Valsan Thampu

Revd. Dr. Valson Thampu (birth year unknown–present). Born in India, Valson Thampu is a Christian theologian, educator, and former ordained minister of the Church of North India, known for his controversial tenure as principal of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, from 2008 to 2016. Raised in a Christian family, he pursued a Ph.D. in theology from Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, though its UGC recognition was questioned in 2008. He served as a lecturer and officiating principal at St. Stephen’s before becoming principal, during which he preached at college chapel services, emphasizing spiritual renewal and social justice, often drawing criticism for his progressive views. Thampu authored On a Stormy Course (2017), reflecting on his embattled leadership, and translated Malayalam works like The Scent of the Other Side (Crossword award winner) and Gift in Green (2011). A regular columnist for The Indian Express and Indian Currents, he critiques church institutionalism and advocates universal brotherhood, influenced by Jesus’ servant model. In 2016, he renounced his priesthood, citing the spiritual decline of Indian churches, and has since focused on writing and speaking, including a 2021 talk at CMS College, Kottayam. Married with a family, though details are private, he remains a polarizing figure for his outspokenness. Thampu said, “Christianity is not what is preached in air-conditioned rooms but what is lived on the streets.”
