Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

Sermon Summary
In this sermon, the preacher begins by discussing the curse placed on humanity and how it led to slavery. He then mentions the betrayal of Judas Iscariot and how he ended up in hell for eternity. The preacher emphasizes that sinners who know the judgment of God are deserving of death, questioning why capital punishment has been abolished. The sermon transitions to a new series called "The Pilgrim's Problems," with the first topic being homosexuality. The preacher states that his role is to provide the Bible's perspective on this issue and promises to explore relevant passages, starting with Romans chapter one.
Sermon Transcription
And we start a new series tonight. And I've called it The Pilgrim's Problems. Sort of questions that I've been asked down through the years tell me about homosexuality. Now I have to give the Bible answer to this. You see, I know that the world has an answer about homosexuality. I know the world's answer. And I know the humanists have another answer. I know about their argument, you know. And I know the liberals, they've got another answer altogether. But my job these nights for you is to give the Bible answer. I'm supposed to be a Bible teacher and I ought to know every spot in this book where this subject or truth is even hinted at. These are truths, you know, under, in the book. And my job, when we come to booze or any other one we take up in this series is just to give the Bible answer. So we'll be looking up the Bible the whole way through this. And we're at Romans chapter 1 to begin with. Letter to the Romans, and we're at chapter 1. Now, Dr. Barnhouse said on many occasions that the last nine verses of Romans chapter 1 are the most terrible verses in the Bible. And I'm in perfect agreement with him. I think the last nine verses are the most terrible verses in the Bible. He went on to say that they're so terrible that he was almost afraid to read them. That bit he and I differ on. Because I think they were inspired by the Holy Ghost. And the Holy Ghost inspired Paul to write them in a letter to the young saints at Rome. And the letter had to be read out in the assembly. They didn't send them all the New Testament, you know. It wasn't printed then, just the letter to the Romans. And only one copy of it too. And the letter had to be read to the assembly. And that's what God wants us to do. Some of the timid ones might tremble, but it doesn't matter. This happens to be God's word, I believe it's God's word. Now, the last nine verses would make us start reading at verse 24. But we're going a verse or two backwards still. We're going to verse 20 to get the proper lead-in to this thing. Verse 19, you see, he's talking about God. And then in verse 20 he said, For the invisible things of him. And he's talking about the invisible things of God. From the creation of the world are clearly seen. That is, from the very first day of creation. The invisible things of God were clearly seen. Being understood by the things that are made. You see, if we left it that the invisible things are clearly seen, it would be almost Irish. Invisible things clearly seen. But the invisible things of God, right from the very first day of creation, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made. You know, we know a lot about the heavens tonight. And the planets. And how they move in their orbits. And how the earth moves around the sun in its orbit. And how all the planets move in their orbits. And we're finding out that in 1982 all the nine planets are going to get into line. And what a draw they will make on the earth. And what things may well take place. But we'll leave that to another night. You see, as we look into the heavens, and just because of how the men who went to the moon have opened up the subject for us, we know far more about the planets now than we ever did before. And we know a great lot about our mighty gigantic solar system. But we must never forget that there are thousands of solar systems up there like ours. Thousands of them. Now, when you get to understand this even in a little way, then you know there's a God. Yes, the invisible things of God are clearly seen, being understood by the things which are made, even his eternal power and Godhead. Because everybody down here ought to know there's a God. And ought to know something about his eternal power and Godhead. Oh, I know they would argue with you. But in the depths of their being they know. Yes, they do. It's like me taking off a watch and saying, look, do you see that? Nobody made it. You know what they'll do with me? They'll take me to Armagh. That's what they'll do. But when I point to the big gigantic wonderful thing that's moving better than this watch, and in more precise order, some of these boys would try to argue. There is more precision in the heavens than there is in this. Much more. So you see the invisible things of God, even his eternal power and Godhead, are clearly seen. And so Paul comes to this conclusion, so that they are without excuse. No excuse. Now he goes on from that, because that when they knew God, he's talking about men down on this planet, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God. Neither were thankful. But became vain in their imaginations. And their foolish heart was darkened. You see, when man stood on this planet, you know, sometimes people come to me and say, what about the heathen, you know? These poor heathen in the jungle. Let me tell you that man didn't start in the jungle. Man started in a garden with God. Talked to God, walked with God, knew all about what God wanted to. But when they knew God, this light man, didn't want to just keep him there as God. They thought they could do this thing without him. This is exactly where the devil got to. He thought he could take the whole thing over, I will be as God. Oh, but man did the same thing. He thought he could do without God. In fact, we've got a lot of smart alecks, yet who think they can do without God? I meet them all the time. And you'll meet them in the universities more than anywhere else. Right? Yes, what's this now? Their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise. It became fulginal. Oh, they thought they could leave him out altogether. We can run this thing without you. We can do better without you. So, although they knew he was there, and his Godhead, and his eternal power. Verse 23 says, They changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image. Made like the corruptible man. That was the first step. Made an image of themselves. Oh, they'll put this image up here. They'll worship this. Let him go there. Oh, they're going to worship this image. Let me tell you, there's still worshipping images around here. And not very far from here either. And that's mine, you know. Oh, plaster casts of this and that and the other, you know. Oh, and there are doctors on solicitors, and all the other big fellas all bowed down to it. Yes. That's not the subject tonight. But I want you to see they went further than that. Changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man. And then to birds. Oh, they made images of birds too. And then to four-footed beasts. You wouldn't believe it, would you? And then to creeping things. Yes, they had images of the crocodile. And they used to come and bow down on the sand. Oh, this was their God. Seems strange to us because we know a little bit better about it. But that's man. And man just left God and did this. God watched him, you know. And all the time God preaded with him. And all the time God talked to him. And all the time God sent his messengers to him. And then he got so far away that God let him go. Verse 24, and that's where we start the nine verses. Wherefore God also gave them up. Oh, God just opened his hands and said, All right, go on, go to hell if you want to go to hell. And you wouldn't think he would, would you? Ah, but he would. See, you sinners in here, let me talk to you. See, Judas Iscariot sitting at the table, don't you? And he's fed up with Christ. He's going to sell him for 30 pieces of silver. Oh, you wouldn't believe this, sure you wouldn't. And at last he gets up and takes a look at him. And turns his back on him and goes through the curtain and down the steps. And he's on his way to hell. And he's in hell now. Well, he'll be in hell and the lake of fire for all eternity. And when he went through the curtain, the Lord Jesus never moved. He let him go to hell. Some of you think you can pray with God and sin. I'll tell you what he'll do with you. He'll let you go. Oh, I know if he wasn't holding a half of this world, I know where they would go to. Even the folk that are not saved or held by God from a certain amount of things. But this crowd that was going to persevere and make crocodiles their God. This is what it says here. God also gave them up. I want you to get the word here. To uncleanness. That's the first word I want you to underline. Because when God gives man up, that's just the first thing that takes place. He doesn't become a nice fellow or anything. Uncleanness. Now I want you to get the whole phrase, but we've got to take it bit by bit. God gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts. For you teachers and you preachers, can I say this to you? That the lusts of their own hearts is quite different from the lusts of the flesh. Please let me say that to you. Because you know, the lusts of the flesh. Let me just go to 1 John chapter 2. Keep your finger where we are, we'll come back here. 1 John and we're at chapter 2. Verse 16. For all that is in the world, the lusts of the flesh, and the lusts of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the fathers of course, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lusts thereof. Ah, the lusts of the flesh passeth away, you know. Ah, but the lusts of the heart will not pass away. That's quite a different thing. Dr. Ironside illustrated this to us once. Said to me one morning, I was always the softy in this class. He said to me, stand up. And he knew you were for it. And I stood up, he said, tell me the difference between the lusts of the heart and the lusts of the flesh. You know what you would answer now, don't you? He had any sense you would answer the way I did. I said, sir, I don't know. I didn't know. He says, well, they're vastly different. He said, I saw a cartoon once. Of an old pickpocket dying. At 99 years of age. And his cheeks were hollow. And he was just about to give his last breath. And the minister was kneeling over him. Saying the last prayer. And yet the old balmy hand went into the minister's pocket to lift the watch. Now, he couldn't have done very much with it. Because he couldn't have taken it round to someone who would have bought it. It wasn't the lust of the flesh that was there, you know. It was the lust of the heart that was there. And Dr. Ironthread said, I've seen old men at nearly 100 years of age looking at a young woman. And there's no fire in their bones anyway for her. But the lust of the heart is there. The lust of the flesh is dead. You got that now? Because I shall tell you that the lust of the heart will go on down into hell. And it will lust and lust and lust for all eternity. But there will be no satisfaction for it. Now, let's get what God did to these people. He gave them up. I'm not rushing this no matter what happens. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts. And that's different from the lust of the flesh. To dishonor their own bodies between themselves. Did you get that word? See these homosexualists? There may be some creep in here tonight. But I shall tell you that what you are like is dishonoring your own bodies between yourselves. That's what it says in this book anyway. Dishonoring their own bodies between themselves. God gave them up to that. It's uncleanness is the word that's there. It's the lusts of their heart now. And it's dishonoring their own bodies between themselves. Who changed the truth. These folk who changed the truth of God into a lie. At least they thought they did. And worshipped and served the creature more than the creator. Who is blessed forever. Now, it goes again. It has another go at it. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections. There's an adjective for you. Vile affections. Imprinted, you know. Happens to be there. You know they try to tell me there's some sort of love in this thing. Am I the man, the mannequin? That's not marriage. We'll come to marriage here one of these nights. And whom God has joined together. Don't you try to tell me that God has joined them two fools together like that. That's not my, they may put the name on it. But it won't work. I'll tell you the word. Vile affection. You're running about cuddling some wee fella in the dark. I'll tell you what you're at. It's unclean. It's dishonoring your bodies. It's vile affection. If I'm not allowed to read this out of the book, my arm may go to somewhere else. Don't you think that I'm afraid of this book. This book will always defend me. And I will defend it. So long as I can handle this sword. I don't bother about you. Because I can cut your ears off and your head along with them at the same time. Now watch this because this gets deeper. Verse 26 for this cause. God gave them up unto vile affections. Now ladies take note of this. For even their woman did change in her natural use into that which is against nature. You know it's true that we're just looking at homosexuals tonight. But remember ladies play at this game too called Elizabethans. I suppose that some of you dear old ladies, bless you. You don't know that women get together to cuddle each other. And if you don't, well bless you for your ignorance. But they do you know. And it's just as vile that way as the other way. And it's because they've got away from God. Look at verse 27. And likewise also the men. Leaving the natural use of a woman. Watch this phrase now. Born in their lust. Oh that so might be free. It's the Holy Ghost that's talking. Yes we're looking at the Spirit's description. Uncleanness. Dishonoring their own bodies. Vile affection. Burned in their own lust. You got that? Man with man working that which is unseemly. That's what the Bible says. They're talking Bible truth now. Oh I know that there are boys who stand on the humanist side. Oh there are so many on the liberal side. The world side. Some of them are politicians. Oh yes they'd like to back it up you know. And we must be tolerant and don't say anything. You don't want me to hide this book do you? I think that's what we come here for. To hear God's word. And every word of it is true. It should be preached too. Here are the descriptions. Uncleanness. Dishonoring their own bodies. Vile affection. Burned in their lust. Man with man working that which is unseemly. And receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meek. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge. Here's the same phrase again. God gave them over to a reprobate mind. Mind you that's a serious matter. You know when God just says alright you've gone too far this time. Just gives you over. Vile affection. Reprobate mind to do those things which are not convenient. And if you're in that state tonight where God has given you over because you have played at this thing for so many years and you've never listened. Let me tell you where you sit on the seat you're damned. That's serious for me and it's serious for you. And if you're just a wee fellow or just a youngster getting involved in this and you're beginning to be convicted. May the good Lord bring you to the sanctuary and save you. Because that's your only chance of getting out of that. Because you can make up your mind as many times as you like and be as honest as you want to be and determined. And close your eyes and say oh God I'm sorry I'll never go back there again. Let me tell you you'll be back. The only person who can save you from that terrible thing is the Lord Jesus. That's why he's such a wonderful saviour. It's the same with booze. You can cut your arm open and sign a pledge with your own blood and you'll be drunk the next hour. Talking about sin now. I think we can see this. I don't want to go into the depths of this reprimand mind. Because it's talking about all the things that are there. But you'll find if you look at them being filled with all unrighteousness and fornication and wickedness. And the word murder is in there. And you'll find that there are inventors of evil things. Now when you take these things. See the last verse. Verse 32. It's the verse that would shake anybody. Talks about these men. These men who have been given over mind you. Who knowing the judgment of God. Some are men no matter how far they get away from God they sort of know the judgment of God. That they which commit such things are worthy of death. I don't know why we did away with capital punishment. I just don't know. I shall tell you that the judgment of God makes murder and wickedness and the inventors of evil things. It makes them worthy of death. And every man under this sun. He has a knowledge that this God doesn't like this sin. And that this punishment fits it. Worthy of death. I'll make no mistakes about this. We will maybe come to capital punishment one night on this platform. But you know not only do they know that God sees it. And that God would judge it. And that the judgment would be death. They not only do know that. Not only do the same they do it. Even with all the knowledge. And they are determined to do it. Ah but they not only do the same but have pleasure. They stand on the text line and cheer on the boys that do it. And the world we are in. That's the world we are in. That's a horrible verse. That's the most damning verse in the book. If you know your sin. And you know what God thinks of it. And you know that it's worthy of eternal death and you do it. And you not only do it. But you have pleasure in them that do it. I'll tell you you're a good bit away from God. You got the hold of this now. I think we have got through the Spirit's description. Let me do this quickly for you. I thought I should put this in for fairness. You know the world's comments. Time magazine is a great magazine if you're looking for news and up to date news. And let me tell you I read it because of world affairs. And I need to know something about what's going on to fit into prophecy. And I don't do it very much but I do scan through it. And some homosexualist sent into Time magazine a whole letter. And it's published on the letter page. That the world and the church and everybody should be tolerant to these homosexuals. And he was making a whole plea for this tolerance. And did it very well. And if you know Time magazine they printed the whole letter as it was. And then they put their own little comment in blacker letters at the bottom. And this is what they said. The editors of Time magazine said. Frankly it gives us the creeps. I'll tell you what they give everybody if there's any decency in them the creeps. An old rotten old carnal man taking you wee fellows and having sex with them. Ought to give you the creeps. And when the schoolmaster goes to the government to ask permission to teach them how it's done. My God we would need to tear the school down. Yes. Leading psychiatrist in New York said. The schoolmaster found one of the boys at school. With a lot of the boys in another classroom. Teaching them homosexuality and practicing on them. So he took him, took him to a leading psychiatrist in New York. And this supposed to be mighty mind man. He stood back and he said. Oh don't get excited it's just a normal manifestation. That would be a nice fellow to go to. That's if you had a hammer in your hand. No. And the bump I would give him he wouldn't think for a day or two I assure you. An old bible teacher told me this. We went through this chapter together. When I was in the Faroe Isles. And Andrew Sloane was an old godly man with a white beard down to here. And he said to me well he'd do all these phrases for me. And you know he knew more about them than I did to be honest about it. But he just wanted me to say the things. And then he said this and I never forgot this. Said do you see all these people mixed up in this? There's a great percentage of them. For whom nothing can be done. They're sunk. You've played too long and you've gone too far. And God has opened his hand. And he has given you up. And you're on your way to hell tonight. For your sin. God's serious. Youngs come around the meeting. If you're mixed up in it get right with God. You don't need to come to talk to me I don't even want to know your name. Go home and get right with God and give your life to Christ. Get this thing put right. Yes. Now let's see some of these scenes. Let's go to Genesis chapter 9. Book of Genesis. And we're at the 9th chapter. I can see on the notes that the printer has put a Genesis chapter 10. It's his mistake I'm sure. I would think I put a Genesis chapter 9 but you can fix it on your notes it's Genesis 9. Verse 18. Noah has just brought the ark to Mount Ararat and the flood has subsided. And we're on dry land. Verse 18. And the sons of Noah that went forth of the ark were Shem and Ham and Japheth. And Ham is the father of Canaan. And some of the scholars ask the question why does it say Ham is the father of Canaan? Why does it not give the sons of the other two? It doesn't tell you who Shem's offspring is or who Japheth's offspring is. It just says Ham is the father of Canaan and they thought this was wrong. But it's far from being wrong. These are the three sons of Noah. And of them was the whole earth overspread. And all of us here tonight we descended from one of these boys. These three boys walked out of the ark one day Shem and Ham and Japheth. And we are descended from some one of them. And I would think that almost everybody in here this evening came from Japheth. I may be wrong, there may be one from Shem. If there is a Jew here, he comes from Shem. And if there is a colored man in the meeting, he comes from Ham. And sometimes the great questions asked about these three fellows were the sons of Noah and their skin must have been the same color. And of course they speak the same language. And the three of them walked out of the same ark, out through the same door. Now if we were to trace them tonight you would find that Japheth went right north. You are looking at the sons of Japheth. Look at chapter 10 verse 2. The sons of Japheth are Gomer and Magog and Madiah and Javan and Tubal and Meshach. See the word Gomer, it's the word that Germany comes from. We had a German on the platform one night and I said to him, remember I turned around and said, Do you know what Gomer means? And he knew, better than me of course, the old word for Germany. See Meshach there, it's the word for Moscow. So that this fellow Japheth, he went right north. And they tell me, you see, if you went north, and you stayed north, and your children stayed north for a thousand or maybe more years, you know you would become very pale skinned. In fact all the northerners, nearly all have blonde hair. You can tell the Germans, the real Germans are blonde. You can tell the Finns, find the real Finns are blonde. I preached in Finland and Sweden, and they're all blonde. You'll find that Han, he didn't go north, he went south. He went right down to the equator. And they tell me, if you went to the equator and lived for a thousand years, or your children did, you'd become coloured. I know that some of the folks in this meeting go to the equator for the holidays now, and they come back like niggers. Yes, I've got to say something but I'll not. It's all right. And you'll find that Sam went right out, right out east. And you'll find in the east they turn yellow. Now there's a whole lot of things mixed up in this, and we're not going into that now. But these are the three sons. Now we're back in chapter 9. And Noah came out of the ark too, verse 20. And Noah began to be a husband man, and he planted a vineyard. And he drank of the wine and was drunken. Now this is a terrible thing because Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord just before the flood, you know. God brought him into the ark and his family too. And Noah being moved with fear prepared an ark to the saving of a thousand, all that sort of thing. Here he is, he's drunk. Of course we're going to take this up next week and I'll have something to say about this old man getting drunk. Because I'm not after the drunken bit tonight. Because I shall always have to say this, you know. He planted the vineyard, and out of the fruits of his own labors, you know, he got intoxicated. Oh, but there are boys who get intoxicated with their own labors and it's not booze at all. You see, preachers can be so masterly that they could become intoxicated with the works of their own labors. You strut about in pride and they're intoxicated before God. See, singers. Lot of singers here. You can get intoxicated because you can do it so well, you know. And you become a shoemaker. There's a whole lot of ways of being drunk before God, you know. But we're talking about strong drink next week. And of course this is what he actually did, he got intoxicated by the labors of his own hands. Now this is the bit that's been battered around for a long time, verse 21. He drank of the wine and was drunken and he was uncovered within his tent. One of the butchers down at Graftons the other day, I don't know if he's here, he may be. He said, you know, what do you think about this? He said, what do you think? Because that's the way you talk when you want to put the other fella in the fixer. He puts the ball over your neck, you put it back again. Tell me what you think now. He says, I'm not sure you know that you're right in what you're thinking. I said, tell me what you think, never mind about me. You know, I'll tell you, mind the minute. He says, when do you think he's uncovered in his tent? You think the clothes fell off, how would the clothes fall off here in the tent? Not in the bed, you know, he's in the tent. Don't fall off as easy in the tent. Oh, I shall prove he didn't fall off, he was uncovered is the word. I've not fallen off, somebody took the clothes off him. Yes, and they took the clothes off him for a very terrible thing too. Yes, he was uncovered within his tent when he was drunk. And how much the boy were after, the father of Cainan, there it is again, saw the nakedness of his father. And told his two brethren without shame, and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both his shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of the father. And their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, now watch this very carefully, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. And he said, cursed be Cainan. He's cursing Ham's son. Yes, Ham was the father of Cainan, that's what we were learning. You see, if you go back to the first verse of chapter 9, it says, And God blessed Noah and his sons. And these three boys were blessed. And Noah knew they were blessed. So he can't curse what God has blessed. Oh, but he can curse his son. Now, that's not just getting angry, you know, and saying things to him. That's different. That's not cursing in that sense at all. You see, in these days, the father of the family was the high priest of the family. And he had the power to put a curse on you. Now, he wouldn't exercise that power if the clothes just were removed for fun or for anything else. There was something terrible done. He knew what his son had done. His son had committed a sexual sin with him. So he cursed his son. Cursed be Cainan. You'll find that on that wreath, right down through the years, there's been a curse on that cold wreath. Oh, I know that grace has removed it. I know that where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. Oh, but it was there for years and years and years. And they were slaves to everybody. Oh, let me read it on, and you'll get it. And he said, Cursed be Cainan. See, the words are servant of servants in the old book here before me. A slave of slaves shall he be unto his brethren. They were cursed to become the slaves of all and sundry, and shall have thee. Oh, I think that we were looking at the film Roots not so long ago. There's nobody leaning over to say hallelujah about it. You know, the way they hammered the blacks and made them slaves. Oh, but that's where it came from. They were cursed. And they were cursed to be slaves, and slaves, and slaves. Now, I'm not going to be able to finish this whole thing. So I'm going to stop where we are. We'll bring the notes back. And we'll go on. And I'll tell you what we'll have. We'll have the other notes here, and we might start into them if we get finished quickly. So we'll have booze and sex and... You'll tell them that we're having booze and sex at the bar. Let's bow together before the Lord. Lord, we bow and thank thee for thy book. What a wonderful word this is. Oh, Lord, the phrases and the things that thou hast placed in this book, we just praise thy name. We pray, Lord, that thou will speak to any sinner in this place tonight who may be tainted with this thing. And they can see now where they're heading for. They're heading for hell. Oh, God, we pray that thou would bring them to the cross of Calvary where Christ died for the ungodly. Some of us can stand here tonight and say he was wounded for our transgressions. And he was bruised for our iniquities. And the chastisement of our peace was laid upon him and with his stripes or sufferings. We have been healed. Thank thee for the cross. Oh, Lord, part us in thy fear and with thy blessing for thy name's sake. Amen. And you hold on to those notes now.
