Don’t Put an End to It All

God lives and works today, but don't we all know of times of temptation in our lives when we are tempted to doubt this fact? There are so many things that try to dissuade us, that try to bring us into despair. Especially in such times of difficulty, there is one voice in particular which tries to prevail over our lives, whispering with an especially satanic power, Put an end to your life. It no longer has any meaning.

Today's meditation by Basilea Schlink tells what God's reality means for us in just these situations. There's a very definite voice which comes to us from a very definite direction. It whispers softly, almost pleasantly, with understanding and sympathy.

Put an end to your life. Then you'll be free from your suffering. There's really no other way.

You really tried to live, to make the most of life, but it's only brought you emptiness, despair, desolation, shattered dreams, and suffering for body and soul. Put an end to it all. But what if life goes on? What if you continue to live, only in another world? Then you'll be worse off than before, because God lives.

By trying to escape from suffering, you've been running away from Him. And no one can escape from God. It is He who will call you to account for your life, for it is He who has given it to you.

If you've thrown it away, you've thrown it into the hands of the one who is your enemy, the ruler of the kingdom of death. The voice which was so deceptively easy to listen to and follow was the voice of Satan, the liar. He pretended to be sympathetic, but in reality he was inhumanly cruel, for he was only interested in your eternal torment.

You won't die, even if you try to kill yourself. No, you'll continue to live under pain and suffering a thousand times worse than what you have now. All the suffering from which you wanted to escape will only come back to you because no one can flee from God and His judgments.

Therefore, don't turn your heart to death. In doing so, you're turning to Satan, who's the prince of death. Instead, turn to the one who calls himself life, Jesus, the Lord of life.

In Him you'll find rest and peace for your soul, peace which you would never find by searching for death. Jesus, the prince of life, is stretching out His hand to you today. He wants to deliver you.

He will snatch you out of the depths of your suffering, out of your despair, for He has the power to forgive your sins and completely wash them away. He's opening His heart to you, for He loves you and says, You won't die, you shall live. Yes, live with me, live for me.

I will give you a life that's worthwhile, a life full of meaning and joy. That's why Jesus came to earth. Jesus, the one who stands before you now and calls out, It's not too late.

Behold, I make everything new. Yes, even you. Tis only one who has such might, Tis Jesus, who once won the fight, And Satan's power defeated.

And still he puts the foe to flight, And takes from Satan every right, Our living, glorious champion. Alleluia! Alleluia!
