repent, that is, to turn away from our evil ways, our quarreling, envy, jealousy, lying, and fornication. Repent while there is still time.

Come to Jesus. Choose him as your Lord, and you will be safe in the times of tribulation ahead, safe for time and all eternity. Oh, make me thine, my Savior, Lord most holy, that I may only live to give thee glory.
