Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

The preacher discusses the concept of judgment and rewards, explaining that God will judge our actions and motives. He references 2 Timothy 4:7, where the apostle Paul declares that he has fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith, anticipating the reward of a crown of righteousness from the righteous judge. The preacher also mentions 1 Corinthians 4:2, which states that stewards of God's mysteries must be found faithful. Overall, the sermon encourages believers to live a life of holiness and faithfulness, knowing that their actions will be judged and rewarded by God.

Corinthians, and up the fifth chapter please, 2nd Corinthians, chapter 5, and Paul is writing to these Corinthians and saying in verse 10, 2nd Corinthians 5 verse 10, For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. And last week in the Bible class here, I think that we've proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that only believers, born again, regenerated saints, will stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For I know that I have those who argue with me sometimes and say, when we talk about we must all appear, they try to make it that this is the great judgment morning, but I'm afraid it won't work. Last week we went very carefully down the wheeze in this chapter, I'll do it quickly for those who were not here last week. Verse 1 says, For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God and house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Need I stop and ask you who the we is? You're not trying to tell me, I hope, that unsaved folks think they have a house eternal in the heavens, because you couldn't get that over on me. It says in verse 2, For in this we groan, and you say to me, well unsaved people groan in their bodies, that's perfectly true, but that's not the full stop. For in this we groan earnestly desiring to be called upon with our house which is from heaven, and you don't tell me that unsaved folks do that. Verse 5 says, Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the spirit, and you don't tell me that's applicable to unsaved. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body. We are absent from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight, and you wouldn't dare to apply that to the unsaved. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord, wherefore we label, that whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him, for we must all stand. Yes, I think that we prove beyond any shadow of a doubt, that we're talking about believers here, and we not only looked up the regenerated of the judgment seat, but last week at the end of the meeting we looked up the reality of the judgment seat of Christ. My meeting closed with a holy awe upon it last week. I've ministered here Tuesday by Tuesday for almost 18 years now, and yet I think that more people came to me, and more people have written to me about last Tuesday's meeting, saying it was the best meeting they were ever in in their life. Would you remember how our dear brother Fred Henry was moved at the end of the meeting? Many of us were moved along with him, God will see. We felt that we were face to face with Christ our Savior. Face to face, what will it be? When in rapture we behold him, Jesus Christ who died for me. But at the judgment seat of Christ we'll not be standing there for adoration, it will be for examination. You remember we touched on this phrase in verse 10, that everyone may receive the things done in his body. According to that he hath done whether it be good or bad. But I think we must get this quite clear, that we're not going to be judged for our sins, you know. Oh no, you can't bring our sins up again. I think that this is something that every child of God should get a grip upon. When our Lord Jesus Christ died on Yom Kippur, Christ died for our sins. Hebrews says, when he had by himself purged our sins. Peter says, who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree. You see, in death he blotted them out, he was bearing them away into the sea of God's forgetfulness. And those of us who have put our arms of faith round the Christ who died and rose again, God has entered into a covenant with us. And the meaning of the covenant is this. Your sins and your iniquities, I will remember no more. God will keep the covenant. It is a far greater work done at Calvary than what you imagine. Every sin, every guilty stain, every scarlet spot. Blessed God, they are removed, taken away, unjustified, whiter than snow, accepted in the blood. Oh no, we are not going to stand at the judgment seat of Christ to have our sins resurrected quite upward on through the work of Calvary. No, we are going to stand there that our service, our whole lifetime of service may be judged. You see, if you follow this properly, it begins a way back there at verse 8. Paul is saying this, we believers are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. You know, that's exactly what happens when a believer dies. You know, you've gone in and looked at an old believer lying in the coffin, and there's one thing that's absolutely clear to you, he's absent from the body. He has departed. He's gone. Yes, that's why the friends in the home are weeping. They have lost the loved one. Well, let me tell you the whole story. The moment a believer is absent from the body, he is present with the Lord. There's no purgatory in that thing. Just in that split second, the moment he's absent, present. No purgatory there. There is no purgatory in this book. It is only in the Roman Church, but not in this book. Now, when a believer dies, he's absent from the body, he's present with the Lord. What a wonderful thing. The soul and spirit moves out, and he's absent from the body. The real man moves in, present with the Lord. And Paul is doing this. He says, we are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. And then he says this, wherefore we label? You see, he's getting down to service now. Wherefore we label, we endeavor, we work, we serve. All the same words. That whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him, for we must all appear. You see, it's not the deeds of sins that's going to be examined. No, it's the deeds of service. We looked at ministry last week for the moment. What's all this ministry about? All these 18 years standing behind this book, what's it all about? To exalt the pastor? To just help the Baptist along? God forbid, ten thousand times, God forbid. My, if that's all that's in my mind, what a miserable creature I shall be, when I stand before the everlasting sea. Oh, no, it's not that at all. I think that you'll see it clearer if we go to 1 Corinthians, and that the third chapter. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, and that the third chapter, please. In verse 11 he says, For other foundations hath no man laid than that which is laid, which is Christ. Christ is our foundation. How often we sing on, Christ was followed, rock I stand, all other ground is fainting sand. You see, the church was built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. You remember once in one of our studies, I pointed out all the positions Christ takes up with regards to his people. You see, he's on beneath them, he's our foundation. And at the same time, he's up above us. The highest place that heaven affords, it's his by sovereign right. Look, he's faint, the sight is glorious. He's exalted, far above all. God hath given him a name that's above every name, not only in this world, but in the world to come. He's underneath us, he's up above. And when you think of the psalmist telling this, like as the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so is the Lord round about his people. He's underneath, he's up above, he's round about. You see, the fact is, we're in Christ. What a wonderful position to be in. And Jude puts a word to it. Jude says, preserved in Christ Jesus. It's not being lost again. It's being preserved, and you want to mark it in red ink. It's where we are tonight. Yet he's talking to them here about the foundation. And then he says this in verse 12. Ah, that's the bit, you see. It's what sort it is. It's any man's work. All the believers standing there, it's their work. It's your service. It's how you have served the Lord. What has been your motive? That's the whole point, you know. And we'll get down to this a bit more clearer and nearer as the night goes on. We looked at the regenerated at the judgment seat, and we looked at the reality of the judgment seat. Now we want to start, really, tonight, we want to look at the reason. What's the reason of all this? Why bring these faiths before this beamer? Yes, why is it our service that's being judged? What's the reason for all this? Let's go back to where we started last week. Do you remember 2 Timothy? 2 Timothy chapter 4. And as Paul comes to the end of his life of service, he writes this letter to Timothy, 2 Timothy chapter 4 verse 6. He says, For I am now ready to be offered. He was about to be led out, and his head was to be placed on the block, and he was to be beheaded for Christ's sake, and he was. He says, I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love is appearing. You know, one thing that we've got to get into our minds, is that when we meet the Lord in the air, it will not only be as the Lord himself, as the master of the house, as the chief shepherd. We shall meet him as the righteous judge. You know, maybe some of us think we have fooled the Lord. Ah, well, you've never fooled the Lord once. You know, the Lord has said a lot of things in this book. Let's have a look at what he says to us through James, and it's James chapter 4. James, the fourth chapter, and in verse 1, From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence even of your lusts that war in your memory? Ye lust and have not. Ye kill and desire to have, and can it obtain. Ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss. You know, sometimes we get all worked up in the prayer meeting, you know, and sometimes with emotional language, and maybe beads of sweat upon our brow, and a tone in our voice which touches all and sundry. You know, we are asked of something. Ah, but your heart's not right at all. Oh, you want something. Yes, you want it. You want it for yourself. Your life of praying service will be examined. The Lord say, you know, remember how you cry. The Lord has to speak, you know. You will know at that moment exactly as he knows you. You know, you'll begin to see. You know, there was a whole lot of things I cried for. It wasn't for the glory of the Lord at all. It was just to consume it upon myself. You remember what he said to his apostles when he was speaking to them. Have a look at this. This is Matthew's Gospel, and it's the sixth chapter. And it's the very first recorded words of our Lord Jesus Christ concerning prayer. In verse five, this is what he said to his disciples. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be of the hypocrites are. Chapter six, verse five. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets that they may be seen of men. Mind you, you are not allowed to judge this. Only the Lord can judge this sort of thing. A man can get up to pray and close his eyes. And with every emotion moving, he can pretend to pray to God when he's only wanting the amens of men. And the Lord won't let you off of it. You're not going into the heavens bluffing the Lord, you know. All the praying is going to be brought before our hearts and minds. Was it only to be seen of men? Was it only for the amens of the congregation? Was it just to be heard? For a moment it would be. Here is what he said again to his disciples. He said, verse seven. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they shall be heard for their much wishing. You know, I learned a lesson when I was quite a young fellow from these two verses. I learned that when I went to the prayer meeting, I must not be man-conscious. I'm not praying to men. And I must not be word-conscious. Oh, it's not praises. My, this is like what the heathen do. Do over a repetition. This is what the rosary does for you. Vain repetition it is. It'll be no good. It'll not work. You can't bluff the Lord, you know. Oh, some of us talk about the rosary and that prayer book, and some of us have prayers written in our souls. We repeat the thing anyway. Yes, we just work without the rosary and without the prayer book. My, I believe that sometimes I could say some of your prayers for you. Yes, let's be very careful now. You know, we're going to stand there, and every man's work will be manifest. It'll be a terrible day. It'll be much worse than what I'm getting at just now. God will make you conscious that this is what you've been praying about half your life. We think it's not only the praying, you know. It's the preaching. Let's have a look at Philippians chapter 1. Letter to the Philippians. Paul was a prisoner here. He was Caesar's prisoner. He was in bonds. And he said, verse 12, Philippians 1 verse 12, But I would that ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the fervorance of the gospel, so that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace. My, these very kings brought them face to face with Roman soldiers in the palace, and they taught them the gospel and in all other places. And then it did this for some, And many of the brethren in the lords, wexing confident by my bonds, my gifts and courage, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. And he puts this little bit in, Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife, some also of goodwill. The one preached Christ of contention, not sincerely, causing to our deflection to my bonds. You know, there were boys going about and they were preaching Christ and hoping that it would get Paul into deeper water. They were not sincere. Oh, you can carry on a meeting every Sunday night, you can get through the message, you can do so many wonderful things, and it's no use! I want you to get a hold of that. My, I've got to stand there, and every word must be weighed by the master, and every motive must be measured, and every piece of service must be scrutinized. All the praying, all the preaching, all the giving. Yes, it's all going to be examined. Every man's work. It's just the work, not the sin. You know, I want you to get this little bit. You see, the reason for the judgment seat is, it's going to bring the Lord out as the righteous judge. He's not waiting at anything. And it's going to vindicate His holiness. And I'll tell you this, it's put in this book to stimulate our holiness. Have a look at 1 Corinthians 4 for a moment. 1 Corinthians 4. We were at 1 Corinthians 3 a moment ago, but let's go on to the next chapter. Chapter 4. Verse 1. It says, Let a man through account of us as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful. And he looked round the church and he said this, But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you. Mind you, Paul wouldn't let the church judge him. You see, you're not able to judge a man's service. You might have ideas in your heart. You might think he's doing this or doing that or doing the other. You're not to do any judging. And let me tell you, if you do, it's a small thing, as far as I'm concerned, that I would be judged by the lake of you. It's a very small thing. You're not my judge, thank God. And then he went a bit further and he said, With me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgments. Well, the world would love to judge me too. Yeah, the world sees me with a new suit on now and again, the same man is doing. Yeah, they don't know that they're getting the clothes given to me for the war. Shoes that I've worn, somebody bought me them. The socks I have worn, somebody bought me them. The shirt I have worn, somebody bought it. The new tie the person in the meeting bought me, that new tie the other day, and you're going to say your name there. Yeah. Oh, the world looks after me wonderfully well. I'm not worried about the world's judgment. I can talk, you know, the world's not my judge. And then he went a bit further. He said, With me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment. Yea, I judge not mine own self. You know, way down in the depths of each one of us, there's an old house. My, it's, it's desperately wicked. Who can know it? So he watches the house. He says, For I know nothing by myself, yet am I not hereby justified. He that judges me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time until the Lord come. Won't you start to do the judging just now, because you're not capable. Who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the things that went on in your heart, the counsel of your heart. He'll know if you were really moved when you prayed for sinners. He'll know the objective of everything you did and said and preached. He'll know it. He'll make manifest. For there it will be. Yes, I want to get this bit over to you. Let's have a look at something that's in Romans chapter 14. Romans 14. This is a tremendous chapter. I think we would need a whole night on it, but I'll just touch the things as needed. Writing to these saints and remember their believers at Rome, it says, Him that is weak in the faith receive ye. You know, we always get members coming into the fellowship who are weak in the faith about some things, and we've got to be very careful with them. They need to be nourished and cared for. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputation. Don't be starting to dispute in it. Sometimes some of the older brethren, you know, they love to take a young convert and put him through the mangle of their reasonings. How dare you! Don't you think that if a man calls on the name of the Lord he shall be saved? Do you believe it? Then leave him alone. You're not supposed to take him for doubtful disputation. Some of you, that's all you're good for, arguing with me, fellas. It only says, it says for one believer that he may indulge in another who is weak. He's a pharisee. He's got a conscience about me. It is let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not. Let not him that eateth not judge him that eateth for God hath received him. And he looks round the crowd and he says, Who art thou that judgest another man's servants? He says, Oh Master, he stands as a fool. You know, sometimes some of the servants of God, it seems that not only the whole assembly judges them but the whole world judges them. I think that poor old Paisley comes on to this, doesn't he? Often I've had to stand up for him and say, Who art thou that judgest another man's servants? I don't agree with everything that he does, you know. He knows that quite well. He and I have talked that over many times. I don't agree with many things he does. That doesn't make him wrong, you know. He's right. It's just that I won't do it. And I don't think the Lord wants me to do it. But maybe the Lord wants him to do it. That's between him and the Lord. Who art thou? Who do you think you are? You're going to judge the servants of God, are you? You go and mind your own business. You're not capable of doing that. Let me swing from Paisley to Billy Graham. Yeah, they judge him too. Oh, I don't agree with half of the things he does. Ah, but then he's not my servant. I'm sure he saved you. I'm sure of that much. I'll tell you, you just leave him alone. The Lord will correct it all. He doesn't need you. You just leave it alone. Who art thou that judges another man's servants? For he's our master. He stands us all. Oh, we need to learn here, man. We're always buttering one another about. Aren't we? Well, just look after yourself and you'll be all right. He says this, verse 7, For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord, or whether we die, we die unto the Lord. Whether we live therefore or die, we are the Lord. For to this end Christ both died and rose and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. But why dost thou judge thy brother? Oh, why dost thou set it not thy brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. I think that'll cool the whole lot of us down. What a day it will be. I'll have to worry about Paisley in that day, and the dreamies, I'll have to give an account for myself, just on my own. And you will have to give an account for yourself. And I'll tell you there'll not be one of us very big at all. There'll be so many things made manifest in that moment that you'll hang your head in shame probably. Not of too much. This, this is the Lord, and I want you to get the hold of this. Let's go back to 1 Corinthians chapter 3. 1 Corinthians 3. Verse 13. Every man's work shall be made manifest. And I think we aren't to underline the work. It's not the deeds of sins. It's the deeds of service. Every man's work shall be made manifest. For the day shall be created because it shall be tried by fire. Yes, we'll stand before God that day. We must remember that our Lord Jesus Christ into whose hands have been committed all judgment, that he is God. And remember God is a consuming fire. And the fire of his holiness will try every part of service, and you'll know exactly how you've carried on. You'll know the motives in your heart, the counsels of your heart, the why and wherefores of all that you did in the name of Jesus. And when we're tried, or our works are tried, it says if any man's work abides which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. Go back to verse 12. If any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble. That's just how the whole service is looked at. It's a great sacred of speech, of course. I believe this. You don't need to swallow this unless you want to. I believe that everything that is honestly done from the depths of my heart and soul for Christ will be like gold. Everything that is done honestly for Christ will come out like gold. And if I gave money and in my heart and soul it was for the Lord, then it will come out like gold. I believe that every honest effort I ever made to rescue men from the depths of pain will come out like silver. Never make an honest effort. Take your sinners around. I believe that everything I did in life to help and bless and comfort and edify believers will come out like precious stones. And all the ulterior motives it will come out like wood and hay. It will be no good. It will fade away. Wonder how your whole life of service will end when it's viewed under the holiness of God. Wonder how it will be. This, that will be the issues of the judgment seat. But I don't want to dwell so much on the reality or the reason or the issues. I want to look at the rewards. You know, the rewards are very interesting because this whole judgment seat as we looked at it last week it's not the judge sitting on the bench to condemn or to bring in justice. Oh no, it's like the judge at the horse show as the horses jump or go round in the ring. This is the judge handing out rewards. Yes, for those who have come through with flying colours. And the rewards that he's handing out are very interesting. Let's go back to that 2nd Timothy again. This is the most interesting one to me. Paul's at the end of his day as we said and he's saying to Timothy 2nd Timothy 4 verse 7 He says, I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day. And Paul was pretty sure of this. You know, I think that there's a lot here in fighting the good fight and in finishing the course and keeping the faith. You know, in fighting this good fight he's standing up and in finishing the course he's going through. And in keeping the faith he's unmovable. And I believe if we can take our stand for Christ in this evil day and I feel it if we can press on towards the mark keep going on, going through and we're unmovable then there's the crown of righteousness. And the thing that will help us to do this more than anything else is just to love His appearing. I believe the man that gets the blessed hope away down in his heart and he loves Christ's appearing my, that man will be steadfast and unmovable and always abounding in the work of the Lord. So I want you to get the hold of that. Here's another one that's the crown of righteousness I want you to have a look at this. This is 1 Corinthians and it's chapter 9. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians and it's chapter 9. You know Paul was a great old warrior. He says in verse 20 And unto the Jews I became of the Jews that I might gain the Jews. For them that are under the law is under the law that I might gain them that are under the law. For them that are without law are without law being not without law to God but under law to Christ. That I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak that I might gain the weak. I have made all things to all men that I might by all means save some. You know this man had souls in his heart. You remember him crying in Romans My heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved. He says you know I have great heaviness and continuous sorrow in my heart for my kinsmen according to the flesh. I wonder how we are now. I wonder are we making the band we should that men and women would get saved. You remember what the old faction of the church said to the Americans who came asking about Murray MacShane. And the big American said Do you remember MacShane were you here? Yes he said. He said tell me about him. Tell me about the man. And he took the American by the arm brought him into the vestry set him down in the chair opened the big Bible on the table said put your elbow on that side and one on that side and the American smiling. He said put your faith into your hands. Now he said if you can sit there for the next eight hours and weep continually for souls you are MacShane. Remember MacShane was the Presbyterian minister. There was not a Baptist in the meeting there was anything of both. The fellow was all out you know. All out. You wonder what we are playing at sometimes. Then he said this when he got that over to him and he might say some. He said and this I do for the gospel's sake that I might be partaker thereof with you. Do you not that they which run in a race run all? But one receiveth the prize. So run that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown. But we are incorruptible. I therefore shall run not as on certainly shall fight I not as one that beateth the air but I keep under my body. Bring it into subjection. Lest that by any means when I have preached to others I myself should be a cast away. Always not thinking of getting lost again. He is the man who talked about the work of the cross persecuting us forever. Now he is thinking about that day. Now stand there. You know if I don't keep this old body under if this old flesh is not mortified and crucified if it's not put into the place of death daily then I'll do the job. How the corruptible crown is won keeping the old man in the place of death. Yes the crown of righteousness is won by being spread fast and unmovable. See 1st Thessalonians for a moment. 1st Thessalonians and at the end of the 2nd chapter 1st Thessalonians is writing to these young believers at Thessalonica a church was just formed there and Paul is writing he says verse 17 2nd chapter verse 17 But we brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart endeavored the more abundantly to see your face with great desire. Wherefore we would have come unto you even I, Paul, once and again but Satan hindered us for what is our hope our joy, our crown of rejoicing are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus that is coming. You know that's the crown that's worth going in for. What a day it will be when we meet the Lord in the air and all the folks that we have won for Christ are standing there. You know that will be the sole winner's crown. You won souls for Christ. Wonder how many in your lifetime you have fished out of the waters of sin and led savingly to the Christ of the cross. Would you have a sole winner's crown? Yeah, you know that will be a wonderful day when the crown of righteousness and the incorruptible crown and the crown of rejoicing is given out. Here's one worth thinking about. It's in the book of the Revelation and it's the second chapter. Book of the Revelation and in the second chapter it's saying to this church in verse 10 it's the church of Smyrna and it's saying in verse 10 Behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison that you may be tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days but be thou faithful unto death I will give thee a crown of life. You know there will be martyrs stand up in that day and you know it may well be before Jesus comes that some of us may have to seal our testimony yet with our blood and we'll see what we really mean then won't we? Wonder how many of us would be able and willing to lay down our lives for the Lord Jesus. Mine will be a crown for all the masters in that day. And here's another crown it's in 1 Peter chapter 5 Peter was a great old preacher and he said this 1 Peter 5 verse 1 He said the elders which are among you I exhort He's talking to all the elders in the meeting The elders which are among you I exhort to them also an elder Mind you it's well to notice that he only called himself an elder Some people say he was the first pope Well he didn't know a thing about it He's just calling himself an elder We are also an elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed He never thought for a moment he would be lost again Now he was pretty sure that he would be a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed And speaking to the elders he said Feed the flock of God which is among you Seeking the oversight thereof Not by constraint but willingly Not for filthy looker but of a ready mind Neither as being lords over God's heritage But being in samples to the flock And when the chief shepherd shall appear He shall receive a crown of glory He does not away You know I believe that those who feed the flock of Christ They deserve a crown of glory Sometimes I stand up here for Preaching nearly an hour and a half at night Trying to cut the bread And feed the flock And I have no ulterior motives in my heart I say what I think I should say And I fear no mans mind And I seek or covet no mans mind I talk to the Lord all day I was talking to the Lord before some of you were up this morning Five this morning Talk to him about what I should say in this meeting Sometimes when I turn the book up And cut the bread and feed the flock Man I get the letter the next morning written by the devil himself Oh yes I know his writing now No name at the bottom of it I know it's him There I get me a regular And they call me for everything under the sun Oh they are old fashioned now And the moment I see the credit of the letter And I go to the end and see no name I screw it up and throw it in the fire And I don't know what the middle bit is about at all And I am not wanting to know You are whispering your five D's Friends These crowns are worth going in for My this crown of righteousness For taking your stand This crown of rejoicing For fetching for foe Fishing for men This crown of life It may never be ours We may never be ours But if we endure and the Lord knows our hearts It may well be given Doctor Ironside preached once On going in with all his might For all his crowns An old lady waited at the end of the meeting She said Doctor I have always looked up to you As being a holy man of God You don't tell me that you are really Bothering to get these crowns Yes I am I put all my weight into it I put everything I have into it I am after these crowns She said I just thought you did it Because you love the Lord Well he said that is why I do it Because you know what I am going to do with them When I get them I will be like the boys in the book of the revelation I shall cast them out of sight You know they cast their crown Would you like to have some? You know when you think of the loss that can be Because our lives have been all self We just worked for self With all self Oh I know we ran about And I know we did this And I know we did the other And we made such a fuss And such a dramatic show I have been on the knees It is only to let people see My what a day it will be when church is messed up And then some people work all for facts Their crown At the meeting the other night I heard more about Baptist Than I ever heard in my life You would think there was no Christ I get sick of it It is not a fact I am working for It is Christ Oh let the fact just Start working for a place And let the person God help you Yes Some people work for Facts And some people work for a fact Some people work for a schism Boy they don't write something in the meeting And they are really going to start one on their own Oh I have seen this before now Oh yes they are going to tear the place down And build a new meeting Say never you be guilty of breaking the people of God in truth I can grow to that door tomorrow And I shall gladly go before I meet that meeting Not schism Some people work for silver Just money isn't it It is self, it is fact It is schism It is silver Oh let's get back To working honestly for Christ For the souls of men For the benefit and blessing of God's people No matter what flag they fly Look at this clergyman We have got all clergy Bless you This is a flock of God My aim is to help you I must be allowed to preach the truth You can't chin me up It will be no good It's not what you want you'll get here It's what you need you'll get here Brethren and sisters What a day it will be Let me just turn from that for a moment Is there somebody here on faith? Dear on faith friend if you die in your sins You'll stand not at the judgment seat of Christ But at the great white throne And the books will be opened against you And you'll see your deeds And you'll know the way you've treated God's Son And the sacrifice of the cross And the blood of the Lamb And you'll go to hell And be damned forever You did right Lord Stop criticizing God's people And dear friend Live with eternity Now you've been healed May God bless you And may the Lord bring us together again Days over And I say as we part this evening If there are any more riots in Belfast I would ask all these people to keep out of it All will find there All will go near us All have taken a notion to go to see what's going on We have nothing to do with shitting No We need to love our Roman Catholic friends more than we've ever done before We need to bring them Christ Some of us were born in dark Roman Catholicism Even if we would have bothered finding Christ Keep out of this fight Keep out of these riots Keep on your knees Keep the cross of Christ in one eye And the coming of Christ in the other one And you'll be found in the center of the King's Highway Will you be there when the trumpet sounds? I'll be there You'll be there God bless you I think we'll sing this old hymn tonight 983 When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound And time shall be no more And the morning breaks eternal, bright and fair And the sails of earth shall gather over on the other shore And the roll is called up yonder I'll be there, 983 please O When the day shall fall Let's take a big breath Just one verse to go We're off for a month I want to let the whole town hear us singing this evening Everybody sing Old and young Whether you can sing or whether you cannot, I can make a noise, that's one thing I do know. Now you're taking a big deep breath now, and you're pulling out every stop, never mind whether you hit the notes properly or not, but you're singing at your loudest. And the swans are having a meeting over there, so we're going to let them hear us. All together now, in the last breath. Thank you. Dear Lord, for all thy help to us in this clouds, we bow to thee, we bow to thee, we give thee thanks. Pass off now in thy fields, and with thy blessings, for thy holy name's sake, amen.
