Leonard Ravenhill

Leonard Ravenhill (1907 - 1994). British-American evangelist, author, and revivalist born in Leeds, England. Converted at 14 in a Methodist revival, he trained at Cliff College, a Methodist Bible school, and was mentored by Samuel Chadwick. Ordained in the 1930s, he preached across England with the Faith Mission and held tent crusades, influenced by the Welsh Revival’s fervor. In 1950, he moved to the United States, later settling in Texas, where he ministered independently, focusing on prayer and repentance. Ravenhill authored books like Why Revival Tarries (1959) and Sodom Had No Bible, urging the church toward holiness. He spoke at major conferences, including with Youth for Christ, and mentored figures like David Wilkerson and Keith Green. Married to Martha Beaton in 1939, they had three sons, all in ministry. Known for his fiery sermons and late-night prayer meetings, he corresponded with A.W. Tozer and admired Charles Spurgeon. His writings and recordings, widely available online, emphasize spiritual awakening over institutional religion. Ravenhill’s call for revival continues to inspire evangelical movements globally.

Sermon Transcription
So I'm coming to you this morning with a fractured body and a failing memory, but a flaming heart. The American way of doing anything is with lightning and thunder and show and palaver and, you know, blowing up balloons and all the other junk. That's the American way. And the American way to evangelize, of course, is to go to a city, take a big haul, raise money, flamboyant, get some girl who can gargle to music, and you call it singing sometimes, but anyhow, I call it gargling to music very often. And you put on a show. Well, this week I had, as usual, we have a lot of visitors. The week before last, I think we had 40 visitors to the house. And last week I had a young man came. Good to see you. And until a few years ago, he was about number one policeman in Canada. And they gave him a special course of, what do you call it now, criminal law. And he began to go up the scale like that. Then just when he got to the place where he had it all made, the Lord said, Leave all and follow me. And did what he stupidly did, he obeyed the Lord. Isn't that terrible? And he kept saying, Oh, my church is growing and growing. And I thought, Oh, mercy, I got that in Canada, the fastest growing church in Canada. There's 50 of them, of course, in Dallas. Everybody's got their fastest growing church. Some preach the Baptist brand of theology. Some preach Pentecostal. Some preach Word of Life. Most of them have Word of Death, but they don't say anything about it. So here I've got this handsome young guy in my home. I say, Your church is growing and growing and growing. How many do you get on Sunday? He said, 150. Well, how long have you been there? Oh, maybe three years. 150? How many live in the town where your church is? I don't live in the town. Well, how many live in the village? I don't live in the village. Where do you live? The side of the road. Well, how many people live on the side of the road? He said, 78. That's a good percentage. Out of 78 people, he gets 115 church. How in the world do you do that? By prayer and fasting. No gimmicks. No fancy attractions and so forth. But I learned how to evangelize. He said, One of the amazing things is, there was a big church there. And nobody had preached in it for a hundred years. It had locks outside and it was filthy. He went to the mayor of the town and said, I'd like to use that church. So they said, Well, it's no good. We rented it to some people for a theater and it closed the first week. Then we rented it as a bowling alley and it closed. What do you want it for? He said, a church. Well, do you want to rent it or buy it? They said, Buy it. The mayor says, All right, it'll cost you a dollar. You see, if you had faith like that, you'd have a church like that. So he got a lovely church for a dollar. He got in and dug on the platform, discovered the stage they put there. Underneath was the real one. So he tore the stage off the top and they got the old stage, the old church stage. Then at the back they found the pulpit. So they put the pulpit together. Then somebody else said, You know, the other, oh, the mayor said, You can't ever add to the church because it's unique. It's a, it's a, what do you call it? A tourist attraction and it can't be changed. The style is Victorian. Okay. So then somebody else said, You know, the other attraction in town. You know, an old man who lives in a house, it's boarded up. It says, Well, no visitors. Keep away. Leave me alone. And everybody did that. Boy, he skunk. He stunk. He smelled like a skunk. Never bathed. Had a dirt floor in the house. No running water. No electricity. And then he's living in total misery. So the young pastor said, The best thing to do to evangelize. We'll go and talk to this man. He won't let you talk to him. You can't see him. So two other men in church said, We're going to see him. So they slipped him a note and said, Please put your dirty clothes. That's a joke. Put your dirty clothes in a sack at the door. We'll pick them up every week and we'll wash them and return them to you. So they did that. Then after a while, they began to talk to him. Then they took him some food and little by little made a communication. So then of all things, he thought these people were real. So he came to church. And better still, he got saved. A lady in the village said, You know, Christians have been in this village a hundred years. They never do aught for an old man. He's poor. He's wretched. He's stinking. He's poverty. Everything oozes out of him except mercy and love. If they can do anything for him, I'll go to church. So when they saw them picking up the old man, which was now transformed. He got washed and had a new suit and went to church and got saved. She went to church and she got saved. And as a result of that, somebody else got saved. So there you are. So all you have to do is find a lousy old man in town and take care of him. Don't know, go at once. You'll scare him. Then a lady called me about, wasn't it Jackie called two months ago? How many of you read Jackie Pullinger's story? Well, Jackie called me. She'd just got back from Africa. And she said, Brother Leonard, I told you I'd call you when I got back from Africa. I said, yes. So she beamed out. One of the trouble spots, one of the roughest spots there I think is Soweto, isn't it? Where they've been fighting in street, bloody and dirty. She'd been around the world a number of times. But she said, Leonard, I've never seen anything as filthy in my life. And she was able to speak to the pastors of the town. There are a number of churches. And so one pastor said to her, do you have the problem? Can you answer? Have you a problem for our town? She said, no, I don't. Well, you tell that to us. Supposing we let you go around our churches and ask you, do you have the answer for us in this city? What would you say? I'd say, no, I don't. What are you doing here? We know about your work. You're one of the most amazing ministers in the world. All you do is deal with criminals and perverts. You cast out demons almost every day. You never ask for money. You're one of the most amazing ministers in the whole world. Well, what did you come here for, if you'd answer? She said, I came here to learn. And immediately this big black brother said to her, you've passed your test. She said, what test? Well, everybody that comes here from America says, you know what? We could come to your town, either bring a big tent or rent one of the big halls there and have a ministry. We could change this town to our ministry. Or somebody from England comes and says the same thing. Well, she said, don't do that. But we want you to come back. Here's a little stylish English lady that still plays the oboe in the Hong Kong Symphony. In order to reach that level of people, she has a university degree, I think, from Cambridge, England. She's mixed up with the upper crust, in fact. The Queen of England gave her an MBE, which the Queen doesn't give knighthoods to women. So she gave her an MBE, which she doesn't know a thing about. I think she threw it in the garbage anyhow. And there's this precious little lady. And she said, then these men said, listen, we want you to come back here. Nobody talks to us like this. You don't have the answer, you say you've come to learn. Well, supposing you come back, what will you do? Do you know what she said? She said, I'll bring 20 people with me. The first thing we'll do is sweep the streets. The second thing we'll do is bathe all the babies in the whole town. And the third thing is we'll start an orphanage. If you ever know anybody of Angela, would Dimmis Ruggat start like that? Would Billy Graham start like that? Would you like to start like that? We all want to do some flamboyant, wonderful thing. Come and hear me preach. Come and do this. What we need is a bunch of people that start washing feet. I've had three different people want to take me to Hong Kong, pay all my fare and everything else. And they said, do you want to go to Hong Kong? I said, I want to go to Hong Kong for one thing. This dear lady asked me to go and teach for two weeks. I said, I don't know what I'll do there. Well, what do you want to do? I want to go to Hong Kong for one thing only. What? To wash her feet. I'll call a congregation together. I'll call all the staff there. And we'll have a little ceremony of washing feet. Because that's what Jesus did. You don't need to be clever to preach. If you did, I wouldn't be able to do it. But you see, we've forgotten how to be servants. We want to start at the top and work downwards. Jesus said, start at the bottom and work upwards. Well, this is a very critical week in the history of America. I receive almost hundreds of telephone calls a day from America and outside the world. And this past week, everybody's been telling me that, what, is it tomorrow there's going to be an earthquake? Will you be disappointed if there isn't? So there's going to be an earthquake tomorrow. No, but what this man called, was it Saddam? What did he call the guy that caused all the trouble? Saddam Hussein or Saddam Insane? Saddam Hussein. He's done more for the church in the last two or three weeks than Billy Graham's done for years. Everybody in the country's talking about the second coming today. I got magazines this week. Don't you know we're in the last days? No, I've no idea. I've no idea at all. Because I don't believe it. You don't believe we're living in the last days? No, I don't. There are two texts I'm going to say quickly. And one is Paul's letter to Timothy, 2 Timothy chapter 3. You know how it begins. Let me just read it quickly. 2 Timothy chapter 3, verse 1. Know this also, that in when? The last days. Do you remember Hebrews 1 and verse 1? God who at sunlit times and in divers manners spake unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these, what? Last days. What did Peter say on the day of Pentecost? In these last days. So this is 2 Timothy 3, verse 1. Know also, in these last days. Not these last days, you and I. In these last days, when he wrote that. 2,000 years ago. Peter says in these last days. 2,000 years ago. Hebrews 1 says in these last days. We're 2,000 years past the last days. We're not in the last days. We're in the end time. That's spoken of again by the apostle John. Well, that's the word, I believe, for the church today. That he hath in these last days spoken unto us by his son. In these last days, men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce bearers, false accusers, incontinent fears. Oh, but wait a minute. What did Mr. Bush tell us the other day? We ought to be dancing and happy. Why? Because the Berlin Wall has gone down. That was a political moment over. It was planned. I'm not concerned about the Berlin Wall. What about the Gulag Archipelago? There's maybe 10,000 insane people there. Nobody said anything about that in Washington. But don't you realize what's happening? Yes, but you don't. For what? For this reason. We were told last week we should be very happy. Do you know why? Because Mr. Gorbachev has decided that America should go in and fight. Isn't that wonderful? He's only got 12,000 men there. We've got 250,000. He doesn't care how many are raped. Oh, he says go in America. What did somebody say the other day? We may be able to kick the old boy out of Iraq and only lose what? 30,000 men. And 95% of them will be Americans. Yes, there's Mr. Gorbachev. For 25 years, he's wanted to get as near as he can to the Middle East. And there he is, right in the middle of the whole thing. He hasn't fired a shot. It's hardly cost him a dime. We had him and fed him. He's the biggest rogue and thief and liar and devil in the world. And he was seated in the White House with the president. Right after the president, some homosexuals there for the first time in history. Well, in God's name, where are we going? I've got a book here. It's written by an American. It's called Worldly Saints. Do you sell this, Jack? Worldly Saints. Do I get commission if I sell something? Let me tell you what it says. Here's one of the most astonishing things I've read. And I've read thousands. I have a library of about, I don't know, 2,000, 3,000 books. But you see, in the 1700s, if an Englishman came to America, which, of course, only wealthy men could do it. It took three months to come from England to America on a boat. It took three months. They stayed six months. Three months to go back was a year. Now you can do that trip that took three months, you can do it in three hours. Not on an American plane, an English plane, of course. Well, English and French Concorde in three hours. But when a man got back to England, they would say to him, Well, Sir Thomas, come to the government this week and tell us what you found in the country you went to. So here's his report. This man returned to England from America. He told Parliament in his sermon, now listen carefully, I've lived in a country for seven years, not seven days, not seven weeks, not seven months, seven years, five, seven years. I've lived in that country seven years. I never saw one beggar. I never heard one curse word. I never saw one drunkard. Why should there be beggars in England, beggars in England, when there's so much work to do? Then Richard Baxter of Kidderminster undertook a successful program and began to clothe the poor. But isn't that staggering that in a country which you're sitting in right now, there wasn't one drunkard, there wasn't one man in rags, there wasn't one man cursed. Every man was doing his job and the country was functioning properly. Seventy years ago in England, I picked up a piece of paper and I read a little poem. I've only seen it once since and I'm not sure I can quote it properly. It went like this. Oh England, thou privileged nation, how truly thy children are blessed. Thou hast since the first reformation had liberty, riches, and rest. Such blessings are not of thy making. It is God who has given thee all. But if divine laws thou art breaking, like Babylon too thou shalt fall. Thine armies and navies will fail thee if thus the Lord God thou forsake. Political schemes won't avail thee if sacred commandments thou break. For God has his eyes on this nation. Oh England, to thee will be sent the doom of thy just condemnation. Accept, I accept, thou repent. That was written right before World War I. I remember World War I breaking out on the 4th of August 1914. I remember the army going up and down the streets before my cousin registered to join the army. He came back in a red jacket, flaming red jacket and blue slacks with a big red stripe at the side. He went out six feet one in height, athletic, came back crippled with a body all broken and died not long after as a prize of war. Now we're piling up armaments. Isn't it amazing? Did you notice what they said recently? The cure for AIDS, do you know what it is? Open more hospitals. That's like saying the cure for death is build more cemeteries. Aren't we marvelous? Did not happen in Texas this year, you Texans? There was a fever amongst the chickens and there was heat so hot that the chickens couldn't even live. So they were dying in tens of thousands. And so what did they do? They had a government investigation and they sent the geniuses down. You know the PhDs and all the other Ds? DDs, dumb Ds and all the other Ds. So they came in to one of the greatest farms in the country and there were chickens by the thousand laying down gasping. And they sent a report which the government graciously published to help us, to educate us. It said the chickens that are gasping have a better chance of survival than the ones that are dead. Now you couldn't have thought of that in ten years, could you? Of course you couldn't, you don't have a PhD. PhD means pretty helpless and dumb, but anyhow. Isn't it amazing? Now what's the other text? Let me get to it quickly. It's in the gospel recorded by Luke and chapter 17. Let me begin at verse 20. And when he was demanded of the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them, The kingdom of God cometh not by observation, neither say, Lo here or Lo there, for behold, the kingdom of God is with you. And he said unto the disciples, The days will come when ye shall desire to see the days of the Son of Man. Okay, let's skip to verse 25. The first, he must suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation, that was that generation. Now verse 26, And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man. Have you noticed recently they've been pushing two things a book? What's it called now? Looking Back into the Future, and the film coming out now, Looking Back into the Future. That's exactly what Jesus does here. He's going to talk to the future, but first of all, he goes back as it was, in the days of Noah, so what? So shall it be, in the days of the Son of Man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, or as one interpretation is, they exchanged wives. They were given their marriage until the day the Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise, as it was in the days of Lot, they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded. The same day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Now what did Noah do? Ask any child what Noah did, he'll tell you, he built an ark. That's not what he's remembered for, actually. In 2 Peter it says, Noah was a preacher of righteousness. Now he built an ark. Remember, he didn't build a canoe. He didn't build a fishing boat. He didn't build a boat just to take his family. In fact, it was exclusively to his family. It was some boat. It was 450 feet long, the deck was 75 feet wide, and the boat was 45 feet high. It had three stories. And for 120 years, that doesn't sound much, does it? Or does it? For 120 years he was what? He was building a testimony to the faithfulness of God. For 120 years. Remember, he didn't go down the road to Sears or somewhere and buy pre-cut wood and nails. He had to cut the trees, season the wood, stack it on one side, everybody. What are you going to do? I'm going to build a what? An ark. What do you mean build an ark? Have you noticed it said they'd never seen rain? The earth was watered with dew every morning. And you say there's going to be holes in the sky and holes in the ground and water's going to come up and come. That's nuts. You know, we had a preacher, something like you, a while ago. Oh, you did, yes. His name, oh, he's a lovely old man. He had a beard and, of course, full of wisdom like old people are. And, thank you. And he just went down the street yelling, the Lord will come with ten thousand of his saints. They'd never seen a Bible. They'd never seen an altar. They'd never seen a priest. And here's a man bawling his head off. The Lord will come. You see, in the Old Testament, a prophet was called a seer, S-E-E-R, a seer. He could see what other men could not see. We've got lots of prophets in the country today. No, sirree, I don't agree with you. You know, the condition of America today would drive prophets up the wall. If we had prophets, do you know what they'd be doing? They'd be walking down the street with sackcloth on their feet. They'd be hollering against the sin of the generation. But nobody does it. Prophets now get little rooms and they tell you to come to their hotel and sit around. They'll give you some prophet that they have. Forget it. All they want to do is get you on the mailing list. I would to God we had some prophets. Again, I say the condition of America today. How many million alcoholics do we have? Ten million. How many girls do we have at this moment with babies in their belly that are only kids themselves? Did you notice the other day, or two weeks ago, it said now amongst kids eight and nine years of age, they have syphilis and gonorrhea? You know, since 1973 in America alone, we put to death 25 million babies. I don't know what they tell people at these clinics, what you should tell this girl. Listen, you got rid of a baby. You'll see that baby face to face at the judgment seat. You'll hear the cry when you tore it out of the mother's womb. You'll hear it in eternity for a billion years. We pat the kids on the... Oh, it's not much. You just had a baby. Then she goes out and has another. The guy that gave her the baby doesn't get a hoot. He goes and gets another girl pregnant. But you see, it's a full stop one day. Maybe the greatest blunder that our generation has made is that we left Jesus Christ at the crossroads 2,000 years ago. No siree. He's at the end of the road. He's waiting for every man. He's waiting for Prince Charles. I had a man sitting at our table the other day that talks with Prince Charles. Lovely guy, he says. Well, brother, he's going to the judgment seat. What do you think of this guy? I'll never think of his name again. Sadie? Sadam. Sadam Insane. Thank you. Do you think he ever dreamed he was going to stand at the judgment seat? Do you think that, um... What do you call that? Playboy in Congress now? His brother was president. Oh, Kennedy. Do you think Kennedy ever thought he was going to meet that girl, little... What was her name? A Chappaquiddick. A Chappaquiddick? That he's going to meet her at the judgment seat? Surely she didn't drown because there was no... There was no water in her lungs. There was a baby in her belly or whoever put it there. He's going to meet God at the judgment day? You know, if the Bible said all the Catholics are going to be judged by the Pope, they might get away with it. If it said all the Mohammedans are going to be judged by Mohammed, they'd get away with it. If all the Buddhists were judged by Buddha, they'd get away with it. If all the other guys were judged by their leaders, they'd get away with it. But listen, the Pope's going to have to stand at the feet of Jesus Christ. Buddha's going to stand there. Confucius is going to stand there. And Jimmy Shregger's going to stand there too. And all these other rascals. Not that Shregger's necessarily a rascal. He's just a bit crazy. Isn't it amazing that when a man has 20 years of ministry to build the greatest ministry in the world, that for a few minutes of pleasure he gets his name in history as number one failure? There's his building with his name on top. God in heaven. How does he walk down the street? I'd never show my face again. I'd bury myself in the dust and repent till there is skin fell off my body if need be. What do you think that little guy's doing now that used to smirk so much on PTL? He's in jail this morning. Do you think he's happy he used to have two Rolls Royces? You talk about sin being deceitful? The man that commits sin never thinks about the end of the line. He's going to stand one day at the judgment seat of Christ. But notice, they were married and given in marriage until the day that Noah entered the ark. Now look at him again. What do you think happened? He had a wife. He had six children. He comes in one day. They sit down to a meal. And one of his children says, Daddy, I just came up through the square there. There were some men drinking and talking and they said, Hey, look at that kid. That's one of Noah's kids. They were saying, Daddy, you're crazy. One man says, I've listened to that man 50 years ago. Another man says, My grandfather used to listen to him. And what's happening? Why did he hang on? America isn't going to get out of this mess by any manipulation of Mr. Bush or anybody else. Only one thing will save us. That's a Holy Ghost revival. You're not going to turn all these rotten marriages around and mismarriages and corruption and jails and all the other things by any legislator. Only a Holy Ghost revival will do it. God's going to have to make new men and new women out of the thing. It's a very dark day in which we're living. Do you know why? How many have read the book This Present Darkness? Somebody already? Did you read the second one after that? I didn't read either of them because they're fiction. Do you think it's something funny? Is it fiction to talk about Sodom and Gomorrah? Sodom is England. Gomorrah is America. Okay, come on. What did Jesus say? It will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in that day than for you. What about America? If I were to ask you right now, take your pencil and paper and write on a piece of paper, How many Bible schools are there in America and Canada? We're on the same continent. How many Bible schools are there? And then how many seminaries are there? What would you put? Well, I'll tell you. Because I checked with Billy Graham's office, they can't give me the exact number. There are 450 Bible schools in America and Canada and there are 250 seminaries. That's 700. But dear God, if they turned out one man on fire for God a year, that would be 700. But they don't. We turn them out year after year after year after year with a diploma. Stretch their heads, their hearts are shrunken with depending more on education than revelation. And only God the Holy Ghost can take hold of men like he did that young policeman. He has no theological background, but he has a love for souls. He said, I came down, he came all the way from Canada to pray for a half a day and we prayed and he wept most of the time. Before that, two men came down with beards, Hamish men or Amish men, whatever you want to call them. You know, they were full of faith and love and they prayed and wept and said, Mr. Angel, there's nothing happening in the country. No, there isn't. We've got 500 evangelists in America. We haven't one revivalist. I talked with a young man in my office recently. I talked with two, one from Brazil and one from Paraguay and each of them been standing in a meeting. I don't know, how many of you have heard the man called Anaconda? Do you know Anaconda? Anaconda is a, what's he called? Yeah, but what nation is he? I think he's Argentine. Anyhow, he had a firm $4 million business making nuts and bolts and the Lord told him to drop it. So he did. You know, all they do in Buenos Aires or somewhere, they get to the radio and say, listen, Anaconda will be 10 miles out of town tonight and you're all welcome to go. It's a beautiful air-conditioned building with marvelous modern lights, a 10-piece band, everything. Forget it. You know what it is? It's a field. There's nowhere to sit. You stand. You listen in the sticky heat of South America with 20 to 30,000 people a night. It doesn't have to whimper at the end. There's room at the cross for you. Forget it. There's no room at the cross. Get on the cross. You're trying to crouch at the cross and think it'll do something and so you're not changed. We're not changed by going to the cross. We're changed when we get on the cross. So they go to Anaconda's meeting. What happens? The Holy Ghost comes. He doesn't say, let's have a healing line here and ask some questions. Nobody goes to his meeting and comes back saying it's not faith healing, it's fake healing. They come back delivered. They come home pushing their wheelchairs. They come home carrying their spinal jackets. They come home with their leg irons in their hands. He's only a young man. But, you know, as I've said to you before more than once, one day somebody's going to read this Bible and believe it. When they do, we'll all be embarrassed. You see, we don't have men like that now. We're all in organization. Join this, join that, join something else. My dear friend, listen, this man, when he built his ark, I think he built it on the highest mountain or ridge he could find. And he warned them day after day, what do you think he did at night when he went home? Saying to his wife, now darling, you know, I had a rough day today. So a herd of cattle came past. The men were all mocking. They spit tobacco juice or something at me and said that old cloud. Why did he hang on? Because he gets in the greatest honor roll in the world. He gets in Hebrews 11 by faith knower. Mold with what? Fear. There's no fear anymore. There's no fear in the streets. There's no fear in the church. There's no fear in the pulpit. I guess if I asked you personally, one to one, do you believe Jesus may come this week? Yes. Well, listen, could you at this moment die and go straight into his presence? Have you got rid of all your grudges, all your bitterness? The scripture says when we come, we shall be like him. Not we shall have two hours notice to get ready. No sirree. If you believe that Jesus Christ is coming, you know, people say to me, I heard you last night and that message really, it changed my life. Well, listen, there's only one proof it changed your life and that is it changes your lifestyle. You don't need as much as you used to do. You don't need all the rotten things that the world has. I want to labor this little point here a minute. Remember this man goes in his ark. It's not very pretty. It's not very beautiful. I don't really paint it in a fancy color. All he did was he cut the wood and he stacked it up and people said, what if it's going to be made a boat? What like? Well, it had no sails because he wasn't there to sail. It had no rudder. He wasn't there to be guided. It wasn't going to be tossed about with every wind of doctrine. It's going to be guided by God. It's going to be filled with God's people. Nobody got in that ark who wasn't really saved, he would say. When they got in they were saved. What did they do? They were fleeing from the wrath to come. So this man, at the end of the day, what did he do? He said to his wife, well, darling, you know, I've been witnessing down in the town square now for 45 years. They don't take any notice. They just ridicule and smear. Do you know what we do, darling? I'll tell you what, I'm getting a bit bored. Let's have a picnic. Let's take the kids out and have a good time. Do you know what the life support is of most homes now? The TV. TV means terrible vision or terribly vicious or tunnel vision or trite and vulgar. But it dominates most homes. I was at a place recently, a funeral. It wasn't a friend of mine, but I had to go to a funeral. There's a lady there, very gorgeous dress, goes naturally, grey hair, very nice. And somebody asked about your children. Oh, how are your children? Oh, well, she said, the girl, of course, is 19, my boy is 17. Oh, what are they doing? And she said, they belong to this club and that club and the racket club and something else. Wonderful. But they have a real bad habit. What is it? When they come home at night, they watch TV till early hours of the morning. So the fellow said offhand, why don't you pull the plug? She said, what? They're college kids. Pull the plug and have a riot. 17 years and 19 years of age and they need a babysitter. People don't keep the wolf from the door. Now they bring her in. You need to tell your kids to flee from the wrath to come. You're piping devilish stuff every moment. They watch it. It's searing their minds. You're feeding their secret appetite. This one has no entertainment. He's cutting wood for the ark. I think he'll be there that old saw he had and he's sawing that wood day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, decade after decade, century after century almost. And he's stacking it high up and he knows he's making a casket for them, a lifeboat for himself. I think if you heard him zipping through that wood, you'd have heard the groaning of his spirit knowing more than they knew. Seeing, you know, he visualized every day as he looked out, the valley would be full of water and what would happen? Why, there'd be bodies floating everywhere. The very people who scorned and ridiculed and mocked him. Well, how in God's name do you think America's going to get by? Again, I remind you, we've 450 Bible schools in America and Canada and 250 seminaries, that's what 700. How are we going to get by? How many radio stations in America? I think there are 3,000 radio stations in America who at some point or another give 5 or 10 minutes to the gospel every day. How many thousands of books do we have? How many Christian magazines do we have? All piling up judgment against us. God makes it as difficult as he can for you to go to hell but you'll go, some of you. You'll go home and say, that guy stirred me a minute and you'll forget all about it. It's a dark world we live in, do you know why? When I was a boy, six, five years of age, I'd take my daddy's hand and say, Daddy, please take me to the army. I meant the Salvation Army. We'd go down the street, there was a Salvation Army. They all wore odd clothes, they handed them down. You'd see a fellow with a coat down to his legs that only went up to his knees, a little guy. And they wore, they called them a brass band, they said. Well, they were brass. The instruments didn't have any silver, they were brass and they were all from the pawn shop. They'd beaten up and you know, but boy, they'd stand there and blow and have a wonderful time. So we went to that street meeting. I could tell you where they'd be Saturday night. I could leave the Salvation Army street meeting, go a mile down the road and there the Pentecostals had a street meeting. Go into another area and there the Methodists had a street meeting. Go to another area and the Baptists had a street meeting. In other words, there was a light everywhere but those lights have gone. There's no street witnessing anymore. Oh, we'd give out a few tracts but that's not a street meeting. Jackie, she said, well, by the way, if anybody can have revival, all you have to do is go live with them. Don't go and, like she goes down the back alley at night and steps this way because there's human excrement there and she tries to get the other way, there's a dead body there. She goes here, there's a harlot. Do you know there are women on the streets of Hong Kong, 60 years of age that have prostituted for 45 years? You can't get a needle in their arms. You can't get a needle in their legs. They'd stick a needle in the rump of the woman and push it out to earn the money at night. It's the biggest hellhole in the world, almost except Amsterdam. Why women have been in Amsterdam 10 years and done nothing? Youth with a mission. No, I'm looking for youth and ambition. Ambition to be holy and ambition to be separate from the world. And ambition to be totally Christ, to live, move and have our being in God. To say goodbye to the world, to say goodbye to a career, to say goodbye to fame. A man was in my house the other day telling me about his wonderful wife. She swims for the Olympic team in England. My daughter's 16, she's going to play for England at tennis. So what? Ever since my little boys were little and I was away so often, my precious Martha would read them stories, missionary stories at night about Sammy Morris and others. So they grew up with a desire for the mission field and I'm glad they've been there. All the three of them at one time or another. You know there's a note saying only one life to soon be passed? What's the other say? Only one? Do you know the other part? Oh, OK. Well, it's misquoted. Only one life to soon be passed. Only what's done for God will last. But then the latter is this. And when I am dying, how glad I shall be if the lamp of my life has been burned out for thee. In God's name, I don't understand why many are having meetings. I don't understand why the Southern Baptists can have a meeting in the last three or four days. I don't understand why many are having crusades today. Why, in God's name, the people in America have written a hundred times in the street and we're doing exactly what people did to know we won't listen. If I were a Protestant Pope, I'd close every church down for at least two weeks for prayer and fasting. That bloody monster is going to come before very long and then we'll change our tune. All we have to do is get the first shipload of cargo planes with a cargo of corpses. Do you think a young lady gets a piece of paper and says, I just got this from the White House. It says, my husband died for his country. I'm going to keep this and let the country see it. I'm going to sleep with it in my pajamas tonight. I won't have my husband. I'll tell the children in the morning, your daddy's rotting somewhere. The birds are eating him in the Middle East. But we've got this from the White House. Do you think there's any comfort? I've lived through two of them. I remember one night the Germans came and blasted our area. I got in my little car and I drove up to where I'd been living before and it was roped off and the policeman said, Mr. Rainer, you can't go in here. I said, I must do. Some of my people in my church, he said, but look, the street isn't there. The whole block had gone. The bomb dropped and blasted it. We've got the biggest army and navy and air force in the world. We can't get one man out of that country. We couldn't get Noriega out of Panama. There's a limitation. But I'm scared about this brute that you have now. I think he's got so much planted in this country that at least twenty-five places in England where they know bombs can explode, all he has to do is give the word. You don't need an atom bomb as big as this. You can get an atom bomb. You can put it in a suitcase. It will blow a district away. He's going to start terrorism like we haven't known before unless some miracle happens. And it's not going to happen by Mr. Bush saying we'll do this and do it. It's going to happen when we humble ourselves before God. What does 2 Chronicles 7, 14 say? It's my people. That's not all Americans. It's the people in America There are two nations in America. There's the American and then there are people in America that the Bible says ye are a royal priest to the holy nation. We're a nation inside of nation. We don't live according to the rules of this country. We live better than that. We don't talk according to the rules of this country. We don't want all the paraphernalia. As I've said to you before when you get the joy of the Lord you don't need entertainment. The more joy you have in the Lord the less you need entertainment. Joy What did Wesley say? Thou old Christ art all I want more than all envy I find. Why does Jackie Pullinger stay with that rotten corruption for 24 years? When she came in the house Martha said to her Jackie what's your biggest problem living in that lovely culture at home you had in England? I mean she could be riding to the hounds every day mixing with society. Oh she smiled she said well Martha dear the biggest problem I have is I had when I got to Hong Kong was sharing my bedroom with a Chinese woman for 18 years. She said I like privacy I like people I like public people I love to get with the people but I like to be private sometimes. I have a Chinese woman in the house old enough to be my mother she's lived in vice all her life she can't speak hardly English and she wants she's just getting over all the sinfulness of her life and here's a society a young lady as pure as a lily that Christ has cleansed and she's living at the side of this wicked warped wild woman and enjoys it because she does it for Christ sake. You know everyone of us here this morning are part of the problem or we're part of the answer so we all the witnesses have gone out of the streets there's no more street meetings ok many churches don't have a prayer meeting that's died many most churches in America don't have a Sunday night meeting that's died and you don't have a light in your home the family light has gone where is the bible where do you read the word of God how often you take all the children together it's dark in the street it's dark in the church why should it be dark in your home it's dark in the lighthouse white house it's dark in God's house does it have to be dark in your house and mine I said this man wasn't building a canoe for fun he's making a place where people can come but they didn't bother to come he says they bought they sold they planted they building until the very day he entered into the ark you see he could see before anybody else he could see the light he could hear the thunder in his heart he was tuned in to God and they couldn't but what happened when the first peal of thunder went what happened when the first part of the ground ripped open and water shot into the air when people look round and they're terrified a man tries to get on a horse and he goes so far water comes up to the belly of the horse he goes up the hill water falls up the hill and they follow along everything surrounding the boat Noah built everything in that ark it was made of wood typical of the cross it had a special covering which is typical of the blood of Christ and there is it doesn't matter about the storm people say we won't go through the tribulation he went through the tribulation what happened he's sitting there I didn't check with this I think it says that he sat there for seven days before the flood really broke on him what do you think people outside would say hey come out we'll forgive you we'll forgive you oh we won't mock you anymore we know you're a good man and we don't want you to die it must smell in the ark it didn't smell in the ark it was pure inside the ark because God controlled it but as soon as the water came they were beating at the side of the ark saying open to us open to us open us and he never opened it the fact is when he went in the ark he never stepped out again I don't hear him standing on the side of the ark and talking to the other people on the side of the road and saying listen you know time is nearly running out I've been here over a hundred years now you better get ready there's not much they took no notice of him it's exactly the same today we have six hundred million bibles in America how many do you think get read every day how many churches do you think we have we're supposed to have over two hundred thousand evangelical churches in America we've got people printing our bibles who never read them people print our hymn books never sing them people who see a cross on a building don't care a hill of beans about it they go to a funeral and see a cross in the yard they don't care a bit about it we're exactly where Jesus says as it was in the days of Noah but this fellow could not be quietened if you leap over the centuries you have a little man that's a broken body he limps his eyes are torn his body's torn he's been whipped and ripped he's been in weariness in fasting in pain for us in death he's been he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been he's been whipped he's been whipped whipped he's been he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been he's been whipped he's been he's been whipped whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been whipped he's been he's been whipped he's been whipped whipped he's been whipped he's been you say oh no i hope not we've just got a new car we've just got a new building but if you really love him you'll say lord jesus am i going to see you i'm going to see those hands you sang that hymn this morning that terrible english hymn what's it what oh to grace how great is that that last verse is scandalous thrown to wonder lord i feel it how many of you men are married raise your hand please okay put them down how many of you have another woman no hands but that's what you told jesus this morning you said prone to wonder lord i feel it oh i follow you on sundays for an hour but oh i do love sports sunday afternoon i prayed 10 minutes in the morning i watch football all afternoon oh i'm so glad there's there's high school football friday night there's college football saturday there's other big junk football sundays and more junk football monday night you know the king of america the king of america is sport and his queen is called entertainment and they root between them they get more royalties we get more time they get more adoration then jesus gets until you and i get drunk with the spirit of god and when a man's drunk he doesn't get a hill of beans i remember the first day of in scotland the man came up to me drunk at night in the dark and he's who are you so i said i gave him my name he says i'm sandy mctavish can you fade i said no i can't fight can you sing no i can't sing then he went down the list of things he could do he could fade he could sing and then he put his hand in his pocket and he gave me a handful of silver now when a scotsman does that you know he's drunk but isn't it the same when you and i've been redeemed from the curse of sin you see so many of these young people that this precious woman meets and i'll say two things and go she said brother i said it must be marvelous to sit down with a whole row of prostitutes she said brother in them i get the elites of hong kong the multimillionaires sit there the poor sit here and the judges of the high court sit there and she said i look and i see a prostitute of that judge sent to prison 20 times i see a man just out of jail of the man sent there and there they are sitting together worshiping but i said well it must be wonderful to teach them it's wonderful what they teach me i said teach you you're a graduate you've traveled the world you know everything and everybody how could you learn here i'll tell you what i learned she said i had a man came to me he was a vilest of the vile he was twisted and debauched he had no conscience he had no peace he had no fear of man fear of god no respect no anything he's just just a rotten bag of corruption and he came to my meeting and he got wonderfully saved and then after he got saved he got full of the spirit he spoke in tongues he ministered for two or three years and everybody said you know he used to be the problem in the hong kong and now look at him and then suddenly he went back down through the hole she'd pick up the newspaper and she'd read in the newspaper that this man again was in trouble he'd been in a murder he'd been in rape and so forth and she just about gave up hope there's a knock at the door of her house and when she went here let's call him jack i said hi jack he said jackie please i want to talk oh well he said you know me sure he said i've been a very bad boy i know i know i've read your record every day in the mail in the newspaper well he said i want to tell you i did i i got married then i deserted my wife and child then i got another woman and lived with her then i left her then i got with another gang of thieves and he went on with his history and but he said three months ago in jail the lord came in mercy to me and i got down there and confessed my sin and asked him to cleanse me asked him to put his holy spirit in me and he said you know what i've lived i've lived this last three months in joy in victory i don't want sin i don't want women i don't want drunkenness i don't want money i'm a new man in christ she said well that's wonderful but he said jackie i want to tell you something do you know in the last three months i've been in jail i've cried two hours every night and he said she said i rushed to his and said put my hands on him and said listen jack you don't need to do that your sins it doesn't matter whether it's perversion or what it is it's all forgiven you don't need to cry over it he said i'm not crying over that you're not crying over your sin no what are you crying for he said i'm crying over the fact that for 10 years after i got so marvelously cleansed then for 10 years i denied god the right to my mind the right to my lips the right to my heart the right to use me i shot god out of my life and when i think of that it's worse than when i was when i'd been all night with a woman it's worse when i they carried me home drunk it's worse than coming out of fighting drugs i should god out of my life how much you should get out of your life you watch stinking tv has it done any good you watch football a few minutes get excited then what we've got to have a new breed of christian i'm not thinking about what some of these guys talk about new breed of men if any man is in christ he's a new creature he's a new heart he has a new will he has new desires he has new inspirations he can trample the world of flesh and the devil under his feet and in this wicked world in which you live you can live in purity and peace and power i said two things here's the last one there's a fellow called is it tony campola what's what's his name you know him campola i picked up book of his the other day and i i i don't go for that kind of evangelism too much but anyhow he was mentioning a friend of his was in a train in london and you know people in london live 40 50 miles out at night they say well goodbye old boy i'll see you in the morning in the 8 15 so this fellow goes to catch the 8 15 and two very smart englishmen got in in the train with a three-piece suit and of course opened the london times they'd been traveling about 10 minutes one of them suddenly slumped to the ground he had an epileptic fit and he was foaming at the mouth and fighting and then biting his lip and the other man got his coat off and put it under his head and for the next 40 miles to London he attended him he ran and got some water and helped him and little by little got the man back to his sanity and sat him on a seat and the man sat there in the corner half asleep dozing and this american said he said sir i want to thank you for that he said uh it's something to see a man take off his coat and get down on the floor dusty floor and help a man in a mess like that that was lashing out he could have knocked your head off as it were given your black eye and he said he said i'd never seen compassion like that i've never seen love like that he said other people would have just you get out to the side there's a corridor they've gone into the next seat in the next room no no no he said wait a minute he said well you saw what happened he said you know he has three attacks like that every day he said i'm not english i'm american and he said i was in vietnam and he said we were shot down in the bush and he said my body was riddled with shrapnel i had a bullet in my shoulder and he said i was near dying and this man this man that i just looked after in this railway train he picked me up slung me over his shoulder and he staggered through the bush and he staggered through streams and i i was all bloody and he was he was exhausted and finally he dropped me and some men took me up and rendered first aid he said but for that man i will be dead he said do you realize i can't do i'll tell you what i did he said when i heard about this condition in england in america i sold my house i sold my business i bought the money over here and as long as he lives i'll be there to take care of him now that's love that's devotion it's a it's easy to sing isn't it we're the whole realm of nature mind don't sing it again you're lying you won't give him wednesday night for the prayer meeting you watch tv we're the whole realm of nature mind that were a present far too small you've only one life it won't be long sure i'm getting up in years oh i hope i live a couple more years anyhow but i look back i have one regret the only regrets is i never wasted much money i've had much to waste maybe i've wasted time but you know this bible gets more precious every day i get into it it blesses me it saturates me my dear martha and i read the bible and books every day of our lives you see eternity is a very very long while we're not going to heaven for the weekend this christmas you'll hear on radio tv uh what do they call it hamlet's messiah and he shall reign forever and ever king of kings and lord of lords he missed one thing off and judge of judges we're going to meet him at the judgment seat of christ as it was in the days of nord is it like that today read the last part when you go home read the last part there of uh what's the book before revelation sam jude the book of jude i read it i'm through what's the chapter okay i therefore put you in remembrance how that once ye once knew this come on be honest right now how many of you once had a richer experience of god than you have now raise your hand halfway up you once had a ritual walk a closer walk with god you said mr randy i lost my you didn't lose it you left it you didn't lose it you left it when the choice was reading your bible or watching tv you deliberately watch that dirty whore on tv that you know she's been married umpteen times she's the face of an angel and the morals of an alley cat why do you want to watch that junk a lover is very jealous you can't have love without jealousy and god is jealous and i have some young men i pray for and i'm jealous for them i've got two young men that pray with me every morning from two from midnight till two o'clock one lives on the border of montana came to see me the other day with four little children in the back of a beaten up truck he wouldn't give me a dollar for it well i wouldn't anyhow and i'm generous and it come down all that way over 2 000 miles just to say thank you for writing a book that changed my life and he said i'll tell you what every night you pray at 12 i'll be praying 12 to 2 another man came and i didn't ask him he said mr randy now i pray from 12 o'clock to 2 he said i'm getting into the word i'm finding the word of god richer i'm finding christ is living what's the good of saying he lived 2 000 years can you go to your office and say to them christ lives in me would they believe you that's the miracle of miracles this wealthy man came to see me the other day and just to finish he said this i said to him well brother the trouble with the church today it doesn't have a message you see it talks there about fornication there are no more fornicators among young people now they're just sexually active there are no adulterers they're just having an affair they're no depraved people are just deprived we've changed all the vocabulary our vocabulary has no teeth it's always you made a mistake no you didn't you insulted god every time you sin you drive the nails back in the arms of christ the hands of christ okay this young man says can i do more for the man who dragged me carried me on his shoulder through the bush when bullets were whistling over us snipers were there and my blood is running with the rain that's on me and his blood is running and he struggles and struggles for three days for christ spent three days in the grave that he may rise and then cleanse and sanctify that life of yours who owns it is your tv station on it does christ own it are you self-controlled or are you christ controlled as it was in the days of noah they bought they sold they planted they build it until the very day that noah entered into the ark fort worth and dallas has over 1 million square feet of unrented office space and we're still making more we're building and building and building it's always going to come not today yes it will now god didn't bring me here bring you here in fact during the week i didn't think i'd make it i had a terrible week physically martha said darling you'll be all right once the lord comes i don't know it's true and the strength came god didn't bring the brother who's the brother from california good what's his name oh joseph oh dennis did you go to did you go to seminary and that's all the memory you have i'm glad i didn't go come on now either you're rejoicing that you're in the ark you're quite sure because you're walking obedience this morning you're reading the word you make love to the lord jesus every day of your life and you can really say not in a sentimental song but you really say he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me i'm his own my friend told me the other day i woke up to prince charles is home he lives in kensington palace so what is he could really do to live in a palace won't help you but when we have christ within not christ somewhere on the outside but christ liveth in me i not only give him my sins i give him my life i give him my ambition i give him my hopes that he may live and move and have his being in me and god wants that house of yours how many of you daddies do not have a family also raise your hand come on be honest about it you don't read the bible every day to your children some of you good will you do it after today will you do that every day good by the grace of god i'm here because my daddy every day took the bible and prayed for me at 14 years of age he took me to a night of prayer wouldn't i have seen my daddy big hefty guy with his coat off sweating and praying and weeping i remember distinctly one day at dinner on sunday my sister said to my daddy but daddy why do you say grace and weep and you weep every time you pray he said well years ago i asked god to give me a heart like jerry meyer and he said i believe i've wept every day of my life since i can no more imagine a prophet without tears and i can imagine a bird without wings some of these prophets are better get straightened out not running around with a title a prophet has a broken heart he sees what nobody else can see and the people don't understand what he sees i see judgment coming so quickly on america how much longer is god going to wink at our abortion do you think how much more wrong longer 10 000 young people were killed driving cars last year you don't find course saying 90 percent of drinking cause me when they'll kill it all will come out listen we've got to live in purity and if you're sensible you want purity the pure in heart shall see god not only seem ultimately but seem now it's a delight it's a rapturous delight to really this very day know consciously that we've passed from death unto life we're not with noah's gang out there we're not scorning we're embracing the word we're loving the christ of god we're loving the will of god father we do pray for those dear soldier fellows roasting in the sun today lord i pray that somehow miraculously revival might start amongst them i hear they don't have chaplains now they have moral lectures lord work work a work of grace in their hearts and even at the other side those poor heathen soldiers without any hope of eternity and yet they're all ready to die oh lord have mercy on america we've sinned and sinned we've broken your laws we break your sabbath day and we do it with impunity we do it without sorrow we do without regrets i'm not going to ask you to come forward making this decision i'm going to ask you as god sprung to your heart will you go home and do some repenting at home today will you go and apologize to god for how little you've prayed how little you've read the word how little you've witnessed how little you've let your light shine i want to pray for you now and pray for you as i go home if you say brother aniel i want to be returned to my first love i want that love of the word i want that love for prayer i want that love for witness i want to be a true disciple as i say i'm not going to ask you to kneel and pray you say all right brother and i'll go home and i'll get quiet with the lord and i'll get that cleansing i believe in to meet my needs today will you do that nobody will see you raise your hand so i know to pray for you thank you many hands well keep that vow you've made it not to me as our brother said that now it's not a vow to me it's a vow to the lord so again i ask you be gracious remember us in prayer we've got a big load and yet we're determined to do the will of god
