Sermon Transcription
I want to share from Hebrews chapter 10. Hebrews chapter 10 verses 8 through 12. Hebrews chapter 10 verse 8 through 12. After saying above sacrifices and offerings and whole point offerings and sacrifices for sin you have not desired. You're not looking for activity nor have you taken pleasure in them which are offered according to the law. Then he said behold I have come to do your will. Whatever God you want me to do I want to do it. That's it. He takes away the first in order to establish the second. We've heard throughout today God's not interested in activity. He's interested in the surrendered will. By this will, by this lifestyle that Jesus had we have been sanctified. We have been consecrated. We have been set apart through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices which can never take away sins. But he, Jesus, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time sat down at the right hand of God. I want to underline in verse 11 time after time. Priests offer time after time repeated sacrifices which can never take away sin. But he having offered one sacrifice for all time. What does another word for all time mean? It means for eternity. Forever. Jesus Christ offered one sacrifice for eternity. Now listen to me carefully. This is not something I think we generally hear about Jesus. Jesus was all God and all man when he was on the earth. He didn't stop being God. We've underlined the humanity of God when he said, when we say that Jesus was tempted in all points and never sinned. But he was also all God which means he was eternal which means that he had no beginning and no end. How is it possible that Jesus, one person, verse 12, could offer one sacrifice and it could last forever? That's what it's saying in verse 12. That he offered one sacrifice for sins and lasted for all time. How could that happen? Because he was for all time. He was eternal. So when the Eternal One offered a sacrifice, he didn't have to offer multiple sacrifices. The Eternal One just had to sacrifice it once. One time it was for all eternity. It's not a mystery we have to understand and explain logically. It is a mystery that is stated so we have to accept that the Eternal One offered one sacrifice for all time. He was the Eternal One. What does that mean? And what was the sacrifice that Jesus offered for us, for sin? In verse 12 it says, he offered one sacrifice for sin. All of our sins, not his sins, for all of our sins. Two thousand years ago he offered it for my sin and for your sin. He offered it for your children's sins that have not even been born as yet. He offered those sins for it one time. How did it cover two thousand years and all that? Because he was eternal. It covers the sins of David too and Abraham and Daniel. This covers it for all time because the Eternal One died. So he who was the Eternal One, one time sacrifice, lasts for all eternity. Now what is the penalty that God had to pay, that Jesus had to pay for sin? It was separation from God. That's the sacrifice Jesus had to pay. Separation from God. That's the punishment we'll pay if we don't accept the blood of Jesus to forgive us of our sins. It'll be separation from God. That's the punishment. It's not disease, it's not lack of money, it's not losing your job, it is separation from God. And that's what hell is. Hell is separation from God. We may be temporarily separated from God but God is still giving us a lot of blessings on this earth. He allows the sun, he allows oxygen to breathe, many things like that. But in hell we'll be separated from God in a way that we don't experience, even the heathen don't experience here or not. Jesus experienced separation from God. But here's what he experienced as an eternal sacrifice. He experienced eternal separation from God. How long was Jesus physically dead for? Three days. How long did Jesus experience separation from God? Eternal. This is a mystery again that we don't have to understand and acknowledge, understand and be able to explain but we must accept it because of who God is, being the eternal one, when he died he experienced eternal separation from God. The Lord gave me a very sobering thought recently. It was just a little bit of a flash of a thought. He gave me the thought of being all alone. He made me feel just for a little bit what if all my wife and all my family died and all of you were gone and my mom and my dad were gone and nobody knew me. Nobody. For a second I felt the emptiness of being all alone. Some of us may feel we're all alone. You're not. Jesus says I'm with you. Jesus said in John chapter 16 you'll all desert me but I'm not alone. My father's with you. But Jesus was different. God deserted him. God forsook him while on the cross. He felt what it felt like to be all alone. For how long? For eternity. This is what Jesus experienced on the cross. Being alone is a horrible feeling. None of us are all alone. When we lose loved ones we feel more alone. It's nothing compared to really being all alone and nobody has ever felt that except Jesus. Everybody else had God at least. Jesus was the only one. This is the penalty that he paid. He paid the price of being all alone for all eternity. This is what hell is. It's the most despairing feeling I can say. There's just one little flash that I felt just in an imagination of being all alone. It so sobered me to be all alone and it gave me a little bit of a wonderful idea of what it felt like for Jesus when he was all alone. So that was my first point that I wanted to make sure I underlined. Jesus was eternally alone. That's the price he paid for our sins. So turn with me now to Isaiah chapter 53. Isaiah chapter 53 verse 10. But the Lord was pleased to crush him. Putting him, Jesus, to grief. To be all alone for all eternity. This eternal being being all alone. He pleased the Lord to crush him. Putting him to grief. If he would render himself as an offering he will see his offspring. He will prolong his days and the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in his hand. Verse 11. As a result of the anguish of his soul he will see it and be satisfied. By his knowledge, the righteous one, my servant. As we heard about being a servant. My servant will justify the many as he will bear their iniquities. I want you to just pause and think about verse 11. The first line in there. As a result of the anguish of his soul. Whose soul? God's soul. How long does God's soul last for? Eternity. Can I put that word eternal right before soul? As a result of the anguish of God's eternal soul? How long does the anguish of God last for? Because of my sin. Eternity. Can you grab a hold of that? We we think about the love of God. Eternal. We think of the mercy of God. Eternal. We think of the loving-kindness of God. Eternal. What about the anguish of God? Is it two days and now we're good? God gave me a picture that this is God's heart is eternally as an anguish. I don't know how to explain it. But I think even in heaven God's anguish will continue. That doesn't make him sad. But I see that next line. He will see it and be satisfied though. Because by his knowledge, you see in verse 11, because he'll he'll feel the pain. The father will feel the pain of what it was to lose his only begotten son for all eternity. He'll still feel that pain. He'll remember that. We never forget losing our children. We never forget losing our parents. God's gonna forever feel the anguish of what it felt like to lose a son. But then he'll look at us who were justified, the many, and resolve that. It'll be satisfied. The anguish of God will be satisfied. Not removed. The anguish of God is eternal. But the anguish of God is satisfied for all eternity. He gave me a picture of the anguish of God for all eternity. Doesn't stop. That's what it means to be an eternal sacrifice. That is what is the price that the father and the son had to pay. Eternal anguish for my sins, for your sins. Isaiah 53 verse 1. Who has believed our message? To whom is the arm of the Lord been revealed? Dear brothers and sisters, you're gonna believe this message. Are you gonna grab a hold of the eternal anguish of God over you? It's not gonna stop when you go to heaven. It's not gonna stop when you have a heaven and a new earth. The eternal anguish of his soul will be there. It's for eternity. But this is the price that God was willing to take for our sins. This is what it means when he said he gave his only begotten son so that I could be satisfied, so that he could be satisfied. He's gonna feel that pain in heaven. He's gonna look at his son. He's gonna see the nail prints. There's gonna be anguish. But then he'll see the many that were redeemed and justified, who lived the rest of their lives in response to that, who also got to partake in the fellowship of the anguish of God. Lord, I want to know you and to be found in you, not having a righteousness of my own, but to be found in you and to be conformed to the image of your death, to know the power of your resurrection of which I can live this life, but also the fellowship of your anguish, the anguish that you felt as you were separated, that it would give me a soberness for sin, that it'll give me a great respect for you, Lord Jesus, as I live my life, and I will seek to be like you, who was a servant. We never promised the easy life, but Lord Jesus, you didn't live an easy life yourself. I want to embrace this life. I too, Lord Jesus, want to feel not only your joy, which is eternal, but I also want to partake in a little bit of that eternal anguish that you had. May God help us.
