The work of the Holy Spirit involves making God's truth deeply and permanently known within believers, guiding and transforming their hearts beyond fleeting impressions. Christian preaching often depicts the Spirit as an active, divine presence that impresses and seals spiritual realities in the soul, fulfilling Jesus' promise of the Helper (John 14:26). These illustrations use imagery of engraving, sealing, or enduring impressions (John 14:26).

Impressions, Transient

God's Holy Spirit fixes fleeting truths permanently on the human heart.

When Daguerre was working at his sun-pictures, his great difficulty was to fix them. The light came and imprinted the image; but, when the tablet was drawn from the camera, the image had vanished. Our lamentation is like his, our want the same,—a fixing solution that shall arrest and detain the fugitive impressions. He discovered the chemical power which turned the evanescent into the durable. There is a divine agency at hand that can fix the truth upon the heart of man,—God's Holy Spirit. Rev. J. Stoughton.

Workings Of The Spirit

The Spirit's work in hearts is mysterious but real, like unseen affection between souls.

The doctrine of the workings of the Spirit upon the hearts of men is beyond human explanation. God alone knows how mind touches mind. I do not know how a mother pours her heart’s affection on the child’s heart, but she does. I do not know how soul touches soul, how thought touches thought, how mind touches mind, or how affection responds to affection, hut I know it does.
