God's Word represents the living and active message from Scripture that nourishes and sustains believers personally and spiritually. It is often depicted as food or a special portion, emphasizing the necessity of internalizing and applying God's truth in daily life (Hebrews 4:12; Matthew 4:4).

The unstoppable spread of the Bible illustrates God's sovereign word accomplishing His will.

They cannot stop the progress of Bible societies. Sooner may they arrest the sun at the antipodes, and prevent his rising to illuminate our horizon; sooner may they confine the winds in the cave of Æolus, never again to cool and refresh our atmosphere; sooner may they stem the mighty stream that leaves the mountain's sides, and interdict its progress to the ocean. Deistical Historians

Infidels' efforts to destroy Christianity ironically funded gospel spread through their estates and presses.

Gibbon, who, in his celebrated "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," has left a memorial of his enmity to the gospel, resided many years in Switzerland, where, with the profits of his works, he purchased a considerable estate. This property has descended to a gentleman, who, out of his rents, expends a large sum annually in the promulgation of that very gospel which his predecessor insidiously endeavored to undermine.

Voltaire boasted that with one hand he would overthrow that edifice of Christianity which required the hands of twelve apostles to build up. The press which he employed at Ferney, for printing his blasphemies, was afterwards actually employed at Geneva in printing the Holy Scriptures: thus the very engine which he set to work to destroy the credit of the Bible, was employed in disseminating its truths.

It is a remarkable circumstance also, that the first meeting of an Auxiliary Bible Society at Edinburgh, was held in the very room in which David Hume, the infidel, died.

Infidel Prophecies

Infidels wrongly predicted the Bible's demise, but God's word continues to flourish.

Voltaire said "he was living in the twilight of Christianity;" so he was; but it was the twilight of the morning.

Tom Paine, on his return from France, sitting in the City Hotel in Broadway, surrounded by many of our leading men, who came to do him homage, predicted that "in five years there would not be a Bible in America." What would his spirit feel could it now enter the depositories of the American Bible Society?
