Hidden Treasure & Strange Gods & Mountain Peaks - Part 1
Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Sermon Transcription
This message has been recorded at Ebron, Hyderabad, on 24th October, 1965, at the arrival of the Lord's servant, Brother Bakshin, after serving abroad for a period of five months. The following message has been recorded in the Phillips set on track number four, speed one seven oblique eight. Supreme Heavenly Father, God of grace, mercy and peace, our faithful and our wonder working God, the covenant keeping God, the prayer answering God, God of eternity, God of glory. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, our highly exalted saviour, we do enter thy courts. We adore thee and bless thee and magnify thee for thy goodness which endureth forever. We thank thee for thy mercies which are sure and steadfast. We thank thee for thy promises which are so true. We thank thee for thy unchanging love. We thank thee for thy ways which are higher than our ways. We thank thee for thy grand and lofty purpose in saving us. We thank thee for keeping us upon the earth as eyewitnesses and mouthpieces and messengers. We thank thee for the joy given to us to live together in thy vineyard as co-workers. We thank thee for the honour given to us to take the gospel into different countries in thy name with thy help. We thank thee that thou hast wrought and accomplished in these past twenty-one weeks because of the prayers of thy saints. We thank thee that thou hast accomplished in Holland, England and France. We thank thee for the encouragement received in Denmark, Finland and Belgium. We thank thee for thou hast indeed accomplished in Switzerland and Germany. We thank thee for thy glory revealed in Yugoslavia. We thank thee for putting thy seal upon labours put forth in Lebanon. We thank thee for the response given by word in Kuwait and Doha, Dahan and Bahrain. We thank thee for every token of thy love received in these days. We thank thee for all the help given to give thy message account of respect and ease. We thank thee for the liberty enjoyed in fellowship and ministry. We thank thee for the journey must be granted. We thank thee for the fellowship enjoyed with thy saints. We thank thee for every new open door. We thank thee for giving unto us a better entrance for thy word into other countries. We thank thee for many who are burdened of need to intercede and prevail for this ministry in these past weeks day and night. They be abundantly rewarded. The seeds won't be watered by thee. The work begun will be deepened and perfected by thee. Give unto us greater burden of prayer and for those responsible for the follow work. Thank thee also for all the help given by servants over here for their manifold duties and responsibilities. We thank thee for the joy given to us to meet again in thy name. Lord, make our joy full. Make our time fully profitable. You paid us for the coming holy convocation. By faith we bind up our darkness. We come under pressure of blood. And pray in the name of Lord Jesus of Australia. I do pray to God for this again and again. Lord has kept his word and done great things according to his promise given. I won't make any attempt now to tell you what he has done. Leave that till tomorrow evening, God willing. You can be fully benefited by what we have to share with you. I can just say in a few words, Lord has indeed kept his word and done much more than we could ask or think or imagine. So what a joy it is to obey the Lord and follow him when he speaks to us. So only as we obey the Lord and follow him step by step, then we know the honour we have to serve him and follow him. There is much to be shared and much to be said. So I thought it would be much better to leave it till tomorrow evening when we are all together and still on the time. In every place I have been, I have been giving your greetings to the believers in those parts. And they have been also requesting me with tears, with much thankfulness to also thank you for your prayers on their behalf. So I must also honour their wish and convey to you their very very warm loving greetings and thanks for your prayer on their behalf. It has been a very busy time and a very encouraging time. I got to Holland on the 29th of May. Now I was very busy here on the 27th and Bombay on the 28th. Now most awake whole night on the way to Holland. So I thought only to have one day free in Holland that day. And after we had a time of prayer, we had three meetings. That was on the 29th. It has been like this ever since. Not a single day free. Yet Lord has been so good and so gracious in every place in every meeting. Now when we are conscious how Lord has gone before in every place and how He undertook for the journey and the ministry in the state. Lord helps us, I want to share with you some more details on these past weeks of blessing and fellowship. That is tomorrow evening. This evening also we have meeting for the ministry but for the sharing purpose it is tomorrow evening. Now for the message please, book of Deuteronomy. Book of Deuteronomy and chapter 32. We shall read together a few verses. Book of Deuteronomy and chapter 32. Book of Deuteronomy and chapter 32. We shall read together a few verses. Shall we pray once again? Loving Father, in the name of Lord Jesus Christ, we thank Thee for Thy living Word. Thank Thee for Thy Word. Thank Thee for Thy Word. We thank Thee for Thy Word. We thank Thee for Thy Word. and more real. As we feel led to share our experiences of the past twenty-one years, tomorrow evening with ICS over here, do bid us also for that occasion tomorrow. May Jyotish Kriti Yuga has in the heart to accomplish, be fully accomplished. Thank thee for thy word preached to Palakshati, to our dear ones in Punjab and Kashmir in these past days. Thank thee for the moving of the ICS in many parts of the country. Thank thee for the protection given to our dear ones wherever they were in danger. Thank thee for all the help given to us so far for the work of preparation for the Holi Convocation. Now we shall give up the waste for the remaining days of preparation. And also I claim thy everlasting comfort for my sister in Delhi whose husband passed away on the 5th of last month, this month. Thy way is perfect. May she be given thy will. Thank thee also for the savour shown to Mrs. Mahamidas in touching her. May she be given extra strength. Thank thee also for Mrs. Paul during her operation. She also might be given extra strength, physical weakness. Also we claim thy promise of Mrs. Rajaratnam, her need, and the Rajamani in Madras. We claim a healthy confinement for Sister Mary Christopher who will help us how to bear the burden of each other. Keep us at the pressure of blood. We pray in the name of Savior. Book of Deuteronomy 7.32 and verse 12. So the Lord alone did lead him and there was no strain God with him. The Lord alone did lead him and there was no strain God with him. In these few verses together, from verse 7 to verse 14, we have God's plan for those who are led by Him. How to move this? God was reminding His people His purpose for them before they entered the Promised Land. It is very, very easy for all of us to forget the blessing which we received in the past. And also it is still more easy to forget that purpose for which we have been saved by His grace. Whatever Lord has done for us is for a purpose. It is good to know more and more that grand and lofty purpose for which we have been saved by Him and sought by Him. So you find how our eyes are only upon what we need and what we require. There will be common weakness of these people in the wilderness and also afterwards. Nobody wanted God when they were in need, when they were in trouble, when they were in distress. But when they requested God, do you know what they did? They have prayed on the sword again and again, they forgot and then talked to the stained God. Now any object, any person, any desire, any association which does lessen our joy and weaken our faith is a stained God in the Bible. You find that word stained God many times in Genesis and Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Remember God had blessed Jacob yet He could not bless him further, afterwards. Because there was some stained God still with him. See Genesis chapter 35 Genesis chapter 35 and verse 2 Then Jacob said unto his household, All that was with him, put away the stained God that is among you and be clean and change your garments. Verse 4 And they gave unto Jacob all the stained God which was in their hands and all their earrings which were in their ears. And Jacob did hit them and the oak which was my she-camel. And they journeyed and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them and did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. Even though in the previous chapter God had wonderfully and abundantly blessed Jacob. But God has still much more to give him than he could imagine. And thus we also failed. We do not realize how much more we have yet to receive from our loving Savior. Now whatever you have received in the past is nothing as compared with the one in the name of the future. Now God has wonderfully met Jacob in chapter 32. He changed his name to Israel Prince. And now he saw how God began to work on his behalf and he saw others became his friends. Now there was a great danger again on the part of Jacob to be satisfied with only that blessing. Because he saw God's future face. And God called him a prince. And God said, Now you are my prince and you are born with me and man. That is why when he came to Shechem there he made an altar called El Elohim Israel. That we will guard that God with him. But now God has much more to give him than other blessings. That is why God spoke to him in the beginning. God said to Jacob, Arise, go to Bethel and dwell there and make an altar to God. Now see, God had to bring him to the right place, in a proper place where he could meet with him and also bless him. In Shechem he had become very prosperous. No lack in material things. Plenty of cattle, plenty of other possessions that he needed. Yet God knew that he was before him still a poor spiritually. So he commanded him I will leave this place and come to Bethel. The very same place that God had met him in Genesis 28 chapter. And yet himself had given the name Bethel to that place. Even he himself gave that name Bethel. He never knew the meaning of it. So he is living far away from Bethel. But Bethel was a place where God had to bless him fully. And that's why unless he comes back to Bethel he cannot receive the blessing that God has for him. Then you know Bethel means house of God. And for Jacob till that time it was only a place where he could rest. And still he asked so he had to get respect for that place. Because God had appeared to Jacob at that time as he was running away from home. There he had seen heaven open and the ladders joining after the heaven. He had seen angels ascending and descending. And also he had God speak to him. Yet he never understood the real meaning of God's house. So only for him a place of sentiments just to think that so many years ago God spoke to that place. And that's how many people regard the house of God. They are much more attached to building rather than the meaning of the place. They don't know what God's house is. Even though they might give plenty of money to build buildings in the name of Lord Jesus Christ. They may even come in the place of worship to take part in a meeting or fellowship. And yet if possible they may be fully benefited from the blessing God has for us in the battle of the house of God. God is saying Jacob you come back to battle. Only when you come over there there I can fully bless you and speak with you and talk to you and show you more clearly my purpose for you. And then Jacob began to search his heart. First two. Then Jacob was sent to household all that was with him. Put away the stain God that is among you and be clean and change your garments. Now what is changing? After so many years he discovers that there are some stain God hidden somewhere in his own family. How could they have been hidden from him all these years? His own wives were keeping these images with a stone from their father's house. And they were doing many things which was somewhat suspicious in character. And that time Jacob never thought much about it. Because they were somewhat kept covered from him. Now some women can be very clever in covering something. I am not talking about this over here. But generally speaking the good and the bad when they want to cover they can cover something. And when you want to uncover equally very clever. Both ways they can do everything. Now here you find Jacob's wives extremely clever. And you know they were using those images by worship for all these years. But Jacob never thought about it. But that day he gave the command. He became strong that day. Now there was no use to compromise. How did it happen? God spoke to him. Now Jacob you must come to battle. And unless you come over there I am not going to bless you fully. Now Jacob there is something wrong in your family. And that time he began to see there were some stain jars here and there in the household. And there was some uncleanness. Some deformity over there. Put away the stain jars. And change your garments. And be clean. And come along we must go to battle. Now God has commanded we must obey him. Unless we go to battle we cannot see our full share of the blessing. So that day the whole household of Jacob had to obey. And evidently the whole family was involved in those stain jars. His wife and the children maybe our servants too. Now what did he say also? Put away the stain jars and be clean and change your garments. Even the garments have to be changed. That's going to show how the stain jars can also give them a habit too. The garments in the bible always speaks of the habits of the human being. Now much can be revealed by man's clothes. Only you know how to study you can find out their character by the clothes they wear. Then watch very carefully in the color they use and how they change and how they go about. And you can find many of their habits revealed by the color and by the manner they go about. Now Jacob began to see how his family and children began to imitate the people around them. In a very subtle way the armies brought in the farmers in their midst through friendship association of all kinds. And it is saddest thing today in many western countries. How these good believers mass believers are being attracted and deceived carried away by the worldly clothes and worldly ways and the worldly habits. Then gradually they form habits and associations and practices which bring darkness in their minds and life after. Now Jacob gives the command put away stained doors change your garments and your habits and break away all these worldly friendships and whatever you put away should be clean clean in your conversation and your ways And we are told how these clothes were buried under you never to be again dug out Then they returned together to Bethel Result was it was five and they journeyed and the terror of God was upon the cities they were running about them and after the son of Jacob So Jacob came to Luz which is the land of Canaan that is Bethel he and all the people with him and he built there an altar and called the place El Bethel because dear God appeared to him when he fled from the face of the earth when he fled of the earth God appeared to him and he built there an altar and called the place El Bethel and God appeared to Jacob again when he came out of Palmyra and left him and God said to him thy name is Jacob thy name is shall not be called any more Jacob Israel give me thy name and he called his name Israel and God said to him I am God Almighty be good to multiply a nation and a country of nation shall be of thee and king shall come out of the land and God I am God Almighty be good to multiply a nation and a country of nation shall be of and king shall come out of and God I am God Almighty be good to multiply and a country of nation shall be of and king shall come the land and God I am God be good to a nation and a country of multiply a nation and a country of shall be of out of the land and God I am God Almighty be good to multiply a nation and a country of nation shall be of the land and God I am God Almighty be good to multiply a nation and a country of nation shall be of out of the land I am God be good to a nation and a shall be of out of the land and God I am God be good to a nation I am God be good to a nation and a country of the land and God I am God be good to and a country of and God I am God be good to be good to a nation I am God be good to a nation I am God be good to a nation and a country of and God I am God be good to and a country of the land and God I am God be good to a nation and a country of and God So when Jacob did obey God and all of them did obey His family at this time God was put away and buried completely The first result was the terror of God came around about them They never began to tremble because of their faith. See, in 1734, they were trying their best to drag them to their side. They told us, you stay with us, we give you our daughters, and you give us your daughters, you live among us, stay among us, then we can be all benefited. They said, you stay with us, you give us your daughters, you give us our daughters, you give us all our wealth, you live among us, and we will be all benefited. That was in 1734. In 1910. And make him married with us. Give your daughters unto us. Take our daughters unto you. He will dwell with us. Land shall be before you. Dwell, take it therein, and get thee a possession therein. See, what a subtle way they are dumping that. Because when they came over there, they were at that time only a stranger there. We will welcome you as one of us. We gladly give you our daughter, you give her your daughter. Then you will trade among us. And thus be prosperous and multiply. And that's why God is not able to ask us to work in the further. So instead of 35, God has spoken to Jacob, Jacob, don't make any compromise. When his son Jacob took a very strong stand, Jacob was somewhat offended. When his son Jacob took a very strong stand, Jacob was somewhat offended. This is chapter 34, verse 25. It came to pass, on the third day, when they were sold to sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dina's brothers, to give them sword. And came Manassehli boldly, and slew, and slew Hamor, and she-cam, his own son with the other sword. So both of them really were obeying God. Now further please, turning to verse 30. And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, you have troubled me to make me to stand among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites, and the Bedouins. I bring you a few in number. They gather themselves against me, and slay me. Why his son was so bold, Jacob was afraid. He said, now we have few in number. And if he takes a step, then these people are, they come against us. And that's how through some kind of fear, the enemy succeeded in coming into many homes and many families. So through worldly association, and worldly marriages, and worldly friendships, the enemy has ruined many homes. And that's why now God is speaking to Jacob in chapter 35. And he wanted to take him right away from there. Now Jacob, you don't stay any longer in she-cam. See, Jacob was almost tempted to stay there for some long time. Because he had already set away from Laban first, then from Esau. So he was saying, now let me live in peace for a while. God is saying, this is not a place for you. Even though she-cam is a lovely place, a good place. But God is saying, Jacob, you must come to Bethel. Is that the place of blessing for you? There are so many persons who keep away from the house of God for so many reasons. Now something, because for business sake, they have to keep away. That's their argument. We have to earn money, we have to support family, we have to look after seven children, and think of the house of marriage. And how are we going to look after seven children, and their education, and their future, and their marriage? With so many arguments, they keep away from Bethel house of God. Gradually, they cut down their time of fellowship and prayer in the house of God. In the beginning, they were so happy and so joyful. In the beginning, they were so happy and so joyful. But now, something has happened. There is some stained God in your heart. Your own business and your job also can become a stained God. You cannot rob God of His time. You keep away from the house of God, you are going to the land of famine. You are going to the land of famine. Naomi thought, by going away from Bethlehem, she will be more developed. And what happened to her? Lost her husband, lost her son also. Soon as she came back to Bethlehem, the place of bread, blessing, God blessed her. Away from Bethlehem, she is in sorrow and misery and bitterness. Coming back to Bethlehem, she is a grandmother of David. Oh, come back to Bethel. Don't keep away from Bethel. Don't let your worldly reasoning and arguments prevent you from pushing God out. However believing you are, however important you are, God has a first name over you. But only as you put away the stained God, then you begin to see what Bethel is. Well, Jacob came to Bethel. Then God appeared to him. And he spoke to him. And God appeared unto Jacob again. Oh, what a privilege! Now God is saying, Now, Jacob, I can speak with you more freely. Now, Jacob, I can love you freely. Now, I can bless you fully. Your heart and your home and your family is free from the stained God. Now, Jacob, what I said in chapter 28 so many years ago, now from today, I will fulfill it everything. Now, most of you have received promises from God's word during different times. Maybe some promises you were given at the time of New Year. Other promises you were given at other occasions. Now you are saying, Well, why did not God fulfill it in my case? I believe in them. And only for a short time they were true. But now the promises are not being fulfilled. Because of some stained God. And because you are still away from Bethel. That is why God cannot now fully bless you. But do not be deceived by the past blessings. Jacob had received plenty of blessings. But now God is saying, Jacob, I have much more, much more to give you. Understand, My God said, My name is Jacob. My name shall not be called any more Jacob. Smart is real. My God said, My name is Jacob. My name shall not be called any more Jacob. My name shall be called Israel. My name shall be called Israel. After 27 years, These words have become true to him now. God said to him 7 years ago, You are now the chief. But he is still going about like a beggar. God said, I want you to be a prince. But going by Jacob's garment and his face, he was still a beggar. That is what God is saying. Jacob, you are my prince. Be a prince. Do not be a beggar any more. Seven years later, he became a real prince of God. Seven years later, he became a real prince of God. Now he is going about like a prince. Now God is saying to Jacob, I am going to bring kings out of your lions. God, I am God Almighty. You work, a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee. Things shall come out of the land. And the land which I give to him, the land which I give it also. And these words became the spirit of Jacob that day. And that is why, before he passed away, he gave his sons all the blessings according to that. It is only from that day, he became God's prophet, he became God's king, God's friend. Now please, take this message for you. Put them in a chain, God. But only maybe put them in a chain, God. And break every friendship, association with God's word. And find out your full share in battle. And then you see what is the blessing of the Lord. I am the God Almighty. There is God's full power at your disposal. One could say, I am God Almighty. But behave like a coward. Some look very, very strong. But they are terrified by a mouse. They pass the TV also. You got to be a real priest before God. Then see, God's power, God does inform you about this. See now, what God does afterwards. Deuteronomy 32. 32? Verse 9. Now Lord's portion is his people. Jacob is the Lord of his inhabitants. Now Jacob became God's inhabitants. Now what a transformation. Now God is saying, Now Jacob, now you belong to me forever. Now to me, you are more precious than the whole universe. God never said that sun is a mind hater, moon is a mind hater, or star is a mind hater. And nor you can say that about any unbeliever. He can say about you. You are my inhabitants. But they are never to become God's inhabitants. That means, unto God, we become so precious. Verse 10. He found him in a desert land. That was our tradition. When he found us, like a desert. Extremely in that. Nothing anywhere. When you go to Arabia, see nothing about sand, sand, sand, sand for more than a month. Not even a single bit of ground. All sand. But additionally, they found out some oil well in the same sand. And now, the same sand is yielding two million dollars every day. That means one crore rupee every day. Coming from the sand only. Only sand before. Now you find a million crore coming out of it. Now, that's how your life can become. God finds us like a desert. And he brings from us the rivers out of the river water. Can I have a further please? 10th verse. He led him about. Verse 10. He led him. Then he instructed him. And he kept him near the apple of his eye. Why did you put a stain God? I say verse 12. Lord alone will lead him. There was no stain God with him. And that began to happen after the 36th of Genesis. From that day Lord began to lead him in stuff, him and whatever. And kept him near the apple of his eye. He became unto God so precious. Who shall have touched him? You shall have touched the apple of my eye. Then he got from you a protection. But never. And he gave a stable house next to a young man and taken them and laid them on a wing. He had lost a young man in a very high place. You never see an eagle nest on any low place. On the highest mountain. There they are nest. And if you want them to live they are very high. That is what God wants you to be. He wants you to be in high places. Where you can see things clearly. And an eagle does break the nest again and again. The young one may fly. They will not wake up at all. When they are born they are young only. Then come eagle if the hole has been broken. And the young ones are falling from nest. They may say our mother is so cruel. We are young. We can not fly so high. Mother came and she took the whole nest. They can not scream. Oh mother don't do it. Don't be so cruel. What happened to you? Are you mad? You are including the young one here and that we take our best. Then she took no notice. Nest was broken. They began to fall and she came underneath and carried them up again. Again she dropped them. Oh mother you are so unkind. Again she came underneath and carried them and that's how the young one learned to fly. And that's why God had to shake you also. Don't think you are kind. To make you to fly so high he must shake and shake and shake. Was 13. He made him ride on the high places of the earth. He made him eat in the trees of the field. Made him suck honey out of the rock. Made him suck gold out of Made him cook in the milk of sheep far brown land cow in the field. Now the kid with a cab in the mirror outside made him salad in a white yes from corner When I was in Yugoslavia, they used to bring seven meals, a big basket of grapes. Nice, very nice, thick grapes. For breakfast grapes, for lunch grapes, for tea grapes, for supper evening grapes. And that would be small quantity. Very big basket. So much for anybody. God is saying to you, He wants to give you everything in abundance and best. Provided you put me in the state of God. That's the only way of receiving full blessing. Oh don't let your friends and your relations and your children and your wife keep you away from Bethel. Or your business or any other occupation. The blessing is in Bethel. The blessing is in Bethel. I am the God Almighty. To lead you and to keep you and to feed you and to bless you. I will you call and read these verses at home as you go today. Deuteronomy 32. Then pray. Now Lord makes my experience. I want like that. Give me like that and put me in the state of God. And show me my share in Bethel. And speak with me. I am the God Almighty. He will bless you. And bless you much more. Shall we pray? Our loving Heavenly Father. In the name of Lord Jesus our Saviour. We are attending for the blessings which we can receive by thinking of Christian Bethel. We confess with shame how many of us have kept away from Bethel by all kind of reasoning, arguments, activities, how so good they may be. We have kept away from servitude of that place. We have failed to give our share in the prayer gatherings. We have not come in the same joy in your house. We have not taken courtesy or any servitude in your house. We have not got our share in Bethel. Because of the state of God. Oh God give us life and put us in the state of God. And king of governments. And be clean. We want thy full blessing. And thy terror to fall upon you around us. Lord bless us abundantly. And before we go home give us thy grace to confess everything. That is my word. We pray in the name of our Saviour. Now the Lord is dealing with you. Make our time and love peace edifying. Prayer for the evening gatherings. Give us a heavenly plan for the remaining day preparation. You enable us to take our share in accommodation and other needs required. There will be no lack in thy house. All things in abundance be supplied. Or we have any share be brought forward. Do your applying for leave may have leave granted. Do your physical need about the airway fare or other things be supplied. We pray in the name of our Saviour. Now on to him able to keep us from falling. And present us for the presence of the glory. Give joy to the only. Give power both now and evermore. Amen.
